Okayyyyy Moderatorssssssssssss, another query from meee. In some other chatrooms, I have seen long lines of text are shortened as in they have a clickable "(see full text)". Why do we not have that here? As in I keep getting "this message is too long" here ...

Yesssssss
Nice!
@AIQ Things are generally okay. Thanks for asking. I have recently been active in other rooms and sites.
What's new with you? I haven't seen you on ELL lately
@AIQ Just so you know I didn't do anything except copy and double-paste

@EddieKal That's weird because when I write something that gets too big I have to break it up - sometimes into 3 parts before posting here
@EddieKal Yeah I have been here lurking in the shadows ... I am inactive on the main site as I am trying all day to find some work ... it's a little tough now
@AIQ Hmmm beats me. M.A.R. may have an answer to that.
@AIQ Best of luck! I know how things are in these times

also, I am ineligible for most jobs that I can actually get because ... I am not a Canadian or a Permanent Resident ...
Thanks!

@AIQ Don't feel like getting a PhD?
You could ride out the pandemic and economic slump that way
retaining all the perks of being a student
AIQ
AIQ
@EddieKal I honestly couldn't do it
and I have already gotten my 3 year work permit ... which is a one time deal ...
so I need to find a job and work for at least a year before I can apply for becoming a PR
I see.

getting the job - one that relates to my field - is the hard part now ...
With Ontario and Quebec going downhill, and with all the layoffs, everyone is looking for jobs in the comparatively better province, BC
so it's a little competitive ...
@AIQ Not the best time to be shunted into the job market.

Yeah definitely not ...

@AIQ If you select all the text in a message and type ctrl+K, it'd turn into code formatting. If you don't, you can evade the 500 character limit for a message with shift+enter and turn it into a multiline message. Multiline messages don't have markdown though.
If you do do shift+enter, the character limit is around 20k characters IIRC.

> Recent research has revealed that C. geographus uses a form of insulin as a means of stunning its prey. This insulin is distinct from its own (with shorter chains) and appears to be a stripped down version of those insulins found in fish. Once this venom passes through a fish's gills, the fish experiences hypoglycaemic shock, essentially stunning it and allowing for ingestion by the snail.
@snailplane - a curious fact about snails

Word of the day: Latinx students
Latinx is a gender-neutral neologism, sometimes used instead of Latino or Latina to refer to people of Latin American cultural or ethnic identity in the United States. The ⟨-x⟩ suffix replaces the standard ⟨-o/-a⟩ ending of nouns and adjectives that are typical of grammatical gender in Spanish. Its plural is Latinxs. The term was first seen online around 2004. It has later been used in social media by activists, students, and academics who seek to advocate for individuals living on the borderlines of gender identity. The term became widespread in US universities by 2014. Words used for similar...

@Mitch No, nobody does this in fucking Spanish because you simply cannot: it violates every bit of phonotactics that the language is built on. And not only is it unpronounceable, it also makes a mockery of grammar. It is far beyond foolish and well into absurd beyond measure. It's fucked up.
Sounds like English speakers projecting their values onto others that mostly don't care again.

Q: Are questions about English language certifications on-topic?

anlarIs it an appropriate place to ask questions about language certifications like IELTS, CAE and others? E.g. questions about exam format, learning materials.

@M.A.R. What the hell is he talking about here?
@M.A.R. I followed the time stamp and had a quick look see of the chat log. They completely lost me. What? What?

@RegDwigнt As bad as that was, your own adopted country beat it with Auschwitz & assorted death camps, not to mention Einsatzgruppen.
in English Language & Usage: Multi-Layered Discourse Room, Aug 14 at 0:06, by Robusto
Not to mention your native country. I mean, really.

Genocide. Apparently it's the first game a country plays when it gets a little power.
What...
@EddieKal follows the arrows. There are several discussions going on at once.
Also worth noting that ELU is way more liberal about the sort of topics they allow for discussion
Also I think what we are doing here is called meta chat. Let's rename this room the meta ELU chat AKA ELL chatroom

shrug if it's going to be "chatter", at least it's organized
@EddieKal so, to answer your question, they're doing their usual fun whataboutisming.
@EddieKal that nobody uses 'latinx' or any similar variation in the languages where the distinction would be most important
It's an English coinage to feign concern for other people.
@M.A.R. Ohh so he is railing against the word "Latinx"
@EddieKal yes, and since he's fluent in half of European languages, I'd say his opinion is worth consideration
18:14
@M.A.R. I have recently (in the past year or so) started using that word because I understood it to be a preferred word in the Latin American activist community
I didn't really look into it, but Wikipedia confirms that understanding just now
> Scharrón-del Río and Aja (2015) have traced the use of Latinx in authors Beatriz Llenín Figueroa, Jaime Géliga Quiñones, Yuderkys Espinosa Miñoso, and Adriana Gallegos Dextre.

When you are contacting a potential employer, how do you address them in the email if you don't know their gender/sex?
I mean say you know their name but you are not sure if they are male or female ... Usually, we use *Good morning/Hello Mr. Lastname* or *Ms. Lastname.*
So if I am unsure, should I go *Good morning Firstname Lastname*
as in *Good morning Bruce Wayne*
or what?
Just *Good morning* sounds lazy ... idk
italics
22:53
"Good morning" alone sounds fine
