Oh shoot... I wrote an answer after doing a fair bit of research, and I just found out from JavaLatte's answer that one part of my answer is wrong. Prepositional phrases can modify either a noun/noun phrase or the subject of the verb - I knew this. But I did not know it can't modify pronouns (her/him).
I still don't know why that is the case. I can't find the rule anywhere ...
