Place two 1's, two 2's, ..., two n's into 2n+1 cells(one would be left empty), s.t. between each pair of same number k is k cell, e.g. n=1, solution is [1,empty,1].
I solved n=20 but took like a month
04:22
for n=4k+3 and n=4k, one solution is to append an empty cell to the Langford sequence
I think I found a pattern that works
20 18 16 14 12 10 8 6 4 2 0 19 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16 18 20 17 15 13 11 9 7 5 3 1 19 1 3 5 7 9 11 13 15 17
05:03
It's a counting problem, with [a,b,c,d]=[d,c,b,a] and [0,a,b,c]=[0,c,b,a] equivalent.
oh.
couldn't access the link
05:26
sounds like a very hard problem, count of Langford pairings alone grows pretty rapidly
06:05
@NewPosts got my score down slightly to 31953
06:27
It's been far too long on this site :P
oh nice
i dunno why but i would never have assumed you were here before i was :P but i'm only on 6y10m
Tbf, I do sort of remember us "arriving" around the same time
yeah two months is hardly a lot of time
it's really difficult to find out but were you maybe active in tnb later?
Yeah, I had really spotty activity early on
(especially because i can't remember what you went by before caird :P)
@cairdcoinheringaahing yeah that's probably it then
06:36
Plus a couple of (stupid) suspensions for vote fraud early on :P
Basically didn't use TNB until 6 months in
but now you've got a diamond
And get to find out who's doing voter fraud :P
damn lyxal and the entire site being his sockpuppets :P
Dammit Discord
lol
god it really is weird seeing the diamonds on the people they're on right now and not on the people they used to be on
i see wheat wizard ◆ and all i can think about is that stupid giraffe, i see hyper ◆ and wonder where benzene is
06:44
@totallyhuman I still have to double-take whenever I see the mod indicator "flag viewed by Dennis/Martin/Alex", cause it shows all mods who have viewed any flags on a post
i see caird ◆ and i think "damn that's a long way from what i remember of caird" :P
@totallyhuman I'm almost scared to ask :P
i mean i sorta just remember you and people like me, christopher, zachary, mendeleev as the "troublemakers" if that makes sense
getting messages trashed and kicked and suspended and stuff
Oh yeah, that's fair
Back when TNB was much more lawless :P
obviously we're now over half a decade older
i dunno about more lawless
but it's hard to gauge with the difference in activity
but feels a lot more casual now
'course the sand trap's existence is a part of it
06:54
Yeah, the sand trap is....
idk
It appears to work and keep the moderation load off TNB
But I think it's directly contributed to a decline in activity here, and personally, I'd prefer TNB to be more active and require a bit more moderation than it to die to inactivity
4
mm that's fair
i enjoy the conversations in there so i'd be pretty annoyed if they were moderated as much as i remember they were here
but i've also been too inactive to have any gauge for the attitudes or to have any say really :P
I fully have not ever engaged with it tbh
As an aside, mathjax using \$ always trips me up :P
I take notes for my math degree in Latex, using $, so have to actively change over when I do math formatting here :P
hah yes
i've been drafting things in stackedit and i have pretty much the same issue
@totallyhuman apparently for no real reason 'cause it only seems to have lasted five days
@cairdcoinheringaahing not in double digits yet? you're still a youngster
@Neil I never claimed to be the oldest :P
Well aware there's lots of people older still here; after all, I did write up the history of CGCC :P
07:10
well it's just your claim that 7 is long
you hit double digits two weeks ago :P
It's 1/3rd of my life, I think it's a fair claim :P
something about ppcg just attracts 14 year olds huh
ngl, I still love the fact that I use Jelly as my default programming language :P
@totallyhuman I learnt it when I first joined ppcg, when I was 14-15 years old, and it's still my goto lang :P
definitely not the worst golflang to be a goto lang
though a literate mode would've made it much much better still :P
heh you are not the first person to link that to me within the last couple weeks :P
I still get that mixed up with Jellyfish, the 2d lang
i'm pretty sure ppcg changed my life significantly

