Q: Heaviest loss of last four team remaining in history of World Cup

alamootBrazil just lost 1-7 to Germany in 2014 World Cup. What is the biggest loss ever among the top 4 teams in a world cup (that is biggest lost in the semifinals, 3rd place match or the final match)? Did this game have the biggest margin of victory? What game had the most goals?

01:07
@Seth would be the first time a European team won a world cup in the America

Q: Why does Ice Hockey have 3 periods?

OrgeIt’s obvious why most sports would have an even number of periods of play. It keeps everything fair as each team has the same amount of time on each end. So why in Ice Hockey are there 3 periods? It seems to create an opportunity of an unfair advantage for one team on purpose.

Q: Does FIFA have contingencies for riots during or after a match that make the winner incapable of continuing the tournament?

Nate KerkhofsDuring the monumental defeat of Brazil yesterday, some people jokingly said on Twitter that Holland and Argentina should hope that the Brazil fans storm the field and lynch both teams (their own team for disappointing them so much and the Germans for revenge). Of course this would never happen be...

Q: Why does the US Open have a tiebreaker for the fifth set?

pacoverflowThe Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon do not use a tiebreaker in the fifth set for men and third set for women. They play that final set until someone gets a 2-game lead, no matter how many games are required. But the US Open still uses a tiebreaker in the fifth set for men and third ...

Q: Any statistics that are no longer used?

pacoverflowIn 1980, Major League Baseball started keeping track of a statistic called the game winning RBI. But due to controversy, they stopped keeping track of it after 1988. Are there any other statistics in any sport that were used at one point but are no longer used for whatever reason?

Q: Is World XI a full member of ICC

Ibrahim UmerIs World XI team a full member of ICC like Australia, South Africa? Is its match considered international or domestic? Would the wickets,catches,runs etc scored by a player in World XI team be included in its international career or not?

@all Will we be doing some sort of live commenting?
19:45
@JacobJanTuinstra And/or posting gifs, tweets, etc.
@MichaelMyers as the match evolves? Man, that's undoable.
I don't have Twitter.......and not planning on getting that
@JacobJanTuinstra You don't have to have it to watch it
@MichaelMyers Yeah, you're right...

20:26

Collision between two players
30 minutes passt
@JacobJanTuinstra Anyone substituted?
@MichaelMyers No
FIFA's concussion protocols, step one: "Do you have a concussion? No? Good."
Offside
No card for ARG against Sneijder.....
Free kick Sneijder
20:45
What, do you think it's too quiet in here @MichaelMyers?
@hichris123 It's called marketing
I don't know how it works, but I know it's a thing.
Oh my god. Talking about the world cup in the Sports chatroom? Novel idea. =)
It was more fun yesterday, I'll admit
Halftime, 0-0
Only three shots total, and only one Argentinian shot on target
21:27
Still no score at 68'. Still no shots on target for Netherlands
@MichaelMyers It's eating me.....
Free kck Messie was messy
Again, offside for Van Persie.

Q: How many times two teams from the same continent have played the World Cup Final game?

alamootThere is a chance that Germany and the Netherlands will play for 2014 World cup, so here is a related question. the How many times two teams from the same continent have played the World Cup Final game? Please provide the year of tournament and the countries playing the final game, also indicate ...

Remember when Tim Howard made a zillion saves in a 0-0 game? This isn't that 0-0 game.
Robben but near to misss.......
OT
So how does OT work?
11
A: FIFA World Cup 2014 overtime

posdefThere is no sudden death in football, overtime (OT), or extra time (not to be confused with stoppage/additional time) as it's called in soccer context, is played in two halves 2 x 15 mins. FIFA tried the sudden death concept several years back, it was called Golden Goal. The idea was that the...

21:56
Wonder if the Dutch are saving their last substitution for Krul again
Nope. RvP comes out for Huntelaar
22:17
Second half OT started
22:33
penalties
dying overhere
So... what happens if it's still a tie?
Ah.
> At the end of OT if the score is still tied, teams move on to penalty shoot-outs. Notice that this means that in OT each team can score multiple goals!
Netherlands will go first, which is a sizable advantage
aaaaand it's gone
Messi nets his and it's 0-1
Sneijder misses and it looks very bad for the Dutch
3-1... yeah...
22:44
This is for all the marbles
It's in and Argentina wins 4-2
Wow.
I must admit I didn't expect that.
Nope, neither did I.
@hichris123 My understanding (and I might not be correct) is that they have extra time + 5 minutes (in a tie) at the end of the game and then they had 30 minutes and then penalty kicks.
Your World Cup final: Germany vs Argentina on Sunday
22:50
Bets are on Germany, but I'm rooting for Argentina ;)
@Seth 45 minutes, stoppage time, halftime, 45 more minutes, stoppage time. If necessary: break, 15 minutes, stoppage time, halftime, 15 more minutes, stoppage time, break, penalties
@MichaelMyers Wow, much more complicated than I thought ;P
stoppage time is just because the clock never stops right?
and injuries etc waste time?
Yes, and it doesn't really have much relation to how long the clock is actually stopped. It's usually 1 to 5 minutes regardless.
(and yes, there's usually more time if the home team is behind)
Huh.
As if Sundays at the Vatican weren't already awkward enough with the former German pope still there with the new Argentinian one. #WorldCup
had to laugh at that lol.
23:18
@Seth Is now the time where we mention no Euro team has won in the Americas?
@waxeagle Really? Interesting.. Gotta be a first for everything though.
I heard Argentina has played Germany 3 times for the World Cup now (or this is the third time.. either way)
All square at 1-1, Germany over Argentina in Rome, and Argentina over Germany in Mexico
both of those were back in the Maradona days, the 90 and 86 cups respectively
