If we don't watch out, this room is going to get locked.

1:09 AM
@Hosch250 I thought it took weeks for it to get locked.

Yeah, well...

Better to be safe for no reason than to be sorry for a reason that you should've cared about before, right?

Don't worry, they won't let it get locked.
Just making a generic comment to wake the room up some there.

OMG! 2 hours without activity! quick, someone, post something! .........
in The 2nd Monitor, 15 mins ago, by Mat's Mug
we have 8 candidates, 7 hours into the nomination phase... this election is going to be awesome!

@Mat'sMug Well, Simon and Janos are planning on running, but beyond that, I don't know.
Simon said he would consider it, anyway.

awesome!

Loki said no.
And Duck said he never said he would, which is pretty much no.
He said he wasn't patient.

I think he'd make a good candidate

You and Jamal have my votes - you because you were (and are) so patient with me on RD, I know you'd make a good mod, and Jamal because he's proven himself.
200 has been around, but hasn't nominated himself.

3:43 AM
has 200 gone public about a decision?

I don't know, but from what he said about it not being fair before, I think he is waiting to see who runs/not decided.
@Mat'sMug Not as far as I know.
I still have one free vote, and I'm waiting to see the answers to the questions to choose.

5 hours later…
8:32 AM
@Hosch250 You already decided on which candidates to spend the other 3?

1 hour later…
9:41 AM
@Hosch250 I've not decided one way or the other yet.
And no @Mat'sMug I've not seen a nomination from 200 yet.
Which... makes me sad. I hope he decides to stay. It would suck to lose 2 of our mods. It'd be nice to have some continuinity.

@RubberDuck He was in chat earlier today, so he knows the sentiment.

9:58 AM
3 more candidates before we need preliminaries.
I think we'll manage that.

Who was @Mast? 200?
And I guess I should go ahead and explain why I've not made a decision yet. I've kind of been keeping it to myself.
I have a couple of reasons not to run actually...

@RubberDuck Yes.

I am starting a new job next week, so I am likely to be pre-occupied during and directly following the election. That's a biggie.
But I also would feel obligated to be around here if I were to be elected.

^ that's the number one reason to not go for it

Indeed.

10:04 AM
It's supposed to be (and remain) fun, "even" when becoming a mod

I'm here all the time because I love CR. I edit and moderate within my current privileges because I like to. I'm not certain I want to feel a responsibility for it.
2
Yes @Vogel612 it is, but I'm not certain it would remain fun for me if I was a moderator. Hence, no decision yet.

I'm simply not running because I think I miss the experience. There are way better candidates out there.
@RubberDuck If that's how you think about it, you shouldn't do it.

There are lots of great candidates.
There are good reasons for me to run though too. I'm already a very active user, been part of growing a tag community from two users to almost daily questions from many, I care about the tags and good edits... I'd be good at it I think. And, obviously, at least some others think I would be too. Or I wouldn't be here explaining myself.

There's that.

Regardless, nominations don't close for another few days. I suspect I'll make a decision soon.
There are a few names that I'd like to see added to the nominees. If they don't show up, I'll likely step up and run.

10:15 AM
@RubberDuck That's a tactic I haven't considered yet.

Yeah. Don't get me wrong, there are several people if out my trust in there already.
There's just one or two I would like to see there more. If they're not up for it, then I'll toss my hat in the ring.

I think Simon is avoiding us.

Perhaps. We've all let him know how we feel. Best to let it lie now and let him decide.

@RubberDuck So you mean that you won't nominate yourself if I (and others) nominate ourselves?
@Mast I think Simon is starring you.

@SimonAndréForsberg You do happen to be one of those people I find to be uniquely qualified.

10:23 AM
@SimonAndréForsberg I think the effect you're looking for is startling

I have my cousin visiting until Friday so I don't spend all day here.

Basically, it's a matter of comfort. If I feel things are in good hands, I won't run. If I feel like the talent pool is missing something, then I will.
Right now, it's missing something.
Like a fish and a Simon...

@RubberDuck One could say I have the same reasons for not running as you do. Although I don't have a job at the moment, I hope to get one soon, and I have no idea how much time I will have on that job. I am also here a lot because I love CR, and am not certain it would be as fun if I would be a moderator.
That said, I am writing up my nomination at the moment.
3

...... so am I. I think I talked myself into it this morning.

12 mins ago, by RubberDuck
Right now, it's missing something.
It's missing a duck!

10:38 AM
It's interesting how everybody wants everybody else to run
2

@Vogel612 That's how convinced we are of each others capabilities.

That ^

I did have an idea about how we could all nominate each other, and no one would nominate themselves. Like if I would nominate @Mat'sMug and @Mat'sMug would nominate me.
Turns out that wasn't possible though.

