@AIQ If it's a question about English, ask it on the main site. If it's site-related, post it on the meta site. You don't have to include your motivation for asking the question; you can simply ask it as you would any other question. You seem to have identified a couple of alternatives you're not certain about, and I'd therefore suggest you merely list them as such.

Further, I don't know if it's a good idea to influence potential answerers by saying person X told you x is the correct option while Y told you only y works in some context.

Don't worry about having your question closed/downvoted. If it happens, it happens. You're not in danger of having your account suspended because of it, and you're not spamming the site with bad questions.
