Paul-Michel Foucault (UK: FOO-koh, US: foo-KOH, French: [pɔl miʃɛl fuko]; 15 October 1926 – 25 June 1984), generally known as Michel Foucault, was a French philosopher, historian of ideas, social theorist and literary critic. Foucault's theories primarily address the relationship between power and knowledge, and how they are used as a form of social control through societal institutions. Though often cited as a post-structuralist and postmodernist, Foucault rejected these labels. His thought has influenced academics, especially those working in communication studies, anthropology, sociology,...
I'm not well-versed in philosophy, not even so much as gauging the fairness of his claims.
The only thing I know is too much of any -ism deviates from fair and impartial judgments about life and death and whatnot.
And since the statement above also fits at least a few -isms, even that shouldn't be taken without a grain of anion and cation aggregates
10:48
But boy do I enjoy his writing
^ The punchline was missing
@EddieKal Also note that what I linked was probably at least 15 years old, and he might have changed his stance ever since.
@AIQ HELLOOOOOO Hellooooo helloooo hellooo
ECHOOOO Echoooo echoo echo

24 years.
@Sristy Writing, not just reading.
It's much too easy for reading to fall into an idle mode.
I don't remember 95% of the new words I've encountered, and I haven't even read much
Of course, it would make a difference what you're reading.
But I only ever saw what I need to improve and the drive to do so when I had to write something.
There's also the fact that for almost every learner, whenever they doubt whether they can do something, most of the inability is perceived.
And ironically, when we're too sure of ourselves we tend to fall short of our own expectations, at least.
Does that count as irony because I'm too drowsy to know.
@AIQ it's vaguely familiar
Oh, 2017. Nope
11:35
I asked an 18-year-old American whether they knew what deli stands for. They have never seen the word delicatessen. They knew what a gap year is.
OK.
Alright, I've trimmed the hedge surrounding the answer at issue.

@M.A.R. I tend to read with a highlighter. I don’t necessarily want to stop reading each time there’s something I don’t know, but if I highlight them I can easily review later if I want to.

Also, I would suggest talking. You need to communicate with others to learn a language.
13:56
@M.A.R. He calls Foucault Mike? Why would he anglicize Foucault's name? I am pretty sure he wouldn't do that.
@M.A.R. Yeah the header is dated 1995, so 24 years ago. I understand where Chomsky was coming from in that piece, but some -isms are -isms exactly because mainstream society refuse to accept them and try to provincialize them. Isn't feminism a good example? We still live in a world where people debate if we need feminism.
14:26
@userr2684291 Thank you, will you publish your findings in Nature?
@EddieKal Shrug
Maybe Foucault asked him he preferred this nick?
@M.A.R. lol nice thought
They were not really on familiar terms
they only met once or twice
@EddieKal well, in the practical sense of things, no -isms tend to remain moderate. I guess taking after scientific discovery and research, whenever a new term is introduced, so many nuances are added to the general umbrella of things it covers, until it immediately no longer looks like the initial proposal. That's okay, I guess, but the (shallow) picture I have of, say, self-proclaimed feminists doesn't remind me of gender equality at all
If anything, quite the opposite.
@EddieKal Well, enough for a few hours of talk at least I gather
My dream is to become so badass to have a one-hour talk with someone where they speak a wholly different language than mine
@M.A.R. that I agree. That also applies to a bunch of other things. Some self-proclaimed capitalists don't exactly epitomize the free market principle :P
Oh that one is a large can of worms I'm not willing to open!
I was going to say the same thing!
Lol I am going back to watching moviews
14:39
About capitalism I just find this amusing that our TV keeps bashing them but I guess our whole systems looks more like capitalist than anything else
oops I just coined a new word moview
@EddieKal Scorsese?
Yeah I am watching "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore"
@EddieKal it's felinese
@EddieKal Haven't seen that one
I am doing a movie marathon today. Let's see how many I can go through before the end of the day when they leave Netflix
14:42
Noooooooooooooooo
If there's any movie habit I don't like, it's marathons
I know! I hate them too

I had no strength for a marathon; I only did a 7 kilometer jog

@CowperKettle I can only run 1 km. Any tips?
@AIQ You are right. Maybe not
@AIQ Ordered Nihari today at an Indian restaurant! Very tasty!!

Wow Eddie Kal, that's great. I am glad you liked it. Yes, the potato paratha can rarely ever be found in restaurants.
@userr2684291 I had never heard of that word before it was posted here. I however am very familiar with "delicate" ;)
It's a German loanword related to "delicate" "delicacy"

I am listening to whole lotta love. It's a very old song. But I am just getting my blood flowing.
Eddie Kal what's for crazy today?
@AIQ What do you mean?

Darn I couldn't deliver! I was trying to see if that would work again.
As in "Any crazy plans tonight?"
I made that work. I asked someone here "What's for crazy tonight?" and they replied with their plan of doing some karaoke and then drinking to death with friends. When they asked me the same, I replied "Crazy can wait!" - I totally changed the meaning.
That actually crossed my mind. It makes sense. Well I am doing movies and games all day, so nothing special :)

Next person I speak to, I am asking "What's your crazy?" to mean "What kind of crazy things do you like to do?" lol
It's been raining all day.
Movies and games is special!
That's just a different kind of crazy!

I have a sentence that is bothering me. Can someone comment on this.
"Around 27 percent of the labour force engaged in natural resources, agriculture, and other production occupations in Prince Edward Island (PEI) receive regular benefits."
I want this to be read like this: "Around 27 percent of [the labour force engaged in natural resources, agriculture, and other production occupations in Prince Edward Island (PEI)] receive regular benefits."
The sentence seems to be ambiguous as it is now.
