Q: Alienese cycles

caird coinheringaahingAlienese refers to two "languages" in the show Futurama. In actuality, they are two ciphers of English text with a pictographic alphabet. The first is a simple substitution cipher, but the second is slightly more complex. The second is a type of autokey cipher that follows these steps: Take a wo...

@emanresuA I have more than 51 but they're private repos
I've got 38 private repos and 51 public
Do you think there's going to be a Vyxal 4?
Maybe
It's something I haven't thought about but it could happen sometime in 2023
@Mayube It gets worse: you can't suggest edits on meta
The meta suggested edits queue is, for some reason, only for tag wiki edits

ಠ_ಠ Part of my course involves learning LaTex. Which is fine, cause I've used it here a lot, so I'm familiar with a lot of it. Except for the fact that LaTeX uses $, not \$, so when writing up challenges here, I'm constantly using $ instead of \$, then wondering why it isn't formatting correctly
oh yeah it's really annoying that it's inconsistent ;-;
Can't you redefine stuff with LaTeX? Just make \$ do what it should(n't)
I don't think I can do that much redefining :P
piazza uses $$...$$ which... behaves quite differently in latex
Instead of trying to adapt to both, just lock yourself ever deeper into an incorrect routine like we all do
03:51
i don't think you can redefine an escaped character to not escape it and act as a syntactical component :p
I'm tempted to just write it up, then stick it through a regex101 substitution stage :P
([^\\])\$ -> \1$ should work, right?
a look-back should avoid the need for \1
do I know how to do that? nope :P
Me neither :P
I do math, not CS :P
If the regex works, I don't care how bad it is :P
04:13
Huh. If you use \tag elements in a mathjax equation, and you want math formatting, you have to do \tag{$...$}. Using \tag{\$...\$} shows the $ as they are. For example, the following is given by $$\begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix} \tag{\$R_1 \leftrightarrow R_2\$}$$ (if anyone else wants to repro):

Q: Is it an elementary matrix?

caird coinheringaahingConsider a linear system of equations, in \$n\$ unknowns, expressed as $$A \textbf x = \textbf b$$ where \$A \in M_{n,n}(\mathbb Z)\$ is an \$n \times n\$ matrix of integers, \$\textbf x\$ is a column vector of unknowns \$(x_1, x_2, \dots, x_n)\$ and \$\textbf b = (b_1, b_2, \dots, b_n)\$ is a co...

Q: What loopholes should be assumed when a name-specific file is used for code golf?

nrgmsbki4spot1I have posted this golfing tip for Bash before: In Pure Bash (or any other pure shellscript), use . for looping. It's a tip that recomments using a file whose the program has. I have ever posted these answers that uses the tip: Implement a Truth-Machine 1, 2, Fizz, 4, Buzz Swap every two eleme...

Wouldn't everyone know the result at once?
@emanresuA yay
@RedwolfPrograms but its 2025 o_O
@Fmbalbuena apl has lesser commands than vyxal, i would think that apl would be easier to learn
It's more that it's easier to transition to from traditional programming languages. If you're learning programming from scratch (See Adam's commentary on teaching his children APL), APL's probably easier.

It's also that Vyxal's a golflang, meaning you actually use a lot less of the builtins, unless you're golfing with it.
@emanresuA yeah tryin to fit traditional programming concepts in apl just doesnt work
@emanresuA golfing is what the language is made for
09:32
@PyGamer0 For example, these are quite similar:
@emanresuA Unlike traditional languages, the better you are at a golfing language, the less of the language you use :P

@cairdcoinheringaahing True :P
wait do you press ctrl+f everytime if you want to search for some golfier element?
except in the case of that one time you use one of the super obscure jelly builtins
bah, do some sites not allow anonymous suggested edits?
09:34
Meta sites don't
(Except for MSE)
@UnrelatedString Catch me over here using Æ¡ :P
i actually don't know what factorial base even is
i know i tried using it at some point
nah, this was electronics I think
someone had broken mathjax in their answer but there's no improve link
i think i tried looking it up and did not actually get anything but it didn't occur to me to just look at good old interpreter.py
okay no that's pretty much what i thought it was
wait i had no idea æi existed
that's cool
also now i'm wondering if æ* has ever been used except in my solution to that nato alphabet challenge
@UnrelatedString what does æ* do?
10:01
@UnrelatedString Yeah, I've used it a couple of times
@UnrelatedString thanks for linking that, I'd forgotten to update the TIO link on my answer
10:27
@JoKing Nice PFP :P
Are you ever going to go back to an identicon after these?
probably not, but i have it saved just in case
I think it's always an option.
Right now I am plat, and I'll probably stay that way until I want something else or Lyxal forgets to clean me.
Anyway, 'night
i think there was some Mother Meta post about how the older gravicons might get lost in an update, so i've got mine downloaded
@JoKing I feel like I've seen it somewhere before /s
it's ripped from a mobile game i used to play called Monolisk

I was more saying that of course I've seen it because it's what (i think) you use on discord lol

Someone posted this on the CGCC Discord. It's in other languages too
I just tried to sync my school Gmail account because I have handy bookmarks on my school Chromebook that I wanted to access on my own laptop. I got the bookmarks I wanted, but it also downloaded all the extensions the administrators installed, including the ones that report your search history and aggressively block websites. Not only that, most of the settings became locked, just like on the school laptop. Turning sync off lost my entire profile, including bookmarks and search history ಠ_ಠ
Protip: Don't sync school (and probably work) accounts
2
well, not to your personal profile, anyway... just create a new profile
13:46
You can sync a non-personal account to your personal profile?
14:36
@PyGamer0 But it's hard to learn for some reason
It’s a funny thing. When you pose a new question, people answer or upvote your old questions instead

Q: Pushing the limits, to make a piece of code short

Ishaan KapoorI am trying to push my limits of making a python code as short as possible. I left the readability part way behind. I was attempting the K-Goodness String problem from Round A of Google Kick Start 2021. The following was my initial solution: def func(N, K, S): if not S: return 0 y = 0 ...