Q: Calculate my grade

caird coinheringaahin gEveryone[citation needed] knows that its finals season right now (severely dependent on whether you're in education at the moment, and what school/university you go to). I don't know what grade I'm going to get, so I need the bright minds over at CGCC to calculate it for me. I know the grades I g...

only pretty sure? :P
07:28
@Adám I can confidently say the same tbh
i'm very sure, despite having "taken a break" for several years
@cairdcoinheringaahing in that case... you're still a youngster, it's ~1/8 of my life
@NewPosts This may or may not be inspired by the two finals I have to sit tomorrow ಠ_ಠ
@Neil Of course, I can never catch up/beat you :P
with the exception of usage of certain more sci-fi methods

Q: Scan input for numbers and add thousands separators

Use commas only and ignore leading zeroes. Leave the rest of the input unchanged. Test cases |Input|Output|De...

07:50
@totallyhuman he can only reduce the amount he ages by increasing his speed, but that will just increase the disparity
@cairdcoinheringaahing hey don't go exposing me like that. I worked hard to make this site into my own personal voting ring :p
@Neil that's assuming defensive usage of said sci-fi methods
08:11
@Adám definitely same here
08:28
@Adám I don't have a life so there was nothing to change
It both got me into this whole "explain your code" business which lead to me making like 150 videos explaining APL code, and really got me to look into the nooks and crannies of the language which probably contributed to me becoming Head of Language Design.

Code golf has definitely revealed a whole lot more about the world of programming to me than something like university might. If it wasn't for code golf, I wouldn't have learned things like functional programming, tacit programming, stack languages, community management, moderation skills (more than just diamond stuff, I mean like detecting spam and doing reviews in the queues), CI, Git, and more.
12
And ofc there's the exposure to less conventional languages that this site has given me. It's nice knowing that I won't be forever blind to the wonders of going beyond praclangs and English looking keywords
It's enlightening and nice not being confused or intimidated when seeing apl or bqn or any language that uses Unicode tokens
I would say that this site, as well as being a golflang creator has significantly improved my life
@NewPosts wonders whether this question is likely to be undeleted

1 hour later…
11:52
@Neil Once I have acquired enough sleep for my brain to properly fix the issues, yes, I hope so
But I posted it thinking it was an easy, clean challenge, and then when clarification requests came in, I realised it can wait a bit

3 hours later…
15:16
@emanresuA, another bug: pushing to the global stack makes things nested (i.e. pushing 1 global stack would result in global stack being [ [1] ] rather than [1]) this is actually fine most of the time due to javascript's implicit type-casting ability, but this causes problem with the conditional skip which would treat a nested zero as truthy rather than falsy

1 hour later…
16:34
@Adám CGCC definitely introduced me to a wider variety of programming languages. here i learned functional programming, APL, and got a passion for endless design but never finishing new praclangs :P
as well as making a lot of online friends
so yeah, my life was def changed by CGCC
even though ive been here for 2y5m, a baby compared to yall :P
16:55
how do you check how long you’ve been a member?
i think i’ve been here for like 2 years
Go to the user's user page on the relevant site, and look for the cake.
here 2 years, 3 months
i wasn’t active for the first couple months iirc though
my first submission is december 2021, then it skips to april 2022 and i got more active from there
i was really bad at code golf lol
i only started coding in 2020 though
17:27
2 years 4 months :p
2 years 10 months :)
@Neil 10-year gang \o/
18:02
5 years, 1 month
@DLosc \o/
18:20
@Mukundan314 Fixed, I'm very smart
Also wow, I didn't realise you'd done it
3 years 1 month here
A little under 20% of my life
@cairdcoinheringaahing Agreed. It could be worth experimenting with freezing tst for a week (and pointing discussion here), and seeing how that affects activity here and whether we want to keep it that way.
3
@lyxal Agreed, and one more thing I'd add to this is technical writing. Creating 80+ challenges and hundreds of answer explanations has taught me a huge amount about how to accurately describe these sorts of things, and it's a subject that at least here in NZ is woefully undertaught.
18:41
that does sound rewarding 🙃
@lyxal agreed
18:53
@emanresuA In the end, we can't just package conversations into neat little boxes and put them in their own rooms, and trying to do so has lead to... this. I think we should try to bring TNB back to what it was a few years ago: A place for people to talk, regardless of "on-topic"-ness.
if you want rydwolf talking about people being covered in blood in here instead of in TST, who am I to stop you :p
I do think the TNB/TST split is helpful. We're not constantly having on-topic discussions here, and sometimes allowing off-topic chat here would be nice, but if people are having a big off-topic discussion with hundreds of messages, it's nice that it doesn't drown out on-topic things like "Hey, this post is spam, flag pls"
Fair point :P
an alternative to that is to just direct stuff like "this is spam" to the mod office instead, now granted that does slow down the process (especially since I might not always be in that room) but also reporting it to CHQ is faster than either
I think it's worth considering something, I haven't thought about it much though
19:13
True
But then there's also stuff like "Is this on-topic / duplicate / unclear?"
And asking for sandbox feedback
att

