Q: Why is R "ar" instead of "er"?

Carlos Arturo SerranoIn the names of letters, the e is predominant: ef, em, el, es. Why is R different? Why ar instead of er?

I used to argue that questions like this were off-topic, but the community support for that position always seemed weak at best.

I do see three close votes, although I'm not really sure why any of those particular reasons were chosen. It isn't completely answerable with a dictionary, it's difficult to add any useful research if you don't know where to look, and it's not a matter of opinion.
You're the linguist :) I know there's been some chatter in the past about closing questions that are too much in the world of linguistics... but I wouldn't know the difference.
I guess the question (to me, anyway) is, to an English learner does it really matter?

I would still encourage people to ask these questions on EL&U rather than ELL if they asked me.

I don't think they help too much with learning a language. I guess that you could see the pattern, and maybe it could help you remember a little better.
I would agree. I think the experts there are better able to explain it ... not that we don't have experts... but it doesn't seem like a good fit.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Thank you. :-)

@snailboat do you often read transcripts of old chats? I never do, but for some reason, I tried it yesterday
It felt good

Oh, I see the research close vote is morphing into a "I don't like this question" close reason

@snailboat The reason a lot of learners don’t though is because they aren’t exactly warmly welcomed on ELU. There is a certain contingent that believe every question by a learner belongs on ELL regardless of its content
@Catija I don’t think it’s a good idea to try to decide for someone else whether or not they need to know something. If it’s in our scope it should be fair game, regardless of its perceived usefulness. I think the “why” questions are all a bit of a gray area though. Some of the whys help with understanding English and some don’t but it’s hard for a learner to know that ahead of time.
@ColleenV There's a reason I avoid that site at all costs.
14:08
among many other reasons...
@ColleenV that's what I tried to fight in my meta shenanigans
But nooooo, mister ELL can ask all the crap he wants
@Catija it doesn't welcome hippo dolls too?

@ColleenV Well, in this case I wrote an answer, which is basically the equivalent of changing my position to "It's on-topic here!" :-)

I don't think I've pushed for etymology questions to be off-topic in a long time now.
I don't think I've pushed for anything to be anything in a long time now
I miss the bloodshed
And an annoying apathetic meta
