I am 8 caps away from legendary ... ;[
in The 2nd Monitor, 2 days ago, by rolfl
pimping because almost 146
in The 2nd Monitor, 7 hours ago, by rolfl
I feel like pimping this - lot of effort, and question has low views... and I am close-ish to cap, which would be @148
I'm going to dig deeper, these were easy to find, and I don't even want to know how far this goes
this is really not cool, @rolfl
I really hope I don't need to explain why this is wrong on so many levels
but if you want, I can, just let me know
brainfart: s/going to dig deeper/NOT going to dig deeper/

4 hours later…
10:34 AM
Hmmm... so I pause and think....

10:53 AM
You will find that going all the way back to the first days I joined the site.
in The 2nd Monitor, Nov 28 '13 at 22:59, by rolfl
You did really well with the for-loop..... my rep is only 110 for the day.... If I can get 15 more today, then maybe I can hit 2K tomorrow .... 2K in 30 days.... plus a silver badge (unless someone gets me necromancer first).
The 2nd monitor has always been a place where people get exposure to questions they are interested in.
I have always subscribed to the fact that voting on posts is more closely related to views than anything else, and up or down voting is related to answer quality.
Stack exchange themselves promote this, with share links for twitter, facebook, etc., even tweeting posts themselves.
you get badges for sharing links.
the more people who read a post, the more people will vote, and possibly vote up.
So, on the one hand, people are encouraged to share links wherever they can, to promote their posts.
Now, I backed off a huge amount when I hit 20K.... I backed off answering as well.
it coincided with being appointed as mod.

11:27 AM
hey
pimping is kind of frowned upon for high rep users, isn't it
if I follow your logic, then all good answers should be pimped on the 2nd monitor
but that wouldn't be so good, would it
being close to 150 is not a good reason to pimp
"Legendary" is called that way for a reason\

So, I get "kind of frowned on", but not the "this is really not cool".
and the "why this is wrong on so many levels"....

given your position, as a mod
you set a precedence here
this should not be an example to follow

I see that too... give me a sec here.

incidentally, you also have the most rep at the moment

sorry, I got distracted by some flags and had not finished that ttrain of thought.

11:33 AM
it's really weird to see the top user pimping
sure

I have pimped a few times for myself (many times for others) since becoming a mod. Typically you will find those times by searching for *cough*
I have been "working" toward legendary, though, and that is fairly public. especially in the chat room.
I see your concern, and appreciate it. I'll stop as well, but I am trying to decide "how wrong" I wwas.

note that I opened this room, rather than flailing around in public

I know. I'm not upset with you or anything.
also, it is public... I'm not concerned about that.

for the last 2 days that you need, surely you don't really need to pimp. The truth is, you can get it whenever you really want it.

It's not advertised, but it is public.
I don't need to pimp, no. It is essentially inevitable that I will get it.

11:38 AM
that's the thing. you don't even need it, so why you do it.... it looks like greed, and impatience

It is impatience.
not greed...

I've been working for this too, you know, freaking hard

I have noticed that... trust me.

I've been many times frustrated for trying to cap and reaching it, and I really could have just pimped to reach it

You have twitter?
It is all about visibility....

11:41 AM
$ cat reputation.txt | grep 'rep +1[6-9][0-9]' | wc -l
29
reputation.txt is saved from /reputation page
these are all failed attempts to cap, reaching 160+, where just one pimp could have done the trick

I have had two conflicting goals recently
one of them is to not answer as much
This has had a big impact on my progress.
so, what I have done in the past few months, is dedicate some "big days" to answering.
I tend to pick more obscure questions, and hammer them out.
there's the occasionaly hot one, or topical one that happens though.
As a consequence, on those big days, I guess I have been sensitive to putting out many answers, some of them not viewed, and then pimped them.

this happens to everyone, not only to you

The past week has been a "final push" to get legendary..... I am going to be losing time in the next month or so... won't happen.
So, yes, I am impatient,.
I do see your concerns..... really. But, promoting posts is encouraged, but I can also see how it is also dubious for me.... even if it's OK for everyone else (including you)... ;-)
Also, another thing that nags at me is 0-score answers ... ;-)
I want to get some feedback on them...

I don't think it would be OK for me either

That was one of the posts you listed above
Still... I'll stop, but I am still not sure where you stand on this...

11:49 AM
and 0-score answers happen to me all the time

> ....why this is wrong on so many levels
it worries me that I have burned some sort of bridge beyond repair....

no, that would be ridiculous, it's just internet points
the levels are just what I already said above: being a mod; being at the top; setting a bad precedent

Huh, I am surprised by your 0-score answers: codereview.stackexchange.com/…

@rolfl you really don't know half of it

About that... I am encouraging everyone to vote for anything that deserves a vote.

11:53 AM
there are also the good answers that lost to inferior answers

I want people pimping their stuff. it is what will lead to graduation.

@rolfl I would have to pimp many of my posts, but I really think that would be distasteful for a high-rep user

I want people shouting from the rooftops that Code Review has a voting culture.