19:54
@UnrelatedString our metrics are surprisingly close
I am back, but still inactive.
20:20
Can you work out what positive ntegers x and y are from x^2 + y^2?
@noodleman oh 3 years, 8 months!
that's one-half of my life!
(im joking dont ban me plz)
m90
m90
@Simd No: for example, (7, 1) and (5, 5) have the same sum of squares.
If you're Jo King you're definitely under the age of 18
double ban
wait is joking under 18 or are you joking?
I'm under 18 so clearly I'm not joking
20:33
noted, one suspect less
@mathscat hey just realised there's a james grimes cameo!!!!
haven't seen him around in a while
20:56
@m90 thanks!
21:20
@mathscat my old SO account got deleted because i was 12 lol
i have no idea how they found out
21:34
@emanresuA I'd be up for that
Gives ROs a chance to actually do something :p
I'd back a cg meta post to have the experiment
interesting
I suspect a fair few people would also support such a meta post - last time the issue of activity was mentioned, 17 people starred my message about how TNB isn't as fun as it used to be
There's definitely a non-trivial set of code golfers who want this room back to its former glory, so I'd say it's time to look into doing that
@DLosc an idea for that: if you wanted to make a serious request like that, you could prepend something like **SRS:** to the message and a bot could temporarily star/pin it so that it's got starboard attention. Then, once it's handled, the star can be cleared by ROs/mods
22:18
@lyxal Could work, as long as it's not abused you're willing to ban people who abuse it
automate that too
22:44
@DLosc well yeah
It'd require RO moderation and potentially chat warnings and even bans
@m90 there's even (3, 4) and (0, 5)
@DLosc Same way anyone causing problems in chat would be handled
23:17
@lyxal or just forward it to the mod office
optionally with pings
it'd be better to keep it here
I heard someone say "bot" :p
Mfw installing docker requires me to restart my computer but restarting my computer triggers Windows updates
Thanks docker
linux
markdown fail
23:26
shh
---strike--- :3
@lyxal to clarify: if this suggestion is implemented, I would be more than happy to make and host the bot (presuming SE ever gets around to unblocking me...)
@Ginger cant we all agree on a standard
@Seggan on a surface? Nah that doesn't sound stable at all
@Ginger shush i was finding that one
23:29
Apparently Michaelsoft uses a few funky non standard software that makes running Linux a bit special
fastest google in the west
@lyxal shocking
we love michaelsoft
fortunately, now we are standardizing on phone chargers
It exists, but sounds like it go be goofy ahh
@lyxal Me trying to play Age of Empires II with someone yesterday :P
why does the docker sign up page not let you continue until you tick the "Send me occasional product updates and announcements." box?
oh it does
page was being a bit goofy is all
grainy 😋
23:33
@lyxal reading the docs, it seems like the problems are mostly MS doing hardware weird
nothing ridiculously arcane like with Chromebooks
hm, well I still don't feel like screwing up my surface so I'll pass on linux for now :p
my condolences
anything for the nice feeling trackpad
