zip([0]+x, x+[0]), zips together two lists: x with zero prepended and x with zero appended

map(sum, ...) sums ^ pairwise

so if x=[1,2,1], the zip does: [(0, 1), (1, 2), (2, 1), (1, 0)]

and the sum does [0+1, 1+2, 2+1, 1+0]

the *x,= forces the map to be a list

basically a Mars heightmap

this site has "shaded" maps, which I'm not 100% sure are what I want
