@Lawrence I've read the linked study, and I believe I understand the distinction, but your answer doesn't make clear the difference between the so-called "zero article" and the indefinite article, which is what I'm asking about.
However, I think the classification presented is flawed because you cannot append these determinatives, or whatever you wanna call them, to all NPs in all situations; i.e., it contrasts different determinatives on different levels.
Anyway, the study says you can paraphrase lunch in People should never go without (Ø1) lunch, some lunch in Did you have some lunch?, and a lunch in It was a lunch of uncommon quality as a meal. What can I learn from this?
