The goal is to type what you want with the least amount of effort possible.

If it were designed to let you enter words it doesn't know just a little bit more easily, it'd be nice :-) Autocorrect has a small vocabulary.

There you go again, my haunted keyboard.

A page from a translators' textbook used in the Ural Federal University. Count the errors there! (0:
It's not a text for proofreading, it's just an ordinary text for translation. It's amazing. (0:

It's Cambridge's Academic Book Week! acbookweek.com You can read some interesting stuff for free!

You can read stuff for free on other weeks too. (0:
@Stephie "Snowmen time is later, though: Jan./Feb. And sometimes March, when you are so darn fed up with the stuff and are dying for spring." --- How do I envy you.
I'll go jogging in the snow now, in the park. It's 18:30, it's dark, it's minus 10C, and I am already fed up with the snow and the darkness.
@CopperKettle B...But not as interesting!

Hi all. could someone please tell me if "Genial" is common in daily conversation?

Some people say genial, but I really don't think it's very common in daily conversation.
I'm not a native speaker, but "genial" does not seem like an antiquated word to me. In purely statistical terms, it might be quite rare though.
@GATA Daily... no. Not in the US, anyway. I'm aware of it but I wouldn't ever use it.
We rarely mention “genial”
But this is rather venial. (0:
At least in my opinial.

My mom cannot produce a [ɾ].
Would most non-natives pronounce /t/ as [t] in all scenarios?
18:59
@Nihilist_Frost Definitely not.

It's hard to generalize about non-native pronunciation because L2 speakers are integrating English phonetics and phonology into their established L1 system, and the results depend not only on what that L1 is, but how they learn and how they're taught—not to mention any aptitude they might have and the age they started at
Yeah, my point too. There's no all in human languages.
@Snail @Dam Yesterday I saw a nice meta post that was a bit related to the situation we face in 'will future reference' question.

Q: "Spam Voting" - Should we stop it?

Zizouz212I've had a few concerns over a new form of "spam" - that is, through voting. A while back, I had seen some wild reputation increases to my account, amongst others, that seemingly felt weird - as I've barely participated in asking questions or providing answers. Earlier today, this sentiment was...

This is definitely a problem, and a worse one than serial voting IMO. Other than revenge downvoting and sock puppetry (which are relatively rare), [unintentional] serial upvoting comes from a pour soul who appreciates what good deed someone else has done on the site, but doesn't know how to be thankful properly. While random post upvoting usually comes and bites you when you're proving that an answer is wrong. — Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. 20 hours ago

Japanese.SE only got 3 moderator candidates, so I guess we're not having a real election . . .
Anonymous
But hey, at least we'll have 3 moderators instead of 2 :-)
Anonymous
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. I'm one of the more prolific voters on the sites where I participate, but even I never got anywhere close to voting on 100% of posts!
@snailboat Oh YAY! at least you're graduating! :D Congrats to you guys, even if your mod election is small.
@snailboat So that means I'm still gonna see you as blue, right?
Anonymous
@Catija Thanks! Yeah, they already got rid of the little 'beta' label. Actually, they did all the graduation things except the election at the exact same time as on ELL.
20:06
I learned that small and friendly is waaaay better than big and . . . unfriendly.
Anonymous
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. Yes! I think so.
Anonymous
Since there are only 3 candidates and there are 3 spots, I figure I'll have a hard time losing.
@snailboat Oh! Interesting. I guess I was so rapt in the ELL election I didn't notice!
Anonymous
@Catija ELL's election was exciting!
Anonymous
20:07
Well, it was exciting for me.
@snailboat Indeed. The only thing that would have made it more exciting was a few more candidates.
Anonymous
@Catija ELL was easily one of the most active betas out there, and it only got 10 candidates.
Well, unlike you guyses, I think there wasn't any real competition.
Anonymous
Japanese.SE is a smaller site, and we got 3!
Anonymous
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. J.R. certainly took first place by a landslide :-)
20:08
Chemection, on the other hand, only got 6 candidate who all looked awesome times awesome.
Anonymous
I was pretty sure J.R. would get elected, but I didn't know about the other slots.
Anonymous
I thought we had a number of good candidates.
I was suspecting the outcome of the other results.
@snailboat I think M&TV actually managed to get more than ten but a lot of them were very low-rep users.
Anyway, beating a dead horse . . .
Anonymous
20:09
@Catija I thought we'd get more candidates on Japanese.SE!
Anonymous
I wanted people to have a chance to end my reign of terror by voting me out :-)
I wonder how people there think of you.
:)
Is Japanese chat active?
@snailboat HA HA! Nice. I seriously doubt you'd get dethroned, though. :D I can't imagine people not liking you.
Anonymous
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. Relatively!
Who's this snailboat mod? They gave minus to my queschenz! (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻

Well, I'm usually the one who puts my name on things like suspensions and moderator messages and such. Certainly not everyone is happy with me!
Y MODERATOR CLOSES MY QUESTION?
Anonymous
Yeah, people occasionally get very upset over questions being closed.
Anonymous
Or worse—about comments being deleted! What kind of barbaric dictator would delete a comment!?
How many socks do you catch every week?
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. Y U NO READ HELP PAGES???!!@!
@snailboat Ha, I just flagged a chain of comments on M&TV to have them deleted because they're getting a bit over the top.
Anonymous
20:14
Also, people want moderators to end downvoting.
Anonymous
There are users that flag their own posts every time they get a downvote asking moderators to take a look.
@snailboat What, like this guy:
Whoever dared to downvote this, learn English. There's a record of votes, y'know. — HostileFork yesterday
I made a snarky comment about him living up to his username but then I deleted it... and edited his answer.
Anonymous
I think the right approach there is not to countersnark, but to flag as 'not constructive'.
Anonymous
@Catija That was a good edit!
20:17
Whoever dared not star my chat messages, learn chatting. ಠ_ಠ
@snailboat I did flag with a custom comment.
Anonymous
Oh, I see. I chose 'not constructive'.
Anonymous
So unless your flag has been declined already, there are now at least two flags on that comment.
It was just 15 minutes ago, so it's still pending.
@snailboat gone.

A: What is this called in English? paper / sheets/ blank page (picture is attached)

jmorenoThere isn't a single word for this unless you exclude "paper" from the count. But both "lined paper" and "notebook paper" should be understood to mean this type of paper. Without the lines, it is is typically called "blank paper" or "copy paper" (used to be "typewriter paper", but I doubt it is...

Anonymous
I voted this answer up because of 'notebook paper', which is what I'd probably call it.
Anonymous
I linked it because they said the unlined type used to be 'typewriter paper', which is interesting to me.
Anonymous
When I was little, we called it 'printer paper'! :-)
Anonymous
I imagine there are lots of technical terms for kinds of paper, though.
@snailboat Yeah, and the answer came in before HostileFork's answer.

K, /me hitting the realm of the horizontal people. Night!
Anonymous
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. Rest well, horizontal Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ.!
Sure! All to do with the size of the sheet, the width/placement of the lines etc.
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. Night!
And I'm off to class. Fun to chat. :D
Anonymous
Have a good class!

I just got a notification that the Music.SE election is beginning. They're graduating lots of betas right now!
