I take notes when I study and only rarely refer back to them. I find it just helps me concentrate on the text at hand. I'd assume the same holds for doodles. You have to think about the thing you're drawing and that helps you memorize it or such.
What I really like is straight up writing questions and organizing those into groups. This sort of meta overhead helps put things into perspective.
Then I learn how many important items or points there are per question, and 18 hours later, I can recount 40 pages no problem.
And the only thing that's worth keeping are the papers with questions.
