Wow.
I'm alone in chat.

Hi @DamkerngT.! Do you happen to know why there's an h in Thai?
This question occurred to me yesterday when I told a bunch of people that Thai is not pronounced like thigh, and they were all surprised.

3 hours later…
06:24
Is it pronounced with a hard t?
Interesting
Not very hard, but not F either.
> Thaw a cryovial from the studied cell bank (MCB, WCB or PPCB) and inoculate the contents into complete culture medium.
I don't know whether to use an article here... articles kill me.
> Thaw a cryovial from the studied cell bank (MCB, WCB or PPCB) and inoculate the contents into a/the complete culture medium.
I think it needs some article..
06:37
> If necessary, passage the cells into a larger volume.
I wonder if I can avoid the word 'container'. In Russian it is possible.
Anonymous
Is passage a verb?
Anonymous
@Færd It indicates an aspirated t.
Anonymous
In Thai aspiration is phonemic, so t and th are two different phonemes. Typing from my phone so I can't use the proper symbols.
@snailplane yes, like in "cell passaging" (transferring some cells into another tube/flask/vial)
good morning/midnight!
I took this magical pill at a standard dose and have been feeling like I'll lose consciousness for 3 hours. O_O Lost 3 hours of translation.
Sawasdee khrap, @DamkerngT.!
Sawasdee khrap!
@Færd Because we follow IPA, or a similar system, I think. Thai has two kinds of "t"s, i.e., the aspirated /th/, and the unaspirated /t/. (And of course, we have /d/ as well.)
Ah! @snailplane already explained that!
06:52
> To feel or see the difference between aspirated and unaspirated sounds, one can put a hand or a lit candle in front of one's mouth, and say spin [spɪn] and then pin [pʰɪn]. One should either feel a puff of air or see a flicker of the candle flame with pin that one does not get with spin.
Preaspiration? Hard to imagine.
> In phonetics, preaspiration (sometimes spelled pre-aspiration)[1] is a period of voicelessness or aspiration preceding the closure of a voiceless obstruent,[2] basically equivalent to an [h]-like sound preceding the obstruent. In other words, when an obstruent is preaspirated, the glottis is opened for some time before the obstruent closure.[3]
Good Sunday morning!
Good morning!

Mild winter has started.
We shall have short rains next week. O_O
And we today.
07:04
@CowperKettle Ah! Russian has no unaspirated /t/ either?
@DamkerngT. I think it does have the unaspirated /t/
We have the word stop in Russian so it must be unaspirated
I see. But it's not phonemic, perhaps, then.
I don't know..
But you'd better spurn reading it cause it's in Russian
07:11

@CowperKettle Another thing you can do is hold a thin sheet of paper (or a receipt or such) in front of your mouth.

When the vocal cords vibrate, it slows down the air passing through.
Anonymous
When you have "aspiration", or a puff of air, there's a period of time before the vocal cords begin to vibrate, and during that time, the air is moving much faster.
@snailplane i.e. before the chords begin to vibrate in order to produce the next sound? Now I get it
> On the next day, spin down the cells and extract plasmid DNA using a commercially-available kit. (I have the urge of placing these commas there; it's easier to read in my view)

@snailplane can you hep me at?:

A: Why next tag badge needs a colon, but regular badge doesn't?

PandyaMay be because it has more than one line/topic to say. For Next badge, it has only one line information e.g. 247/300, Civic Duty. But for Next tag badge it has multiple line information e.g 3/100 score, 1/20 answers, tags. So, When it refers to more than one or say multiple lines o...

@Pandya I'm not aware of such a rule.

A: in presence of vs in the presence of

Maulik VBoth are possible. The sentence without the would imply to elders in general. Putting the would specify those elders. So, if you are talking about the manners, we should show respect in presence of any elder. In that way, I'd not use the definite articles at both the places. Consider these exam...

I think Maulik ji missed the point of the question a bit. The question was about the first of the two thes
I now have the same question and Maulik's answer puzzles me. Maybe I should reread it carefully.
@CowperKettle ^_^
I have already posted my comment over there. :)
I'd say we need the there in the OP's example.
@Pandya I think it's just a case of inconsistency in the UI.
@DamkerngT. I set up a bounty to see more answers..
@CowperKettle Aww... I missed that message. Hope you're fine now.
@CowperKettle Nice!
Luckily I have many points and can give out bounties left and right while I'm translating..
12:26
Hehe!
@DamkerngT. Yes, much better! (0:
Yay!
@snailplane That's good news! Sorry to hear about the flood, though. Sounds like it's a major one this time.
(I missed a lot of messages in our chat lately, apparently.)
> to cultivate a cell line carrying a viral genotype VIe replicon in the presence of different concentrations of chemical compounds provided by the company
This is my sentence.
I was not sure about the there
"Beijing has historically been more reluctant to impose sanctions on North Korea than other world powers because it is concerned about a power vacuum on its southern border if the regime is allowed to fail." Does this mean that South Korea will come into power if the regime of Best Korea fails?
Rather, "try to come into power"?
No, the sentence only speaks about "power vacuum".

