@Gilles is there any need of the "group" tag? user-management or -administration should be better no?

@Braiam no, user ≠ group

@Gilles I know, my point was that all that falls under the UNIX user and groups model

@Braiam many questions are specifically about users or about groups
maybe we could have a tag , because they have a lot in common, but + is ok for that

Is it ok to provide 2 answers for the same question?
I found sed as well as awk solution.

Q: sed load substitute from file

SamI'm attempting to replace a pattern in a file with the complete contents of another file using sed. Currently I am using: sed "s/PATTERN/`cat replacement.txt`/g" "openfile.txt" > "output.txt" However, if the replacement file contains any characters such as ', ", or / I start getting errors du...

@FaheemMitha: Yes, there are many. But they stay think "close", don't like to share their mind, and too lazy to get in community like U&L.

5:16 AM
@Ramesh: Are you there?

slm
5:39 AM
@Ramesh of course

@Gnouc are there a lot of 'nix fans in Vietnam?
Guys, use the reply thingy.

In KDE from time to time I do something to make the screen turn into a bunch of tiny icons. can anyone tell me the command for that?
?

@FaheemMitha: I mean they still think like "close source" environment
they don't want to share their knowledge with community

8:02 AM
@Gnouc ok
But even Windows users share information.

@FaheemMitha: Yes, they share "what", but never share "why" :)

@Gnouc Oh. I see. Meaning the Windows users?

@FaheemMith: Yes, and that happen even if with *nix users. I think it's also a reason make me in U&L frequently :))

@Gnouc Sorry. I went to sleep. I saw your comment and realized that if I have "QWERTY PATTERN" the solution won't work. But I guess, the OP had just PATTERN.

What do people use to read ext4 partitions in Windows?
I tried several programs, but they were old and didn't work (at least on Windows 8.1)

No, I haven't.
Do you use it?

I've used it a few times, only to transfer some files. I don't know if it will work well for everyday use.

sounds like it should do fine, I just need to transfer a few files that I ahem forgot.
herm, it requires registration.

Guys, if you want more questions to answer, go over to ask.debian.net. Lots of unanswered questions there. Assuming you know Debian, of course.

6:25 PM
Why does this ia32-libs package missing is error thrown when we try to use Linux on embedded modules? Can somebody help me over here???

@shekharsuman Ask a question?

@FaheemMitha Or you could come over to Ask Ubuntu :)

@Seth Not exactly the same.

No,I did,but my question received a lot-of-downvotes and also was automatically removed! So pathetic,I don't want to receive the same again!!!

Wonder why ask.debian.net is not more popular. Maybe they need to put in a chat room.

6:27 PM
because it's on a terrible platform.

I also added complete details but surprisingly they removed it!

I just followed a "chat" link at the bottom and it 404'd me.
@shekharsuman Well, ask a good question then ;)
3
I've never gotten any downvotes on my questions.

@Seth Huh. Maybe

I tried man seriously @Seth--but to no luck .I did provide complete details alongwith my error and it was not too broad either and was accomodated in half-a-page!

@Seth Me too. Probably it is not functional.

6:30 PM
Also, I added previous links of unix.stackexchange.com with the same erroe but to no luck!
Also a question to you @Seth---Don't you think that Ubuntu is one of a crap Linux distribution built ever with no root account login and also another configuration variation. I feel pathetic for Ubuntu users. I don't know why people use Ubuntu---Everybody just boasts that Ubuntu is more secure and hence,I use Ubuntu,. Seriously but I feel sorry for them. Would you like to comment over this!

@shekharsuman Um, I don't think you are going to endear yourself to an AU moderater with that message. Just FYI.
If you want to annoy him, you are certainly going the right way about it, OTOH.
Also, your use of the word "pathetic" is wrong. Look it up.
So, does anyone know the right way to enable sound for a GNOME app when not using gnome? This is wrt to Smuxi. It has this notification bell thingy.

@FaheemMitha-I have no intention to make the moderator angry! Also, SORRY for pathetic,I was going to add sorry,but,don't know what was I thinking while typing!

I could ask this as a question, but it seems pretty trivial. Thoughts?

@shekharsuman if you want a root login, get a root shell with sudo and set a password for the root account. The root account is there on Ubuntu, you just cant login to it or use su because it has no password set.

@DavidFreitag hey

6:38 PM
@FaheemMitha Herro

Still lurking? :-)

Next,I am just a Linux beginner with 1 year of experience. How much do I know! Not at all that comment was to annoy anyone but just to know about what others feel over my thought!

@FaheemMitha Indeed :]

@FaheemMitha does it use ALSA or PA?
I'm not aware of any gnome or KDE audio mixer / library that isn't just a front end interface to either of those

@casey Does smuxi? No idea.

