@Ginger probably because the message didn’t exist somehow
even though I could see it, reply to it, hit the edit button

What's the correct close reason?
Off topic
There's a close reason that says:
> This site is for programming contests and challenges. General programming questions are off-topic here. You may be able to get help on Stack Overflow.
That's what I used
Technically is not a "General programming question", no?
The wording is a bit off, but it's the general off-topic reason
you can also use a custom close reason, but that will leave a comment

would “compile JS to JSFuck” be a good golf challenge?
I think it might be interesting, if it hasn't been done before
i haven’t found any
i’m interested how short other languages could do it
is there any way to construct arbitrary strings in JS with a char set smaller than JSFuck?
It would basically come down to building a string to be evaled. Probably the shortest to build every character as 1+1+1+1+1... which will be longer but shorter to generate since you don't need to special case characters

Q: JSF**k with only 5 symbols?

Jens RendersThis is not a challenge but a question, I figured it was on topic because of Non-challenge questions that are related to solving programming puzzles or a particular type of challenge are also on topic. Now on to the question: Is it possible to write any JavaScript code with only 5 letters?...

but for my challenge it doesn’t need arbitrary JS, just arbitrary strings, which seems like it might be possible without constructor
> Side note: You can almost do JSF*** without parentheses by replacing bounding parentheses (xyz) with [xyz][+[]], but that removes function calls, making many things impossible. – ETHproductions
maybe something with a back tick instead of parens to do function calls?
it only needs to support printable ASCII

should be to match e.g.

Sounds good to me. There are some other plural tags, though; on the first page of tags, I note and .
So if we're singularifying, maybe we should singularify all of them.
(Not including stuff like , which should be plural.)

Q: Should tags be plural or singular?

Martin EnderAs part of The Great Tagging Survey, I've noticed that the pluralisation of our tags is a bit inconsistent. The following lists all tags that refer to some kind of object that is dealt with in the corresponding challenges. Singular numberstringgamesequenceregular-expressiondategridfractalfuncti...

@noodleman Sounds like a title for a children's book about early Rome

@DLosc I smell a meta post here ...

CMC: Given 2 numbers a and b, output the log (base a) of b. Catch(?): Standard loopholes are allowed.
metagolfscript 0 bytes I guess?
Standard loopholes are loopholes for a reason: They are incredibly boring
19:32
@mathscat i was gonna post it but found that
@TheEmptyStringPhotographer noodle_man_Log, 0 bytes
20:07
@TheEmptyStringPhotographer the_best_lang_ever, -1 bytes (custom charset)
@mathscat how do you get negative bytes?
it's a secret
20:27
it's very simple: you have 0 bytes, and then you golf off one more
3
when you install the_best_language it caches your disk space and uses the difference between that and the current run
To get negative bytes, first you get imaginary bytes, then you translate to a 2d lang
@noodleman umm how do you cache disk space?
@mousetail hey you can't disclose my company's confidential information like that
20:43
bytes are isomorphic to the complex plane
(whatever that means)
@mathscat Guys you’re overthinking it. The programme contains 8 characters, but the language just has a charset of half a character.
no no, we are working on a new methodology that bijectively maps bytes to the field of quaternions
By the log rule, 8 * log_256(1/2) = -1 bytes
21:07
@TheEmptyStringPhotographer you cant have half a character
@Ginger I'm convinced isomorphic and homomorphic are made up words mathematicians use to prank us
Ah yes the manifold is diamorphic to the quasicomplex ring
oh gosh
I met somebody who studies manifolds and stuff like that
I had to look up every second word he used
I've read the wikipedia pages on manifolds and maps and such like 20 times but I still don't actually understand what even is a manifold
Some kind of generalization for a shape it seems? But I'm very confused
@mousetail exactly!
21:49
Do... do we not have a challenge on a fractran interpreter? There's a self interpreter challenge, but no standard "write a fractran interpreter" challenge
I still have no idea how Fractran works
@mousetail All words are made up
22:49
@Seggan i meant caches the amount of bytes your disk is using
@cairdcoinheringaahing This is sort of like if you're a doctor and your patient asks "Am I gonna die?" and you say "Well, yes, at some point"
Since when does MS Paint (not Paint 3d I mean the base one) have transparent backgrounds?
Last I checked it only ever gave you white as a background :p
@lyxal Whoa, really?
I was just as surprised as yo
*you
I opened up paint to make a joke in reply to the half characters image, and I tried extending the canvas and it had the transparent background pattern
so I made an image, saved it, and yep it's a transparent png'
Must be a Windows 11 perk
22:55
@DLosc I think so
there's also a "remove background from image" button now?!
Very nice
THERE'S LAYERING OPTIONS
Why do you need layers in paint of all things
paint 3d I could understand having layers, but base paint?!
That will be super useful for some of the stuff I do in Paint
E.g. positioning text in a speech bubble--if I can move the text after I've created it, that'll make things a lot easier
it's not that advanced sadly
it's just you can draw things on different layers like you can photoshop
you still have to select things in the same way
but I guess it doesn't matter if it's on its own layer
?
Yeah, I meant put the text on its own layer
22:59
ah
Right now, it's not entirely clear when you're entering the text which exact pixels it's going to land in, and so it sometimes accidentally overlaps the edge of the speech bubble. In those cases, I have to hit Ctrl-Z and trial-and-error till I get it positioned right.
so I guess this MS Paint buff is just what you needed :p
it's a pleasant surprise I wasn't expecting today
Transparent backgrounds and layers are two of the top things I would've wished for, yes :P
also I now realise it's probably been that way for like a few months now because I haven't used paint in ages, but I have done a few win11 updates
But since my laptop still works fine despite being from 2015, I am probably not getting Windows 11 anytime soon.
OTOH my desktop is from 2012 and has a few problems, so that might be a stronger possibility.
23:04
I see it was a september thing
wait they're adding AI image gen to Ms Paint?!
> Paint has been enhanced with AI for drawing and digital creation with the addition of background removal and layers as well as a preview of Cocreator that brings the power of generative AI to the Paint app.
@lyxal I hear this headline in the voice of Baymax
> Additionally, we introduced powerful new Surface devices that bring all these AI experiences to life for you, and they are available for pre-order beginning today.
ain't no way
mfers already making new models 8 months after I get their (now previously) newest model
ah, wait, no they only released a new laptop go, and new studio
my Surface Laptop 5 is still good to go in terms of relevancy :p
