From reddit.com/r/Showerthoughts/comments/g7877f/…: "'Turn the volume up' and 'Turn the volume down' both can make you sound old". It took me a while to get this, lol. I kept trying to figure out what might be wrong with those expressions.
By wrong I mean old-fashioned.
the volume up → up the volume?
Haha.
It's about whether the current volume level bothers you or you can't hear the thing properly.
OK, I admit I wanna sound old
Although when it's especially loud, I jerk-yell "JESUS", and when it's not, "what?"
Yes, and you squint, too, in the second case, as thought it's going to help.
Well, maybe it will, actually. It's that blind people principle where your other senses sharpen (more likely they just get to focus on them instead of on visual stuff).
Hm. Maybe your instincts aren't that off, @M.A.R..

So the caveman of our story thinks he hears a faint roar, and his facial expression includes squinting. He discovers the tiger in its camouflage and he jumps up a tree just in time
Yes, and you also suddenly... bestill yourself, but squinting might not be necessary. But I can't judge it properly because I'm now thinking of a person in a jungle who heard a strange sound.
The tiger sadly eats the red riding cavegirl
Wait wait. In that image, the guy isn't squinting at all. He wouldn't think to close his eyes, that's for certain.
Wait, I'm getting another vision...

What is the best way to tell a native speaker that they should add some references or examples to their answer? Without any usage examples from reliable sources, sometimes it is hard to determine the accuracy of an answer. I am reading an answer a native speaker (seems like they are) has written to a question. And I can't quite tell if what they have said is accurate. This is because I don't particularly know about this topic or nuance. So, how do I know what they have written is correct?

Q: Requests for native speakers to answer questions

WendiKiddI have been seeing a somewhat increasing trend lately of questions which end with a variation of this sentence: I would like to hear a native speaker's opinion, please. Though I am sure that the OPs do not intend any harm, I do not feel this is a productive addition to a question. Honestly ...

Joke.
Are we allowed to edit our answers to the questions?

@ColleenV I am a native speaker. When someone asks specifically for an answer from native speakers, I would ask if there is a specific reason it has to be from a native speaker. If they say that their answer could be better, I would explain that will not always be the case and if the answer is bad/por quality it will hopefully be downvoted by other users to show it is low quality.

@AIQ My education is electrical engineering with a signal processing speciality
I'm working as a programmer but on stuff that requires my background
@Daniil Sounds good. One thing to be aware of is that some non-native speakers find it offensive to suggest that only native speakers are fluent enough to answer your question.
Frankly, non-native speakers often do a better job of explaining the rules behind something because they've studied it, where a native speaker may be relying on just "knowing".
@ColleenV Use me as a reason to not request a native speaker. Just because it's my native language doesn't mean I can explain anything about it in a clear and concise manner.

J.R. didn't pull any punches on the Meta question. I had forgotten how frustrated we were about it.
If you don’t want to hear from the whole community, leave. ELU is a site dedicated to “linguists and serious etymologists.” If that’s who you want your answers from, ask there. As for your concern about "some answers from non-native speakers inadequate at best, if not downright misleading,” that’s what downvotes are for. Most of the time, the community catches those erroneous answers and speaks up. Moreover, nativeness is an unreliable litmus test. I’ve seen some bad answers from native speakers at both sites. — J.R. ♦ Jun 25 '17 at 18:43
Idiom of the day: "didn't pull any punches"
@Jasper We are having a weird regime called "self-isolation", under which people are advised to stay home. The police tends not to notice that everyone is still going around. Thus far they only fine you if you go walking in the center of the city without any excusable purpose, or if you go to a beach for some sun.
I am going for a jog at about 6 am in order not to be a bad example for others.
But kids are still running around in the streets, more so because the schools were closed.
AIQ
AIQ
@ColleenV I remember pointing out in my Meta question something similar
I quoted J.R.: "Note: I'm a native speaker; therefore, I know what I am talking about does not qualify as proof of correctness."
Thus far we have about 1000 people who have been diagnosed as COVID carriers in our city. That's not very much per 1.5 million citizens.
That's good news though
Every day some 50 to 100 persons are getting diagnosed.
12:55
do you know how many are being hospitalized though?
AIQ
AIQ
@ColleenV Here is a bit of what I wrote: I will always trust native and non-native speakers who have established themselves here and in ELU. The quality of their answers speaks volumes. But sometimes (very rarely though) I find users I can't trust.
Yes, there are statistical bulletins published every day on e1.ru
We see a lot of cases in our state, but most never need the hospital
@ColleenV I am a native speaker, but I am typically slow-witted, especially when I need to type it out.,and it's hard for me to verbalize my thoughts and thinking. but I think any request that the Native Speaker's Only (NSO) suggestion isn't conversational, iommediately move it to ELU

