5:07 AM
Sorry, on vacation in San Diego. Checking email now

5:18 AM
@ArtOfCode I got a mail from Grace Note, if that's what you're talking about. I just answered.

Yep, not me

@kdopen That's sad, I think you would be a great mod.

Not a problem. WHo did we get? You, Art, and Ziz? If so, that's a great grou[
s/grou[/group/
Though a name like "Grace Note" would probably have gone string in to my SPAM folders

I just answered, let's see if the staff likes my answer. Maybe you get a chance after this.

:) What's the subject line of the email

5:22 AM
@kdopen Well, actually it was in my Spam-suspicion-folder. But probably because it was in english, as I'm a german english languages is already a good sign of spam.

I think 3 is the usual count so yo ushould be fine

@kdopen subject: 'Would you be interested in moderating Open Source Stack Exchange?'

Definitely nothing with that subject line then :)
Congrats. Seriously, the three of you probably have more time than I do for moderating.

@kdopen Not sure, I had surprisingly much time in the private beta (that lead to me getting so much reputation). That's not always the case, but I should be able (as I just wrote) to look nearly every day at least short at the site. Enough to look for flags and keep an eye on meta.

Ok. Well, I'll check in again tomorrow night before hitting the pillows. The family is on vacation for the next two weeks.
G'night from me .. g'day to you
@Zizouz212 @ArtOfCode Congrats and it's about time they nominated someone.

5:28 AM
@kdopen sleep well

3 hours later…
7:59 AM
Hey!
@Mnementh I wouldn't be too worried though: if you've got time to review a few flags and stuff, and kind of chat with the mod team on other issues, you'll be fine.

8:48 AM
Guys, I have a hunch that the mods will be @ArtOfCode, @Mnementh, and myself :P

Heh. I wonder why you'd think that.

:P

OK, so we might get another mail sort of 1400 UTC saying the diamonds are ready.

Alright :)
Are you ready?

Yep :)

8:53 AM
So what exactly did they say then?

Who, FSF?
Also, @Mnementh, congratulations!

Yep

I'll drop that in when I'm on a computer instead of a phone - give me 30 or so to get up :)

Oh yeah, no problemo

9:23 AM
@Zizouz212 - my reply:
We're looking to see whether the FSF would be interested in collaborating with us in getting answers to questions about free software. Our arrangement with the OSI has come to a point where they have agreed to promote us as a source of answers on their website, sending people to us. We wondered if the FSF would consider something similar.

As to the free/open source issue, there is a debate going on around that on our site. We do consider questions about free software to be "on-topic" for the site, and we do answer them. The name is a slightly more difficult issue: the site's community woul

11:55 AM
Thanks

12:33 PM
@ArtOfCode Alright. By the way... The community wants to change it to "Free & Open", without the word source.

@Zizouz212 Whoops. Didn't actually check, just went on memory. Oh well, it's similar enough.

Yep, but in case they email back, make sure to point it out

Aye.

I've been thinking about proposing a new site, like the open info thing I did, which would be more focused on creative works.

@Zizouz212 Please don't. This site has not yet reached a critical mass of users, and we should do more that attract those into creative works to this site.

12:43 PM
Ummmm, okay
It wouldn't be a copy of this site though...

There is just a tiny core of perhaps 20 users that currently create the content on this site. Unless we can bring in new blood, this beta will fizzle out after 90 days.

fizzle? I wouldn't be so sure. Our main focus is not on adding content, but marketing and promoting the site.

It is not a matter of being a copy or not. It is a matter of not spreading the people and efforts too thinly

It's fine if we have a period of only 1 or 2 questions a day, as long as we can promote it, we'll build a user base and such
Right now, we literally have no site promotion

So now we know all the mods :)

12:46 PM
Correct me if I'm wrong, but we have content, but we need other users to come along with their questions

Use your secret mod chat room well

Oh lol

no unilateral actions ;)

First plot: ban the other mods :P

I don't think we have quality content. IMNSHO most of the seed questions are no-brainers that very few people actually need to have answered.

12:47 PM
@curiousdannii Oh yeah, I'll definitely try to watch out on those now too. To be honest, I think I'm going to more sit down and relax with the diamond
@FreeRadical Which is why we need to promote the site, not necessarily the content then. People will come if we can show them an attractive site.

I wouldn't be concerned with promoting the site, it will do just fine

I agree, not reason for a lot of concern, but we should have it on a list of things to do

In fact, many of the seed question are just dupes of things pulled from FSF and OSI and Wikipedia - if you Google, the originals will appear on the SERP, not this site.

I think the mods should focus on getting great wording for close reasons, the on-topic description etc
3

Right now, people are exhausted because they don't have anything to ask. That's normal for new sites
@curiousdannii That's exactly on the top of my list :)

12:50 PM
and making the CMs change the site name

Help descriptions, and then close reasons

you should probably collectively threaten to resign the day after you get appointed if they don't change the name

Uhhh
That sounds a little harsh... And I don't think I'm very aggressive authoritative kind of thing...

:P well it would certainly get their attention!

