Q: Is it proper english to put an apostrophe s after a proper noun to denote is?

silicongolemFor example, I would like to write "Fred's going to the restaurant." Instead of "Fred is going to the restaurant." I understand that an apostrophe s after a proper noun conventionally denotes that proper noun's possession.