I encourage new members to pimp, to get them hooked
I pimp others who seem overlooked

I know, and you vote like crazy.

11:54 AM
self-pimping is very questionable for users above 20k

Point taken.
I can't undo that.

alright man, I said everything I wanted to say
2 more caps for you and you won't have dubious reasons to self-pimp anymore

Yeah, but expect some santa visits in the next bit. I need to get my voting stats up, it seems.

you've no idea, but I had really extremely frustrated times here

About the 2-more caps, that's why I feel particularly sheepish... because really, I should have had this conversation a week ago.

11:57 AM
even for someone coming from SO
I got used to it
if I put in 5 answers a day and I'm at 180 at 10pm before I go to bed, I accept that I might not get the missing votes

I get to see voting patterns as a mod.
I can see "troubling" relationships between people.
My voting stats in terms of given/received show a cluster of names that are familiar.
including yours.

hm

I can see overall %-of-vots-given type numbers.

did you notice that I voted on you less lately?

I can't see it as a timeline.
I have been answering less lately too.
also, I feel the voting culture in general is slipping.

12:02 PM
I'm not sure what you're trying to say with the voting patterns

All I am saying is that, it seems I vote for a lot of the same people often, and they vote for me.
I have been trying to vote more on people I don't know ;-)
that's not the rtight way of saying it...
I have been trying to read more answers and questions other than from what I see in the Java tag and in the chat room.
I have not seen many of your answers..... the java ones I have (and apart from today's stuff), I have voted on.

my votes are strongly influenced by my perceptions about the users

My viewing patterns are strongly influenced by users, but my voting I try to keep impartial.

there are a few users with poor attitude who I sometimes avoid voting on even if some answers would deserve
that period can expire naturally
sometimes they give a compellingly good answer I cannot resist and upvote anyway

I know users that make me feel that way too. There are some I 'avoid'.

12:07 PM
I'm pretty sure we have a name or 2 in common

Not sure about that... I tend to avoid certain people who ask questions
I'm tired of their demanding attitudes ;-0
Oh, the other thing, whil I am at it, is about the only stuff od mine I have pimped other than recently, has been on stack overflow and meta.se, not here
Sorry, jsut sayin... I got a gold great-answer through generating exposure.
Also, just being in the chat room is a good way to get exposure.

off-site makes it different, and a lot less bad

upvoted a long time ago btw ;-)
I wanted to be the first to get Legendary btw
I even changed my next badge target on my profile hoping that you might overlook

I have many motivations to get legendary....
@janos You're a ways off, though, right?
123 or so.

12:14 PM
23 days to go
this month alone I did 8 already
so 23 doesn't seem way off to me

cat reputation.txt | grep 'rep +1[6-9][0-9]' | wc -l
solarium:~/workspace/CRJunk/input> cat reputation.txt | grep 'rep +1[6-9][0-9]' | wc -l

a lot more of your answers went viral
sure, you have many Great answers, but I think so do I

I can tell you that every time I reached 160+, I decidedly wanted to cap on that day, and I was very disappointed to have failed despite my best efforts

It's a somewhat complicated table of how the stats for site badges line up.

12:18 PM
I don't know if you really tried to cap on those days when you almost reached. But I actually really did

I know that feeling.... for sure.
I have some tricks that help other than pimping, if you want to know.
there's three things I do....

sure, do tell!

1. I remember that Illuminator is a badge - you are encouraged to edit questions that you have answered.

I guess twitter is one of them. Makes sense. I should totally do that

2. I remember that good answers should have no typo's, and mathjax is always useful.
3. tags... always check the tags.

12:21 PM
I'm so much into badges

that way you can bump questions visibility and do good at the same time.

Legendary is an exception

I am driven by badges, I confess.

oh I see, it's really about bumping

yup.
of course, I tend to spend about an hour on an answer... so, at 2-hours-before-deadline, jsut before dinner for me, you can often see me cranking out another answer.

12:23 PM
I do these 3 things already, except #2, I don't go in for a typo alone, but typo + markdown fix is OK

Here's a case in point.....

I'm mainly driven by Legendary, and the strategy is simple: keep answering until you cap

if you capped and have extra time, write up answers to old questions and post tomorrow

I tend not to answer more if I am at/close to cap...
answers are time-consuming for me.
I almost need the cap on some days to prevent me spending too much time on site.

12:26 PM
@rolfl I had too much frustration about almost capping. I take no chances anymore, I hate to be disappointed

4 or 5 answers per day is my typical limit... I know that's not-so-modest, but that's normally all it takes. I try to make them as insightful as I can, though

@rolfl me too, with very rare low hanging fruit exceptions

It's been good, I have to run.

@rolfl it happened more than once that 8 was not enough for me (weekend)

garbage truck about to skip my house... got to get it out.

12:28 PM
I have to work too. See ya

12:44 PM
Holy crap, your reputation page.
You have been going at it hard since you got the new job.....
