5:50 AM
Yay! I got the beta badge!

6:45 AM
@Unihedron It's a nice badge to have, isn't it?

6:57 AM
Morning all.

@ArtOfCode morning

How is everyone this morning? Bright, perky, agreeable?

@ArtOfCode Bright and agreeable, certainly
I'll have to give perky another thought
Though the associations I have with perky might say more about me than it does about the word itself.

7:42 AM
Heh. I'll admit that was half deliberate.

Q: Create a help/on-topic page specific to this community

JeroenBeing a good SE-citizen I looked at help/on-topic before asking my first question here, to find that this page is just about void of useful information. A basic summary of what is and also is not on topic would be fantastic, but if that's not available yet perhaps a set of links to meta-discuss...

Q: Open Source ads on Stack Exchange

Nicolas RaoulLet's create ads to make Open Source more widely known! Propose your designs below, specifying the target site. When they gather a few upvotes, please anyone post them on the target sites. Also, please upvote the ads where they are posted: Only ads with more than 6 votes get displayed.

the public beta has brought in a lot of licensing questions it seems

Q: What do I do if my contributors are split into two camps?

overactor Note: this is a hypothetical situation, not one I have actually encountered. (And one I hope I won't encounter) I started a small open source project and have gathered a few loyal committers. We don't have much in the way of a hierarchical structure and make our decisions by way of consensu...

does that seem answerable to everyone and does it need significant improvement?

12:33 PM
@overactor The question could be considered too opinion based, but I think it's okay. It's probably a good model question for the kind of advice questions we'd like to allow

@curiousdannii I'm aware I'm walking the line a bit.
Good to know you think I'm on the right side
I wanted to show new public beta users we do more than licenses, but obviously don't want to set a bad example

My suggestion would be to add more detail about what is causing the division

A: How does Meta Stack Exchange work?

Jon SeigelRequired Tags When asking a question on Meta, you must include one of the four following required tags. This helps classify questions according to the type of response needed. bug You've found an erroneous or unexpected behaviour in the system that needs to be fixed. Your question will include...

> feature-request - You have an idea for a new feature to be added to the Stack Exchange network engine. Your question will contain the details of your proposal, along with a justification that the new feature is needed.
I think all of our feature-request tagged questions are mistagged: meta.opensource.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/…

12:47 PM
Halloooooo!

Hi!

Heya!

We've already got 22 new users...

@curiousdannii I think you might be right
@curiousdannii do you have any ideas for what kind of issue I could invent?

@overactor Nope, sorry.
Actually maybe. I've heard that Angular 2 is very different from Angular 1
the specific library doesn't matter
But the project hugely depends on an external library which has a major breaking version change
Do you stick with the old or change to the new? Sticking with the old may have a higher support cost as other developers abandon it, changing to the new will need a massive rewrite

12:53 PM
@curiousdannii I'd like to keep it hard-software agnostic though
can i phrase that in a way that doesn't scream software?

@overactor If it's just an example then it doesn't matter?

@curiousdannii it will shape the answers though

@overactor Yeah but that will happen whatever the example
And I think it does need a more specfic example

@curiousdannii better?

It's still pretty generic...
see what other's think
time for me to go to bed
good luck! :)

scratch that, we have 2 of them in there
@Zizouz212 Hot Network Questions

Oh. Ok :)
Yep, I see ourselves. Also, did we get a twitter account or something? Some questions that were asked today just went to 250 views (previous high was like 150 and that was asked the first day in private)

@Zizouz212 public beta I'd guess

But that doesn't make sense.
250 views in a single day? Outpassing the entire private period?

sure it does
public beta doesn't have a log-in wall

1:35 PM
That's true, it feels... weird

1 hour later…
2:53 PM
@Zizouz212 One of our questions was HNQ today, which accounts for lots of views

3:27 PM
Yeah, I noticed that. So exciting! :D
@ArtOfCode Sending tag wikis?

@Zizouz212 I am indeed. 3 tags, both wikis and excerpts. 6 suggested edit reviews waiting to be done.

Well, you got 6 approvals on my part

Ta :) just someone else to complete them then :)

It will come soon :)

Indeed. And I can follow the review history, of course.
@Zizouz212 jump back over to the discussion...

@Zizouz212 This is what I meant about : meta.stackexchange.com/questions/98883/…

The second post I marked as a duplicate should have the tag then...

@Zizouz212 No, because the community ads tag actually activates the ads, and displays them on the site. Any ad over 6 votes will get displayed - but we don't want our own ads being displayed here.

We can't tag it for voting on the ads? Anyways, it's interesting...

We could, but there'd be no point because it will end up displaying our ads on our pages, which is completely useless in terms of promotion.
Anyway, it's a mod-only tag, and I doubt the CMs would add it for us

5:07 PM
I flagged it, so if they deem it acceptable, at least they know about it

5:41 PM
Do we know when they are going to pick a mod
?

Air
@TrevorClarke No, we don't.
On Engineering, it was about 2 weeks in between the nominations thread and the announcement.