@GWarner Yes, some people just want to swim with the sharks
12:56
@ColleenV Same here. There are about 30 people right now in Yekaterinburg whose condition is critical
Our state is starting to report "number of tests" instead of "number of people tested" which is making it hard to understand what is going on
Thus far, only 3 people have officially died from COVID, but the Russian system for defining the cause is quite quirky.
People who test positive have to get tested multiple times to determine when they can get out of quarantine, so the numbers of "positive tests" gets inflated.
Another 7 people died with COVID but were considered not to be "COVID deaths"
@CowperKettle Well, everyone's system is really - we're still in the "fog of war" stages
12:58
@ColleenV Same here, because the tests have poor specificity
Florida, USA , has relaxed the Stay at Home, to allow for some 'reduced' activity. WE are mostly split evenly on if it was done to soon.
An order was issued a couple of weeks ago to consider all persons who present with severe lung symptoms as COVID sufferers by default, no matter what their test results are
Yeah, politicians have an incentive to make things look as bad as possible
But it is also the case that the tests we have suck
Empty beaches all across the state during spring break is haunting.
In Russia, the contrary. The free press is peppered with scandals in which officials were hushing up outbreaks
13:00
so what do you do?
For some reason, officials in Russia have been downplaying the epidemic.
@CowperKettle That's interesting. I guess the incentives are different in Russia
Here, we have an election coming up and the federal government is handing out money to help with COVID outbreaks
So if you are the governor of a state you want to make sure you get the attention and money from the COVID outbreaks
Thus far, three senior (in terms of their posision) doctors have committed suicides in Russia. In two of the cases it was due to their protest to convert their hospitals to COVID hospitals.
and look like you are "doing something" about it
@CowperKettle That's terrible. It is heartbreaking that they felt that was the only way to have their voice heard.
13:03
Or are we thinking they were "suicides" ?
Several years ago, a set of instructions issued by the GOVT made it quite hard to use the word "suicide" in the press.
Ghosts of communist rule?
We have an agency called RosComNadzor that routinely closes websites for describing suicide cases.
@GWarner Yes, a kind of revival.
Officially it is done in order "not to provoke other people to commit suicide"
So many free media often use the word RosComNadzor instead of "suicide"
Such and such person "has committed [RosComNadzor]"
In order to mock Putin's regime
America has been cultivating it's 'punching bag of democracy' case study for generations.
@CowperKettle "Trump" is becoming a transliteration as well. Not because words or phrases are verboten but is easier on our soft minds.
I'm a procrastinator. When's the election? I need to wade thru mod responses still.
Note to self: Find a good text to speech program.
@CowperKettle I just read that article. It sounds like there is a defenstration epidemic in addition to the COVID pandemic. :( Three doctors in two weeks falling out of a window? Russian windows seem very dangerous.

Anyone else finding themselves wanting or actually editing Q and A on other SE sites because of poor use of English? Is this a bad thing?
@GWarner No, every site is intended to be a repository of knowledge. Using standard English and proper punctuation and such makes it easier for everyone to understand.
I feel vindicated, TY @ColleenV .
So I wonder if rescinding my edit on OPs vehement request takes back the points I earned.. I dont care, dont answer this.
@GWarner There is some text in the help center about how people should be prepared for others to edit their posts. People who don't really understand the model get upset sometimes. The best way to approach it IMO is to explain that you are trying to help their post get the attention and votes it deserves, not point out their mistakes.
Because that's really what you're doing - getting rid of distractions so the content of the post can shine.

user149432As an alternative to the other FAQ format being fleshed out here on Meta Stack Exchange, I'd like to propose something far more terse that covers the bare essential mechanics of being a moderator. Feel free to add more questions, but keep them short: this isn't the place to get into complex mod...

@ColleenV It was obvious even before the edit that the OP wasnt likely to follow anyone's guidelines beforehand. And took issue that someone else wanted to clarify their question/title.
So being new there my upvote I retracted was counted on the question. But the the downvote I added after I retracted my edit wasn't shown. And I explained all this to them. They didn't care.

I feel that Sarah Bowman's comment just outright ignored my linked Meta post. We have many meta posts that talk about low quality questions (= no effort, poorly structured, etc.) and discuss how we should encourage users to improve their questions.
Her comment may have come from: 1. the original question wasn't pithy. There have been one-liners that were allowed on the site. She may be thinking why single out this question as opposed to other shorter ones
2. Your first comment has multiple questions. That could be perceived as pretty strongly worded. The OP is totally overreacting, but I think if you'd posted a shorter comment with some grammar information/link to another related post, Sarah Bowman wouldn't have chimed in
