Q: Installing Rubymine without sun-java6-jre

BodhidarmaI'm using an ubuntu 10.04 OS and am looking to install Rubymine. It seems every walk through recommends installing sun-java6-jre before downloading rubymine but aptitude and apt-get are returning nothing, claiming that sun-java6-jre no longer exists. I'm completely unfamiliar with how to handle t...

Q: How do I make a multi-threaded app use all the cores on Ubuntu under VMWare?

JeffI have a multi-threaded C++ app (using pThreads) that processes a massive flat file that works great on Windows - uses all four cores on my puny CPU. Client wants to run the same code on Red Hat on a fire-breathing 64 Xeon CPU machine. So I compile it here (g++), ran it on Ubuntu on VMWare, and c...

Q: Debian: rsync and cp is corrupting contents of CSV files

GeorgeI have a weird problem. I wrote a script that scans a directory on a samba share (a OpenSUSE server on the LAN) and uses cp to copy certain CSV files to the local Debian server web root at /var/www. The script works absolutely fine if it encounters one file to copy, but if there are several, wei...

Q: How to fake the source-port of a TCP package?

binfalseIs there an easy way (or is it possible at all) to rewrite a TCP package as it leaves the machine? For example if I run telnet binfalse.de 22 it will search for an unused port to leave the machine. In this case it's 46576: root@srv % lsof -i -P -n | grep telnet telnet 10150 user 3u I...

Q: How can I prevent Control+Alt+D from logging me out (of Gnome 2.22 on Debian 5)?

offby1I was using Emacs, and typed Control+Alt+D in order to run Emacs' "down-list" command. Q: make qt programs look good under XFCE?

AndreI use debian 6.0 squeeze with xfce. My problem -some programs look nice and some sort of ugly. AFAIK this is because XFCE is gtk and most programs use gtk theme, but some programs use qt and thus don't use gtk themes (rocket science right there). So - my question is - how can I apply some the...

A: Local cache for apt packages

FlimzyThere are several ways. One of the easiest is to install squid. Squid is simply a web/FTP cache, but that means it will cache your Debian downloads--as well as any web sites. So it has an added bonus! One drawback of using squid (or any caching proxy server) is that your sources.list must all ...

@UnixandLinux Should we keep this here and close the SU one or close it here?

8:17 PM
@Caleb No answers on either side. You've done the work of editing here, so let's keep it here. Flag it on SU.

@Gilles Done. I also suggested the user delete the other one, but I have and idea he's not going to voluntarily comply.

It's actually already migrated, I nagged an SU mod about it. Thanks

What monster has StackOverflow created in training people that free answers come in < 5 minutes or you've asked "to no avail"?
@MichaelMrozek Spiffy.

@Caleb It's rare to get good answers to nontrivial questions in 5 minutes, even on SO

Q: How to prevent user from changing files using linux permission

Is it possible, using linux permission scheme, to allow users create files but not edit or delete them at a later time? I mean, we have a delivery folder where users put artifacts there and we do not want these artifacts to be modified after delivered i.e. edited or deleted.

Eval'ing backticks? Is there something I don't know or did this editor think they were changing the markdown formatting: unix.stackexchange.com/revisions/10751/2

@Caleb No, the editor only put the proper markdown formatting. The backticks weren't showing in the original because of markdown, but the shell snippet in the original post was fine.
(comprehensible now?)

@Gilles Yes. The diff color coding in the revision log was entirely mis-leading. I didn't check the way the original markdown was formatted, I see what happened now.

@Caleb The diff tends to assume that the markdown was correct but the text changed. Which is often the wrong way round. But then you have the source diff.

9:04 PM
@Gilles Ya I get it. It would be much more useful for me to see a real diff between the markdown source instead of a diff between html outputs. I've made this mistake before.

@Caleb You have that on the suggested edit page. I think there's a user script to have it on every edit

@Gilles I don't have access to the suggested edits page :(
I'll look for the user script tho.

@Caleb I meant the page of each suggested edit, e.g. unix.stackexchange.com/suggested-edits/515

9:49 PM
@Tshepang Looked in a couple places, no luck yet.

@Caleb thanks
if there was, it would nullify my request meta.stackoverflow.com/q/80070/147166

This blog thing is a crack up tho. I just found the google doc used by the SuperUser crew to organize their blog topics, who's doing what, what the publish procedure is, etc. It's literally world editable. Meanwhile the security.se folks are chatting about how to have an authorized chain of people that have to approve posts on certain topics.