I do kind of wish it was actual nominations. Nominate a candidate then they have to accept the nomination if they wish to run.

10:57 AM
Agreed.
I was also under the impression it would work like that.
If it would have, we would've had at least 15 candidates by now.

@Mast perhaps that is the reason why it doesn't work like that :)
2

I was thinking the same thing the moment I wrote it down.

Well, that makes ten. I'm predicting the first beta primary in the history of SE.

@RubberDuck You'll need >10 for that.

@Mast right. I'm thinking we'll get at least one more candidate. At least, I'm hoping.
There's still someone missing....

11:09 AM
@RubberDuck You 'nominated' Heslacher, any idea if he'll accept or not? I haven't heard him about the elections IIRC

any reason why it's not possible to upvote the comments on the nominations? (@Pops?)

@Mast he's lurking in the 2nd monitor.
probably still thinking.

@Mast no clue at all. He got the ping. Hopefully he considers it. I think he'd be a great mod. Quiet.. unobtrusive, but he does a great deal of moderation here already. I just don't think anyone notices.
Which is exactly how a mod should be IMO.

We currently have three moderators. One with lightning fast reflexes, one always available in chat with a load of experience and a quiet one doing very much hard work in the background (generalized, a lot).
You want Heslacher for the 3rd role, don't you?

More or less, yes.

11:19 AM
@Mast Who's who?
Jamal with reflexes, rolfl in chat, and 200 in the background?

Not?

@SimonAndréForsberg so, you're in? :D
race you to mod seat
3
Oooh nice!! Both @SimonAndréForsberg and @RubberDuck are in!

okay so we got 10 nominees now.
200 is not in yet from what I see

Any more than that and we'll have a preliminary round!

this definitely looks like there will be a preliminary

11:31 AM
@Mat'sMug No, I just accidentally wrote up a nomination and misclicked on "Save edits" ;)
4

11:49 AM
This is awesome :-)

12:07 PM
So, @RubberDuck, you're the only candidate (and site member for that matter) who joined after me but also has more rep than me.

Really?
What about Heslacher? Could have sworn he came around after me.
Maybe he only got active after I did.

But does he have more rep than you?
Oh yeah, just barely
He joined 7 months before you.
And I joined 2 months before you.

Oh. Okay. Maybe I just wasn't paying attention.

7 months ...a blink of an eye

Q: Layered Neural Network in Swift

I currently got the network evaluating the response for a given stimulus by propagating the stimulus forwards through the layers and collecting the response at the output layer, which is assumed to be a single neuron. ...

Yup. We'll miss @rolfl, but I'm confident he's leaving things in good hands.

thanks, and that^^^ and I won't be going far.
Monking all.

Eh. I know, but you know what I meant.

12:57 PM
@Donald.McLean now we just need you and then we can have preliminaries

I am still the oldest person running for moderator ..... (in terms of join date)
Simon has me on Rep and Moderation Badges, I wonder which Moderation badges I am missing....., Marshal is probably one of them.

@Jamal ▲▲▲
my record on Spam flags in 80% and the other was Eric Lipperts Post that one time. so I think we can say that was my freebie, Right?
I have a few Declined and Disputed flags there at the top, but I think we can write that off to me being new, back in the day. but I am also at 80% Helpful with them as well.

1:41 PM
I have 1 declined moderator attention flag

@Mat'sMug shut up....
lol

@SimonAndréForsberg There are already more reasonably good candidates than I can vote for.

...was my very first flag actually
I need to flag more

2:09 PM
I've got a few declined flags. Mostly comments I thought were obsolete, but weren't I guess.

2:19 PM
Got 4 of those

2:32 PM
Comment flags are real fluff... I regularly decline things that are flagged "wrong", and delete things anyway ;0 Like, why flag something as "not constructive" when it is "obsolete".
I do that with post flags too... most commonly with mod-attention flags like: "I have included the code in the question now, please reopen." ....
decline the flag, reopen anyway ;0

2:45 PM
picks up jaw on the floor
@rolfl your guest has arrived in the 2nd monitor

@rolfl Hmm, perhaps if you're going to do this, there should be clarification on the meta as to which type of flag to use with which type of comment. It's not always clear. What sort of flag should be used with "Thanks" comments?

too chatty

@rolfl thought you were talking about me behind my back there for a second, then realized you were answering @nhgrif

@rolfl So if it were flagged as "not constructive", you'd decline the flag? If it were flagged as obsolete (the person that was thanked recognized it already), you'd decline the flag?