6:39 PM
but I don't use gnome...

@casey oh. I was just chatting with smuxi's creator on irc. I'll ask him

@FaheemMitha: So, your problem with smuxi solved?

So, what should I ask exactly?

@casey-That's most f-part of Ubuntu---having root account but with no password so that no one can login with root account directly! I am not telling that one can't do sudo, I am just telling that if someone like beginner user,who is using GUI,wants to play with system settings using GUI,he/she won't be able to do the same

@Gnouc Which one?

6:40 PM
4
A: Automatically starting smuxi-server

Gnouc I'm not sure what that means. Does that mean it executes multiple times? Isn't that a bad thing? No, this script execute only one time, at the end of each run level from 2 to 5. In the Debian RunLevel system, multiuser runlevel is defined from runlevel 2 through runlevel 5. A default Debia...

@Gnouc Oh, yeah, I just used the rc.local recipe. I had a nice chat with the aforementioned creator of smuxi, and he looked at the bug report and said he would think about an init script for debian. He also happens to be a DD and the smuxi debian package maintainer, so that is convenient.

I think the moderator is really angry over me for using those words.SORRY for mentioning the fact,but being a RedHat user, I feel Ubuntu is far behind RedHat,might be I am wrong!

@shekharsuman I don't see the issue, you can get a root shell with sudo with only a slightly different command than su. Not being able to login directly as root at the terminal, nothing bad about that, don't login as root! elevate from a user account is a better security policy.

@shekharsuman Analogy - go to a random religious Indian and insult their religion. Are they going to love you for it? No.
If you say things like that in a place where nobody knows you, people are going to think you are a troll or a lunatic. Neither of which is good.

@shekharsuman being a debian and gentoo user, I find apt and portage are light-years ahead of that relic you call RPM

6:45 PM
@Seth any idea about the sound thing?

Oh leave it Faheem! I was seriously here only to enjoy some lighter moments with you people! I was knowing that the moderator will get angry,but,just for fun! SORRY,if I bothered someone,also I agree with @casey-It's more secure that way! And,at last,@Seth-Sorry for kidding with you! Ubuntu is one of the most-popular used Linux and even I myself use it alongside CentOS(RedHat)...

@FaheemMitha sound thing?

@shekharsuman and if you want to play those pitiful word games, I feel sorry for those redhat users stuck on an ancient kernel and python 2.5 (or is it 2.6?) which isn't even supported anymore. :)

@casey-That

6:48 PM
@shekharsuman heh, I didn't even get your pings because you kept adding -- after the Seth part.

Wow, the smuxi guy seems pretty nice.

What are you using then @FaheemMitha, if it isn't GNOME?

@Seth KDE?

Oh.
Right.

motif

6:50 PM
@Seth I wasn't either, because he forgot the @. :-)

I'm surprised it doesn't work by default..

same, sounds aren't DE specific
notification API maybe, but not sound

00:16 <faheem_> Question: does smuxi use ALSA or pulseaudio? This was suggested on unix.sx chat.Not sure if it makes sense.

I agree with you @casey,but CentOS is ready with kernel build version 3.2 probably(even that too is outdated)!

00:17 <meebey> faheem_: neither of them, the bell is a gtk function

6:50 PM
sounds go to ALSA, OSS, or PA, and the DE sound applets are just GUI mixers for the underlying protocol

Where is @derobert when you need him?
@casey Um, Ok. What should I do then?

@shekharsuman no idea, I'm running 3.12.13 and even that is old now :)
@FaheemMitha find out how it is playing audio and make sure you have that channel unmuted?

ha ha ha! Also, @FaheemMitha-did you substituted me with smuxi guy???

@casey Ooh, should I use that fancy pulseaudio gui thing? That shows all the apps? Anyone remember what it was called?
@shekharsuman er, what?

pavucontrol

6:53 PM
@casey right, thanks.
As user? Or root?

@FaheemMitha -This one.

user

@casey ok
@shekharsuman Not sure what your point is.

Oh leave it! I am quitting chat now. Thanks for enjoying some lighter moments with you all--- @FaheemMitha, @casey, @Seth. Enjoy chatting!

Ok, I'm puzzled. It says Mono: 100%(0 dB)
Looks like it is unmuted. Should I try cranking it up higher?

6:56 PM
but the real users I really feel sorry for, even more than the Redhat and Ubuntu users, are the poor SCO Unixware users that I know must still be out there, weeping at the current state of affairs

@casey Isn't that their choice?
And are there really any such people, I wonder?
Moving the slider around doesn't change anything

@FaheemMitha does the app even use PA? If it is trying alsa, PA is probably blocking it

@casey Dunno. meebey just came back with this
Wonder how old he is. He seems pretty friendly. Free software developers usually get jaded and bitter quite quickly.