It would... But I'll let the others to that :)

12:51 PM
But I do think you will need to put the request loudly and forcefully very early on, or else it's unlikely to ever happen

Yep, I'll definitely push for it, but I won't lead it. I'll let someone who has more of an aggressive authority ish thing do that, like @ArtOfCode ;)

Aggressive authority eh? That's a new one :)

Well, maybe not so much aggressive, but you look like you can be strict and right to the point more effectively then say me...

Heh. We'll just have to see how it all goes :)

Yep :)

12:58 PM
How can the site be promoted? SE is already running ads for it on other SE sites so that is happening already. But beside that?

@curiousdannii: Actually I would expand the on-topic-description first before we change site-name. We want to change our name only once, so we should be sure about what we include and then be sure the name expresses that scope well.

They aren't running ads though.

@FreeRadical They do?

Has anyone posted advertisements on community-ads posts on graduated sites?
@FreeRadical There are only hot network posts, which aren't really ads at all.

Wll they work as ads.

1:00 PM
Yep, we have ads on a meta post, but they don't actually display them on other sites
Each graduated site will have a meta post with the [community-ads] tag, and that is where you need to post them. Ads that attain a score of 6 on those posts will be eligible for display on that site.

So I've been hallucinating when I spotted links to "hot questions" in 220x250 format linking to our main site?

No, those are ads, but they're really just links to questions that have been upvoted. You might hit one or two if you are absolutely lucky, but they are really rare, and imo, really ugly

How can the site be promoted? SE is already running hot question posts for it on other SE sites so that is happening already. But beside that?

Display the ads that people have created
I'll pass an example.
That post is on Photography SE
Any answer, or ad suggestion that gets a score of 6 will be displayed on the site, in the real sidebar image format
Uh, are people still around?

1:21 PM
@Zizouz212 There is also the featured question type ad

featured? You mean bounties?

It shows in the same spot as the community ads, but is a question instead. I'm not sure if it uses a network question or not
no

What do you mean by featured then?
Or do you mean the tag?

They look like that, and show up where the community ads do

Those are hot network posts, just summed up into an ads

1:24 PM
yeah, but they're more visible than the hot questions list

Yep, but then they also nearly never pop up due to competition with other ads, 25 competing for 1 spot versus 25 for 10 down below in the hnq list
And, they do look kind of ugly... :/

@Zizouz212 The non-beta ones look nicer

Well obviously, it uses their site design and css rules to create them, with betas, it's already a plain looking css, so they won't really be pretty :)

3 hours later…
4:28 PM
@FreeRadical You around?

4:44 PM
I am )

Afternoon :)
By the way, I made a new ad because my old one was controversial

4:59 PM
Ooh, let's see

5:25 PM
Anyone here?

hmm

I am now a moderator!

upsi

Hi all

i have new buttons

5:26 PM
Are the diamonds in?

just now

Yep :)
I've already accepted the agreement, and handling the first flag :)

the first flag I see is one I made some time ago, kdopen also flagged it
Have to reread it, what this was about

2nd flag...
Anyways, how is everyone doing today?

congrats on the diamonds everyone

5:39 PM
Oh thanks :)

thanks

6:35 PM
Lol, I know. I'm not undeleting that anyway
Also, I've created a moderation room: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/info/26593/…
@Mnementh @ArtOfCode Look above
What happened to you peeps?

Yep :D
I'm user2, so proud...

I'm user 69
get it
69
huhuhuhuh

Don't worry, I'm user 69 on this site :D

98 :(

Q: How do I ask for a license recommendation?

Zizouz212I want to ask a recommendation for a license to apply to my open project. How do I ask these sorts of questions?

I'm sort of disappointed that my name isn't now blue and italic.

Q: Moderator Pro Tem Announcement

Grace NoteThroughout the beta, we need members from the site whose focus is to engage the community, both in community-building issues and site management. That's why we select a few members from each community to act as temporary, provisional Moderators. You can read about the program here: Moderators Pro...

8:30 PM
Please welcome your new moderators: Mnementh, ArtOfCode and Zizouz212!

1 hour later…
9:45 PM
And I think the votes show that much of the community disagreed

@curiousdannii My action. I did debate, and all I've done in the end is create the multi-licensing tag. There's no synonym, so people are free to use whichever they feel is most appropriate.

Oh, no synonym? We can reevaluate it after a while then, see how the two get used

I originally put the synonym in, re-thought, and removed it again
If multi- doesn't get used, we can just remove it again

For custom close reasons, do your mod tools enable you to more easily get a list and categorise our closed questions? It would be good to have some stats on what has already been closed.

@curiousdannii Have you got mod tools priv?

9:50 PM
nope
I've gotta go

OK - I'll put something together
@curiousdannii Or more simply, can you see this page?
In fact, I can do this the easy way:

Air
10:16 PM
@ArtOfCode "10k tools" are actually "2k tools" on public betas. He's a bit short of that.

@Air Aye, I just didn't check his rep

Air
Easy mnemonic, convert from binary (independent of the "k")

1 hour later…
11:46 PM
@ArtOfCode okay so there's 32 off-topic questions to categorise
That's not too many

@curiousdannii Sorry, categorise for what?