Q: in presence of vs in the presence of

mystery "in presence of" vs "in the presence of" Should we use "in presence of" or "in the presence of" in the following sentence? "We should show more respect in the presence of the elders." "We should show more respect in presence of the elders."

@CowperKettle I take it as something that attracts power.
Are they talking about North Korea as a whole as a power vacuum on China's southern border?
@userr2684291 I wonder that, too.
I'd say it's probably not technically correct to say North Korea is on China's southern border.
Exactly.
@DamkerngT. eastern?
@CowperKettle I'd say, yes.
12:42
Exactly why I dismissed that idea in the first place.
@DamkerngT. by mind map was very distorted. I rarely look at the map of China. (0:
But maybe it somehow is, and that's all the article is trying to convey.
But that location is very strategic.
@DamkerngT. Russia had a city in Korea
12:45
The Battle of Port Arthur (Japanese: 旅順口海戦, Hepburn: Ryojunkō Kaisen) of 8–9 February 1904 (Monday February 8 – Tuesday February 9) marked the commencement of the Russo-Japanese War. It began with a surprise night attack by a squadron of Japanese destroyers on the Russian fleet anchored at Port Arthur, Manchuria, and continued with an engagement of major surface combatants the following morning; further skirmishing off Port Arthur would continue until May 1904. The battle itself ended inconclusively, though the war itself ended in a decisive Japanese victory. == Background == The opening stage...
See, it's not very far to get to Beijing from the sea if S. Korea and Japan give a green light to someone.
oops, that was not in Korea
Imagine a whole Korea like South Korea! We'll be swimming in cars and microwave ovens.
This should be prevented at any cost (0:

@DamkerngT. Would my original interpretation be OK?
and 1000 more installments of Running Man
@CowperKettle With giant TV screens bombarding us with ads continuously, even.
@userr2684291 I think so.
Wait! Which is the original interpretation?
12:50
That South Korea wants to encroach on Best Korea's territory.
I think the implication after the vacuum is intentionally left to be ambiguous.
So, unless the news or the article explicitly says so, it might be one step too far, according to the text.
@CowperKettle That the is fine, IMO.
13:16
@DamkerngT. thank you!
> 1 tube, 10 µmol equal 8.7 mg (a record in a table cell)
> 1 tube, 10 µmol equals 8.7 mg
I think that both are acceptable. "an amount of 10 micromol equals to an amount of 8.7 mg"
Yeah, I think it's like N dollars is/are ...
I like equals better, personally.
13:19
Me too
Because it assumes the amount as a "parcel", a whole thing, which it is.
Word of the day: power vacuum
I didn't realize it's an actual term.
I thought they made it up for the article's purposes.

@DamkerngT. Thankz

A cute flip!
@userr2684291 I'm more familiar with political vacuum, but the two terms are pretty similar.

@DamkerngT. hmm, what are their differences? I know that power vacuum is prolly the thingy that lead to IS being born
Power (vacuum) covers a wider range of forms of power, I think.
> Former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt early Sunday mocked President Trump after Trump pointed to an incident “last night” in Sweden to defend his travel ban.

“Sweden? Terror attack? What has he been smoking? Questions abound,” Bildt tweeted.
@CowperKettle the only thing I don't like about the four years of the current POTUS's presidency is we'll get used to mocking him
14:54
BREAKING NEWS. Swedish police have released picture of the man sought for the terror attack #lastnightinsweden… https://twitter.com/i/web/status/833268073419403264

@snailplane Thanks.

@Pandya As pointed out in the comments, your answer doesn't really make sense. There is no rule saying there should be a colon in one spot but not the other. It's just an inconsistency in the text on the site.
@snailplane ok. I'm deleting my answer. Thanks.

> STATEMENT OF WORK
for research to be conducted under the title:
"Determination of the specific activity of a number of pilot antiviral chemical compounds developed by CompanyName"
I wonder if "Statement of Work" is the right phrase.
Maybe it's "Requirements Specification"?
I've translated this document that describes what is to be done: goals and steps to achieve them, and the deadlines. Signatures at the end.
I'm not sure about the title though
This document is an Appendix to a Contract.
The contract is already signed. So the statement is quite firm.
19:23
Found another expression: Terms of Reference
But it looks so unlike the Russian техническое задание
19:42
I think statement of work is fine.
20:24
@CowperKettle requirements specification

I tried EL&U home page for a change, and look at the first question I found:

Q: What's an elegant single word for "A new beginning" or "Fresh start"

user221216What's an elegant single word for "a new beginning" or "a fresh start"? A good example would be a ceo of a company just filed chapter 11, writes in an email We are looking to restructure our company … Looking forward for a ________ with our enterprise transformed into a cutting edge hi-tec...

It's a SWR again!
(FWIW, a new chapter sounds much better than the renaissance.)
