Q: Resources for Inquiry-based Projects with Undergraduates

JordanI am teaching an undergraduate course which consists entirely of exploratory projects. I'm looking for projects where a Calculus student can make discoveries within an hour, and an advanced undergraduate can continue even after twenty hours. I prefer projects where students can do short investiga...

Q: Should we be more welcoming of "technical" questions?

Cape CodeFollowing up a recent meta post wondering about the direction this site is taking, I wanted to discuss the possibility of changing one of our current habit, which is to close "technical" questions as off-topic. While some are clear cuts, say someone asking about the content of an algorithm, som...

Jeffrey Beall's website is suddenly empty - no posts, no lists of predatory journals and publishers
I wonder what's going on???

@ff524 did you try logging in? I don't have an account (and not sure I want one).

No, I don't have an account. (That site has accounts? What for?)

@ff524 I am not sure it does. I wonder if it is just down.

@ff524 I have my reservations about him. It would be nice if there was a more inclusive group doing the work. I had a question about open access consortia a while back. Apparently there is little desire to provide quality assurance for open access.

@StrongBad I also had reservations - both about some of the criteria for listing journals, and some of the ideological stuff he wrote.
I wish there was a better way both to label predatory journals, and to rehab them - some of these "publishers" are not trying to be scammers, they just have no idea how to run a journal.

@StrongBad That site isn't helping it's case much. Reads like any one of a number of "Speaking Truth to Power" conspiracy pages.
Their ranting about the Frontiers journal series really put it over the top. If there was ever a clear case of a self-inflicted wound that landed a publisher on the list, Frontiers is it.