@FaheemMitha I'm not familiar with the underlying mechanisms of that gnome API. I assume you have the necessary gnome libs installed with the ap?

@casey No idea. I guess I could do a search for gnome sound and install random things.
wow, that's a long list

@FaheemMitha those are the dependencies gentoo has for smuxi

@casey I see.

or at least the deps I don't already have installed

let me check the recommends

bunch of mono stuff
@FaheemMitha why smuxi vs some other irc client?

@casey Disconnected client-server operation
Killer feature if you have a crap net connection/
Like I do.
Separated, not disconnected.
I can stick the server part in "the cloud" and run the client locally. And communicte over an ssh tunnel.
Quite nifty, and seems to work well, too.

7:07 PM
i see.

Unix question. I currently have
smuxi -d running from a term. If i want to redirect output to a file, can I do it without restarting it?

7:49 PM
Anyone using debtorrent?

1 hour later…
8:49 PM
@FaheemMitha At lunch :-P

Hey @derobert
That's what one traditionally says about superheroes.
Any idea about the smuxi sound thing?

@FaheemMitha Yes, but my super powers include laziness and having lunch in the face of danger. So...
That's only a subset of them, of course.

@derobert That's an impressive set of super-powers.
Go on.

ARG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111ONE
temperature: 41C

More superhero movies should include lengthy lunches and improving conversation.
@Braiam A/C?

8:59 PM
@FaheemMitha Other powers include, at least, getting +100 for asking about cows.

@Braiam nasty

@derobert I think you mean +1000

@Braiam At least you've been protected from Miley Cyrus.
@FaheemMitha Votes, not rep :-)

I cant stand anything warmer than around 21C

@derobert Ah
@casey You might not want to plan a career as a world traveller. Though you used to work as a pilot?
@derobert Miley Cyrus.

9:01 PM
@FaheemMitha It is pretty cold at 20,000 ft....

@FaheemMitha sent you its best wishes

@derobert How about when you get off the plane?

@FaheemMitha that I did. I also used to live in Texas...

@casey where?

@FaheemMitha ??? did I spell her name wrong?

9:02 PM
@Braiam Er, what?

@derobert to have Miley, one need to be in a cooler environment

@Ramesh Spent time in Austin, San Antonio, Dallas and Houston. Austin is the only place I liked.

@Braiam I donno. She's normally dressed for warm environments...

@derobert when shes actually wearing clothes

@casey cool. I live at Dallas but not been to austin.

9:03 PM
@derobert That should have ended with a question mark. I didn't recognize the reference.

@Ramesh austin >> dallas :)

@casey yeah. Most of them say Austin is a happening place.

@derobert I see. I think Ms. Cyrus wants to be the next Madonna.
Curious sense of priorities from the DC.
The way they are going they could apply to be a US state at some point.

Not likely. Then the only Cyrus-protection they'd have would be earplugs.
And logging out of Facebook.

10:01 PM
Does anyone here use GitHub regularly?

@DavidFreitag why don't you ask your next question instead, the one you want answer to

@Braiam Yeah I was just about to do that.
in The DMZ, 4 mins ago, by David Freitag
So, the pull request lifecycle (from scratch) on GitHub looks like this: Fork -> Clone -> Commit -> Push -> Pull Request?

@DavidFreitag that is the most common yes

@Patrick Ok, I thought it was. Thanks

10:43 PM
@DavidFreitag You actually want to use Mercurial instead.

@FaheemMitha Nah I'm only adding a few functions to the Arduino String library

Is that relevant? And I have no idea what the Arduino String library
is.

@FaheemMitha That's the reason why I need to know how to make a pull request :b

@DavidFreitag Oh.
The mercurial people are actually having a sprint right now.
In Munich.
@derobert So, smuxi sound notification?
BTW, smuxi actually seems pretty good. I think I'll use it.
Written in mono, unfortunately, but you can't have everything.

11:03 PM
Damn, I don't get to go to the Mercurial sprint or Debconf.
/me realises his life is empty.

11:35 PM
@Gilles should I post a feature request asking for the distro-version tags to be burninated or another discussion asking to operatively do so?

11:46 PM
@Braiam don't we have a consensus on the meta thread?

@Gilles yes, but I'm deciding if going for automated burnination (the red button) or manual cleanup (the boring one)
one could argue that most of the questions needs manual cleanup

@Braiam why manual cleanup? They can simply be merged into the corresponding [distro] tag
abuse of [distro] tags is a separate problem

anyone see this as programing question? stackoverflow.com/q/25396711/792066
@Gilles I wouldn't want to exacerbate the problem by requesting merging, but meh
can you guys do a review here? There are several things there waiting for months :(
