Semantic satiation is a psychological phenomenon in which repetition causes a word or phrase to temporarily lose meaning for the listener, who then perceives the speech as repeated meaningless sounds. Well those are just footnote markers, and the internet has made it easier to see footnotes by making them into [hover] tooltips
Or just hover text, duh.
