Can I use employees thus? The Bioassay Unit is not the employer, these workers/engineers etc are members of this Unit. So I'm unsure if I can use employees here.

My Aunt called up to ask me where my cousin was in the race.(She couldn't come to see it). The race was still going on so I tell her his current position, so what should I use:
He's first/second/last(or ant other position).
Or
He's coming in last(any position)
And in AmE is "position"...
@CowperKettle I wonder if “members of the unit” might be better. I think the sentence might need some rearranging though. The document is describing how the unit members correctly adhered to standard operating procedures, or it is a document for them describing how to implement the SOP?