3:07 PM
"not constructive" is the one that I most often decline. The others are more fuzzy.
Not constructuve has a sentiment behind it that is "this user is being an ass".

I thought that's what "rude/offensive" was for?

If I disagree with that, that the user is not being an ass, then I decline the flag

@nhgrif that carries more weight

I certainly don't think anyone is being an ass when I use the not constructive flag. I've never used that flag with that in mind.

@nhgrif And, how many of your not-constructive flags have been declined.
If the comment is not constructive, then I "helpful" the flag.
if the comment is obsolete, or too chatty, but someone flagged it as "not constructive", then I decline.
All I am saying, is use the right flags for the right purpose.
3
You seem to have been doing fine ;0

3:10 PM
@rolfl what about me? ;)

@Mast AFAIK, we only get three votes, even though there are four positions.

@Hosch250 Oh, yea, probably.
I forgot.
How could I forget that...

I don't know if we can vote for ourselves.

@Hosch250 that's not quite correct
the voting system is Meek STV

@Hosch250 One shouldn't be allowed, but hey...

3:12 PM
@Hosch250 no you can't.

STV -> Single Transferrable Vote
so you get one vote and that can be transferred around :)

@Vogel612 Yea, it works with first choice, second choice and third choice.

you get 3 choices

But it's still one vote.

is there a post about whether they are going to give up 4 choices now because of there being 4 spots open?

3:13 PM
@Malachi I think the system doesn't work that way

I'm 99% sure they won't, because I'm sure I've seen another election with 4/5 candidates and 3 votes.

@nhgrif - you have one delcined comment flag - it was a "other" flag - for mod attention.
(I declined it a while ago).

I have a couple.
Should we nominate Donald McLean?

I think that @Donald.McLean should nominate himself, he is a moderator on other sites that may deter him from being a mod here as well, time stuff you know.

@Malachi I don't think that's the problem in this case.
I asked him why he wasn't running.
His reply was he lost his shoes.
4

3:18 PM
Well, that is logical

When I work from home, I generally just wear slippers.

in The 2nd Monitor, 23 hours ago, by Donald.McLean
@Mast Ok, then. I'm not going to run because I'm not wearing any shoes.

oh I get it now

Oh, you don't need shoes, you just need a mod hat and a diamond.

@Hosch250 Thats after the election, not during the running part.

3:20 PM
OK.
I'm running barefoot, if anybody is interested.

In truth, it seems like we already have a perfectly adequate slate of candidates.

They're aiming for preliminaries.

No, not just because preliminaries...

I hope Heslacher runs.
And mjolka.

Aiming for the best field of mod candidates, and this site is capable of doing that.

A: 2015 Community Moderator Election - Nomination Requests

Hosch250I think mjolka would be a good candidate. From my experience, he is helpful and friendly, and he lives on the other side of the world, so we could have a moderator around at 3:00 AM in the morning (CST/CDT).

@SimonAndréForsberg I don't remember the details, but I think they were disabled one or two Stack Overflow elections ago. Not because voting was bad, but because there was some issue with flagging, and disabling one meant disabling the other.

A: 2015 Community Moderator Election - Nomination Requests

MalachiI think that @JeroenVannevel would be a good Moderator as well. he has more than once been there to help me understand coding aspects and also had the patience to explain things to me through chat.

@Pops probably because both are the same db table and accordingly the same API call...
or some other reason like that
anyways I'm out for today, have fun :D

@nhgrif You just pinged me there, not Quill.
While I agree with the nomination request, I think @Duga is pretty irrelevant to the conversation. Obviously, Duga works whether or not Simon is a mod. — nhgrif 38 secs ago

Okay.

4:28 PM
@Pops - are you aware of if anyone has ever complained about the layout of the election nomination page?
I think the comments are "outdented" instead of indented.
For example, we have:
But we should have:
it makes it hard to tell what the nomination post is vs. the comments, and it reverses the significance of them

Not off the top of my head. I'd search on Meta SE and post there if you don't find anything.

I did search meta.se ... (should have said that), but these things often crop up on site-specific metas too ....

@rolfl That might be intentional?
(reversing the significance)

I will post a meta.se anyway.

> Comments are active during the length of the nomination phase – please comment freely, particularly if there is any way a nominee introduction can be improved or refined to be more clear.

4:32 PM
It's odd because comments on regular site posts are "indented".

My first thought was "that's a weird design but not necessarily wrong" but then I decided (without reading rolfl's logic) that it did look wrong, for the reasons rolfl said.

back in 2011 it was "right"

Q: Comments on election nominations are out-dented, not indented

rolflIn a site election page, there are nominations, and there can be comments on the nominations. The comments on these nominations are "outdented" instead of indented. In searching meta.se for a duplicate (which I could not find), I found this other post about comments on nominations: Why are “hist...

