Isn't the use of "blazing" and "dimly" together in the folowing sentence a contradition? "In the 1700s, writers began to use lurid to describe the red glow of fire blazing dimly within smoke." quoted from thefreedictionary.com/lurid for "blaze" means "To burn with a bright flame" while "dim" means "Lacking in brightness".
