I looked up "encouraging" in Cambridge dictionary and it says "making you feel more confidence or hope"
Shouldn't the words be "confident" and "hopeful"? Or maybe "giving you more confidence or hope"
02:11
@M.A.R. Um... I don't think so. I've never heard that one before, but it sounds completely natural, although obviously joke-y.
@AIQ Yeah, their version is at best grammatical, but not particularly idiomatic.
dictionary.cambridge.org/us/plus/quiz/image These image quizzes with household items are so difficult for me (when done properly, without looking at the answers).
Whisk, kettle, ladle... I mean who uses these words anyway. I much prefer "the thing you do the eggs with", "the tea thing", "the big spoon thing, you know, ein Loeffel in German".
Actually, that's also a spoon in German. Jesus. What did I think the word for a spoon was?
02:47
These lv. 4 ones (farthest to the right) are the most difficult, but for real, though. Without looking at the words I know from 0 to 2 out of 6 on each of those. Axolotl, seriously? "Congratulations, you've finished the quiz!" Lol, it's mocking me.

That’s what happens to be people who axolotl ittle questions on ELU.
The pics they post there are kinda disturbing, though.

@userr2684291 I guess I never really thought of axolotl as a rare word, because it does come up often enough, but I suppose only in certain contexts. Generally speaking, it probably really is a rare word.

@CowperKettle This word reminded me of "John Wick". Have you watched the series?
Though the pronunciation is different.

Hey guys, if you were to tell somebody about ELL, how would do say it? "The English Language Learners Stack Exchange Community ..." or "The English Language Learners Community" - Sorry, not tell, like if you were to write it down ...
There is an English learning community on the stack exchange platform, it's called ELL. It has a wise Russian Kettle made of copper and a Snail who caries the world knowledge on her back, and a guy who's IQ is ranked A. :Teeth Smile:

lol well done ...
but I gotta keep "English Language Learners"
@AIQ I just end up saying "there's a site, you know, and we do, you know, and there's stuff there, you know"
Honestly, any explanation that would do justice is lengthy, and I've found people are not really excited about hearing lengthy explanations of how some site on the internet works
AIQ
AIQ
@M.A.R. Ah, like I want to write it down (formal) ...
I guess link to things you find important should do it, in-context and relevant to the matter being discussed
AIQ
AIQ
But I have to mention the name ...
I will link it, but if you had to write out the name how would you do it
Spark their curiosity: "About capitalization, you can check this ELL.SE response: link" "Ooooh, what kind of food is an ELL?" "Well, ELL is . . . "
As for the explanation, stick to the core principles, but don't give too many details about anything

@M.A.R. this is nice ...
No, not giving any details ... but I still need to write out the full name at some point
ELL is a Question and Answer site with more focus on answer quality and references than other sites of similar nature on the internet.
. . . At least I hope so.

Very helpful.
A dozen native speakers of English frequent it, where they answer learner problems.
If it was asked about any further, say: But your problem needs to have some substance. No one is happy about doing a random person's homework online.
And the rest
@AIQ Usually, if it's me saying that, with the period and all, I'm being sarcastic
AIQ

I am not ....
All that is actually very helpful
Oh fo show
I have a thing for being helpful
Also, congrats @Eddie!

hmmm ... this part needs rephrasing "answer learner problems"
Rephrase as you see fit
But as I said, people grow bored of talking about this very easily, so be as concise as possible

hmm ... I will ... no, really, heartfelt gratitude ...
@M.A.R. Thank you!

@AIQ Thanks for being so active on the site. I am still climbing up the learning curve. You have been a great help to the community!

@snailcar I just thought the word sounded exotic, that's why I italicized it. But yeah, I don't think of specialized / technical vocabulary like words for different foods, or animals, or tools as inherently rare, except they kinda are in general.
12:55
I have seen the animal in question before, but I don't know its name in my first language. I know of sun animalcules, if that's worth any points.
Also, I joined a Discord channel yesterday and wrote that word only, axolotl, and got banned immediately.
I mean today (I went to bed really late).
They thought I was trolling, I think. In their defense, I was.

KentaroI don't know if it is appropriate to post "any way thank you for your service message" here. But I hope this be not deleted. I have been not here for a while, but there was time when I was quite active here and I (lol) always confronted with ColleenV if I look back ( am I correct?^^ ). I, a pro...

Q: Does "comprehend" mean "understand" or "include" in this long sentence?

user86301I really couldn't decide on the meaning of "comprehend" in this sentence. Does it mean "understand" or "include/comprise/encompass", or something else? Could anyone help please? Many thanks. I don't mean the question, but the writing in the book.
I know its a famous book and all that