@Caleb my idea is that we spam meta with suggested articles
that way, ppl can comment before publication
voting would determine what gets published first
this would have the side-effect of making the quite Meta a bit more alive

You're going to post the entire article on meta? Or just the titles?

@Caleb check what's preferred (i.e. U&L is a shortcut for Unix and Linux Stack Exchange):
4
A: How to be lazy effectively?

GillesSE is the usual abbreviation for Stack Exchange as a whole. “SEI” is the common abbreviation for Stack Exchange, Inc. (the company); nobody uses “SXI”. .sx is likely to become a TLD soon, so it's not really better than .se. I sometimes use U&L when the context makes an SE site name reasonab...

@MichaelMrozek entire article

9:58 PM
That's...no. We're not going to reproduce the entire blog on meta ahead of time

@MichaelMrozek why not?

Then what's the point of the blog? The blog's title could be "Last week on meta.UL, the abridged version"

@MichaelMrozek Agreed! That's not what that tool is for.

@MichaelMrozek blog is for the final approved articles, Meta is for the drafts
can always be deleted from Meta of course, after blog publication

@Tshepang Um, I don't think that says that U&L is the preferred short monker, only that Gilles sometimes uses it and that perhaps capitalizing Unix.SE is a good way of disambiguating it from the tld for a country Jeff Atwood doesn't think exists.
@Tshepang No thank you!

10:03 PM
@Caleb why not?

Drafts will go in the drafts function of the blog software (which is has by the way). Also review and publish schedule functions.

Nobody does it that way, it's an absurd amount of overhead. Write the post, somebody will check/edit it, and post it. That's it

Discussion about what to write about can happen in this or another chat room.

That's what other sites seem to do

 Super User Blog Editor Room

Where the editors drink coffee and try to get things done!

 Gaming Blog Editor room

Wherein we leverage the leak power from our lazers to do this ...

@Caleb would be nice if we just stick to one, and since Gilles' answer was highly-voted, I'd say that's the one to use; it's even quicker to type

10:05 PM
@Tshepang Michael has given a few reasons. The general unsuitedness of the medium also comes to mind. Meta is QnA, not draft publishing or polling software.

@Caleb I was thinking that since we already have a good platform for peer review (voting, editing, commenting), we might as well stretch its use beyond mere Q&A.
instead of using yet-another-service like Google docs

@Tshepang @Gilles also uses emacs. <sarcasm alert> I thought Unix was about being able to do things how I want to do them.

We're really discussing the appropriate abbreviation? Say whatever you want. I'm going to keep calling it UL because the trilogy goes by SO/SU/SF

@MichaelMrozek that's kool too

@Tshepang The system we have is only a good one because it follows strict guidelines about acceptable usage. As a case in point off-topic questions get promptly closed. That's what the system is for. If you try to use it for something else it won't be any good for what it's supposed to do.

10:13 PM
@Caleb That was in jest (when it came from Jeff; the origin is someone sincerely suggesting that SEInc take ownership of the .se domain)

@Caleb "it won't be any good for what it's supposed to do" is a strong statement

@Caleb I'm sure I didn't invent the U&L abbreviation

@Gilles I know. I'm hoping I'm not the only one laughing over the pedantic we're playing here.

Caleb's point about Blogoverflow already having a draft feature is good too. The gaming blog has 6 drafts running simultaneously right now

@Caleb Can happen in this room for now, there's not so much traffic

10:16 PM
@Gilles I would prefer a different room, since with this one, we would get constantly distracted by new questions.
@MichaelMrozek yeah, that's a nice feature

@Tshepang Yes, our 19 questions/day is a huge distraction :)

@Caleb consistency rocks

@Tshepang It's pretty overwhelming.

:)
it does happen actually

@Tshepang Sure. On the days that Lance has internet.

10:26 PM
@Tshepang Click on the U&L icon next to one of the feed's posts, and select “ignore this user” (you'll have to do it for Meta as well)

@Gilles actually the feed is a killer feature of this chat room
my point was basically that the discussion for the blog articles should be separate
perhaps a weak point I must admit

I don't have a problem with making a separate room; it takes about 15 seconds

@MichaelMrozek That sounds like a call to make when the time comes :)
Right now the only time that's come (and gone) is my bedtime.

Yeah, I was trying to find a nice way to say "we should have a blog before we worry about it"

Goodnight gents.
