@SamBC when I was in school I would take notes but never look at them after. I found that making stuff visual made it easier to learn. I wonder if my doodles count as gestures...

I take notes when I study and only rarely refer back to them. I find it just helps me concentrate on the text at hand. I'd assume the same holds for doodles. You have to think about the thing you're drawing and that helps you memorize it or such.
What I really like is straight up writing questions and organizing those into groups. This sort of meta overhead helps put things into perspective.
Then I learn how many important items or points there are per question, and 18 hours later, I can recount 40 pages no problem.
And the only thing that's worth keeping are the papers with questions.

One of my many hats is as an educationalist of sorts, and I'm a big fan of the idea that engaging as many modes of thinking when you learn makes the learning work better.

Am I right?
But "Jalil saying that ..." is just an action.
Oh sorry I think my understanding of the meaning of the sentence is wrong.

@Man_From_India I would expect “Mariam could not picture...” and it would mean “couldn’t imagine”
Mariam couldn’t picture Jalil saying her face was long, even though it is... It wouldn’t be like him to be so mean.
If the meaning was that Mariam didn’t see her face as long, even though other people agreed it was, I might say “Mariam did not picture her face as long, even though Jalil like to tell everyone it was.”