2 weeks sounds about right

Air
The community manager handling the site has to decide it's time to make a short list, then look through the nominations to see who's interested and how the community feels, plus do some checking of site activity on their own. Then they have to contact a few individuals from the short list, either to invite them if they expressed interest or to inquire about interest if they did not. Then they have to wait for a response from those users.

Just sit tight and wait, they'll get round to it.

6:50 PM
@overactor That's why I got the badge for a question with 1K views. That's an extreme jump compared to the other questions. Two other questions barely broke 100, all other are way below.

@TrevorClarke Could be more. Sites have gone for 40+ days without pro tem mods. It's generally not an issue, though.

@Mnementh congratz
we'll get more steady numbers soon I bet
Oh, my question is in the HNQ too...

@overactor It's getting hot in here... open source is coming ;-)

7:10 PM
@HDE226868 if mods are needed in the first week then that's a signal for the future

@ratchetfreak I meant within the first month. But you're right. :-)

7:42 PM
Hallo!

@Zizouz212 Hallo, einen schönen Tag!

Good afternoon?

You greeted in german, so I greeted back
is greeted right? it feels somehow wrong

No it is right :)

it's too warm to think properly

hey guys
is this a good question

Q: How much of the project needs to be open source for it be be considered open source?

Trevor ClarkeI know that you can make parts of a project open source and keep other parts colosed source. Suppose I have a peice of software and I only make 1 line of the code in the software open source. My question: Can I classify this as open source? If yes, are there any limits to this? If no, why no...

A: Are open source developers at risk of being scammed?

massonpjI am not aware of this "scam" and am not aware of the issue being raised with the Open Source Initiative or other organizations promoting Free and Open Source Software (Free Software Foundation, Software Conservancy, EFF, etc.), nor other related areas such as the open content movement, and the C...

9:31 PM
I just stumbled across this SE site from the "Hot networks questions". There aren't any guidelines in opensource.stackexchange.com/help/on-topic. What kinds of questions should I ask about/look for information on here?

@jacwah As always, ask about what you think will be on topic.
There's no real harm if a question gets closed.

Air
@jacwah Which question brought you in, out of curiosity?

@jacwah Here are some guidelines. Basically, licensing, marketing, organization and management of open source projects

Ah, the HNQ we had earlier. Proof they're effective :)

9:36 PM
And a worthy question to get on the list

Thank you @ArtOfCode. Maybe this could be added to the help center, at least temporarily?

It's frustrating sometimes on small sites how the bad questions get on the list and none of the good ones!

@jacwah We're hoping to get moderators sometime in the next couple of weeks, at which point they can add it. I don't think the community managers will do it unless we start having problems - but meantime I'm going to point people to that link.

Air
@curiousdannii Check out our first "hot"question on Engineering SE...
Not difficult to see why that attracted views

@All: On-topic/off topic guidelines while we don't have a help center.

9:38 PM
@ArtOfCode Oh, alright!
@curiousdannii Yes, it was an interesting read

^ That message is pinned so people coming into chat can pick up on it (hopefully)

10:23 PM
hey guys
my questions are back
@ArtOfCode I am somehow now at -2.... well im thinking of deleting

I contributed my first patch to an open source project recently. I made two posts to the project's mailing list, but they have been ignored for two days now. A couple of other posts have been posted back and forth between other devs since then. I put effort into it and put myself out there, but now I don't feel very motivated to continue...
The list is quite low volume, but I still feel rejected

idk why everyone is downvoting my nomination
@jac
@jacwah
you there

@TrevorClarke What's up?

have you voted for a nominator yet
?
@jac

@TrevorClarke if you delete, they'll assume you've lost interest. Having a nomination, even negatively voted, registers your interest.

10:38 PM
yup
do you care to vote for me

A nominator? XD

A: Who should moderate this site?

Trevor Clarke My name is Trevor Clarke I am 15 years old, I live in Toronto. I am generally on the site between 07:30 and 21:00 EST, I have been a part of the Stack Exchange community for over 2 years. Throughout my years I have spent time doing front and back end web development along with licensing...

Yeah I've voted on a few of the moderator nominees
I don't think you should give yourself a hard time over the score

@Trev what the man says is true :)

ik
but like -2
thats crap

10:40 PM
This is not really the behaviour I expect of a moderator though...

well
I have not given up
im just saying

People voting against someone being a moderator does not necessarily mean they don't appreciate what they do for the site.

That's fine! Just don't spam everyone in chat with it

ok
fine
@jac

Someone could upvote 10 of your questions and answers, and downvote your moderator nomination. They are separate opinions, and a downvote in one place doesn't mean you are not appreciated in other ways.

10:43 PM
ok
where is the SE stats page at

Which stats are you looking for? There's a summary for the site on Area 51, or more detail at data.stackexchange.com

oh thats it data.se

we are not on there yet tho

I'm not sure how often the data is updated. It doesn't include private beta sites but now that we're public we should show up in the next refresh
Ah - it shows at the top right corner: Data updated 2 days ago

11:00 PM
@trichoplax once a week, every Sunday evening IIRC

Thanks :) @TrevorClarke there's your answer

11:26 PM
@trichoplax Thx for ur help

No problem :)
