The only confusing thing in that article is the use of "decrease towards random levels" and "increase away from near-randomness towards a plateau".

Er, passage.

But it's still fairly understandable. You can replace "decrease" and "increase" with "go".

It looks like they have assigned a low value to "random". If that's the case, or if these are domain-specific uses of those verbs, the passage makes even more sense.

But it doesn't look like the authors are native speakers of English, so I wouldn't imitate their word choice.

Also, I find myself plunging into recursions of various depths and that's scaring me a little.

From that passage we don't find out what those terms mean.

Scientific analysis of psychiatric illnesses is interesting, but I'm too dense.

@CowperKettle Thanks! @JasperLoy Yes, indeed I use those too, the more the merrier, even the OED1 on archive, Century and all, I especially like the paper Micro which I've seen only once in this lifetime and that was really memorable. I think you discussed it at some point because I searched for "compact" in the room and you referred the compact version of the dictionary if I remember right. Anyways, cheers!