I think many (popular) elections will attract some... interesting nominations. Unless someone withdraws, we'll be going to the primary phase.

It looks like the indentation is created by the space taken for voting and flagging.

@Mat'sMug wow

@Mat'sMug Methinks it's a joke.

mehopes it's a joke...

5:38 PM
Me too
Oh man, you should see the comment that guy left on his nomination.

Once there are more than 30 nominations, the low-scoring rep ones drop out... ;-)

Ah. Automatically, or they just do it?

> @Malachi, I'm not entirely sure. – TessellatingHeckler 1 min ago
Automatically.
They only let 30 continue to the primary.

Oh, yikes.

I rather doubt we'll get that far, though.

5:48 PM
Which means I'd be second to go after Quill.

At least I'm on the first page.

There's only one page.

Not quite #30, but getting close.
I mean, total users sorted by rep.

About 1/3 of the way. Yikes.
And wow.

Would you trust "the 2nd highest contributor" to really be hands-off?
@Hosch250 I believe it's by candidate score, not by rep
Oh nm I missed a part of the conversation

5:51 PM
I hope to have the gold flag badge and 9k before we end.

I hope to have either 4K or 5K reputation before the end.

It should be easy to get 9k before we end here - just about 150 away.

6:09 PM
> I am terribly estatic to see a member of "the silent majority" running! You have a reasonable amount of reputation elsewhere on SE, but haven't been very active here. What I would like to know is, what makes you believe that you know enough about our community to moderate it? We're quite a bit different from sites like SO and Serverfault. – RubberDuck 35 secs ago

No reviews or Meta activity, though.

And none of the badges.
I wish we could upvote comments on nominations.

I might be baiting a bit. I'm genuinely curious about this user. Could provide some valuable insight from the silent majority.

> This post is a bit confusing and not quite clear to me. If you're elected a moderator, can we count on your meta posts, chat messages, and other interactions with the community to be this muddled and unclear?

That ^^

6:29 PM
It was just withdrawn.

So, no primary so far.

So, one thing that concerns me, should y'all vote me in, is that moderators don't vote, they decide. That'll be quite an adjustment for me.
Any thoughts on the topic from the other nominees?

I think that explains everything I wrote in my nomination, right?

6:31 PM
Awww. No primary... Yet.

@RubberDuck I don't think it'll be too much of a change for me. I think it'll just be odd for a couple of days where changes are applied instantly, rather than waiting for them.

I'm still hoping mjolka and Heslacher run.
Yes, it will be an adjustment. But, I think I can do it.

@RubberDuck save that for the Q&A session :)

Eh, it's not really a question yet. I was just wondering if anyone else felt the same.
Like, I just used a custom close reason, I don't think I would have done that if it was binding.
I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because it is not requesting a code review, but is instead asking for an explanation of behavior. While it is an interesting question, I don't believe it is in scope as defined in the help center. — RubberDuck 6 mins ago

for close votes, IMO mods should be last to vote. Single-handledly mod-closing should be seldom, in low-activity times.
> power to the community
2

6:37 PM
Which, again, the sentiment I (attempted) to express exactly in my nomination post.

I agree. It would just be an adjustment.
Okay, now it's a question for the Q&A
Brb

Hmm, what happens during primaries?

I downvote everyone.

A: 2015 Moderator Election Q&A - Question Collection

RubberDuck Moderators don't vote. They decide. Making binding decisions instead of voting will be a paradigm shift for nearly all of the nominees. How to you plan on making this adjustment?

7:06 PM
@Pops disabling one meant disabling the other, it sounds like your system is a bit too tightly coupled. You know there's a site these days where you can get your code reviewed and improved, right?
6
@Mat'sMug @RubberDuck Who was the 11th guy?

Thanks @Simon !
monking btw :)

Hey janos ;-) Monking!
Is there a way to determine whether a nomination was self-removed or CM removed?

hey @janos! are you our 11th candidate? :)

if I can finish writing it on time, I might be ;-)

@janos Wow, it's taking you a long time to write it.
There is a pretty strict character limit though.

I like the length limit. I find that a really great idea

it feels really weird to not be able to vote on anything on the nomination page

Also, I am very aware that any mess I make now will have to be cleaned by others... I've got to be careful ;-)

10:47 PM
@Pops - as an FYI, the election-phase sidebar says: Each community member has 3 votes. Please cast your votes in order of preference, starting with the most desirable candidate first. .... which is sort of Exactly wrong ... members have exactly 1 vote, and it is transferable, which is why it is called STV - single-transferable-vote.... That wording needs some attention.