1 hour later…
15:40
@user isn't that what you said you did?
15:54
No, I turned syncing on for the school Chromebook and then for the profile I made for my school account on my personal laptop so the two would have the same bookmarks
16:51
@cairdcoinheringaahing Wait, what's surprising about that? Doesn't \$ usually just escape the $?
@PyGamer0
@Fmbalbuena yes i saw your notification
@user so how did you lose your profile, if you made a separate profile for your school account?
@Fmbalbuena i would argue that some things in it are intuitive
17:00
I have absolutely no idea
i would also argue that i need sleep
I'm guessing I clicked on something wrong to make it overwrite my profile with all the settings on the Chromebook
@RedwolfPrograms But MathJax uses \$ for the beginning and end itself, right?
Only on CGCC...
Ah
oh cool JoKing is back
17:04
@user
he is not manny queen anymore
@Neil Hmm, it looks like I didn't have a profile at all before syncing? Or maybe I've made some semi-permanent change to Chrome now, because I just deleted the school-managed profile and tried to make a new one with the same email, and this time it immediately tells me I'm adding a managed profile to my browser
I guess installing Chrome again would be the only way to see what happened, but I'm too lazy for that now
@Fmbalbuena Yes?
@user You made TC Programming language?
I guess?
Why do you ask?
@Fmbalbuena you are on cgcc what do you expect: P
everyone has made atleast one TC lang
17:07
Because i like Esolangs.
(Including golfing langs)
@Fmbalbuena do you count attempted assembly clones as esolangs?
No. not counting.
18:06
@Adám What happened?
@Fmbalbuena With what?
The Nineteenth bakery? I'm looking. But what happened, The Nineteenth bakery
(I want to read messages)
Banner‽ I have no idea what you're talking about.
Sorry typo
The Nineteenth Bakery.
Only mods and ROs are allowed in.
18:13
Why?
Because that allows even ROs to "nuke" messages, meaning remove them without letting people read the removed message.
also, it's mostly used to trash bot messages for spam/off-topic questions so it's not like there's much interesting to see anyway
longer off-topic conversations tend to just be left here because TNB isn't a particularly focused chat room in the first place, and if it belongs in another room we'll just put it there
FWIW, I disagree that the room is private
Gallery, sure
but it would be very good to have transparency into what has been moved there
@pxeger (how long has it been that way?)
like
2 days
18:18
can we turn it back please?
FWIW i don't personally care much either way but I agree with the transparency argument and full-nuking messages is supposed to be a mod power anyway
18:43
We need chat mods
Unfortunately, I suspect Mith's proposal for chat mods will be left to gather dust and completely ignored by SE
The only way I see it happening is if they decide to rehaul chat, and that's a long way off
@RedwolfPrograms It means that the Mathjax uses inconsistent delimiters for starting/ending math mode, in certain environments
Ohh that was in CGCC, not LaTeX
It still makes sense though
The delimiters the site specifies are only for starting/ending MathJax, not the math formatting
You could make $ start, for example, MathML instead
MathJax != the math formatting it uses
So the outer math delimiter won't be the same as any that were nested within it
19:27
hi all
hi @Fmbalbuena
is there a way to chart the number of views per hour for a question over a 24 hour period?
Yes, but you need a script running during those 24 hours
I don't think the views are tracked alongside any time information more granular than like per-day or per-week
@RedwolfPrograms ah interesting.. can you explain how the running script would work?
I know almost nothing about this
You'd use the API to get the views once every hour
api.stackexchange.com/2.2/questions/[id] IIRC
is there a nice python module for interacting with the api?
Probably not, but the response is just JSON
You'd have to have ran the script during those 24 hours
as in what [id] for that? It's not just the numbers
sorry. what is [id] for that question?
237232
But you can't get the view count from any past date. You'd have to run a script during the 24 hours you wanted to track.
@Anush You know what they say: If you want something done right, you pay a professional to do it for you. If you're broke, just do it yourself but poorly
19:53
@user true! :)
@user I am in the latter category :)
If you want, I can write a script that keeps track of views, score, etc. for the first 24h
@RedwolfPrograms that would be awesome!
this is still definitely the best place on the internet
there a lot of bounties currently on cgcc!
(ccgc? )
is there anywhere else on the internet where people can discuss coding in a relaxed way?
I'm sure there is :p
I haven't seen it if there is!
You'd have to have the script running for the whole 24h, or set to run once every hour during that time. I'm actually thinking, I might just run this on my server for all questions.
20:01
ok.. my pc is on all night so I can do that too
it's a linux box though
I'll probably use Node.js since I'm more familiar with it, although you can definitely port it to Python if you want
ok. I don't know js apart from the wtfjs website :)
when I try to use discord I get told there is something odd going on and it needs to send me a 6 digit code to my phone. Then my phone receives a message saying "An existing Discord account is already using this number Please remove it before it can be used with a new account."
that's why I never use discord!
no idea what is in there :)
I hate sites that make you associate them with a phone number, both of the phone numbers I've had so far have had other people own them before, and they apparently went around making accounts all over the place lol
me too!
or rice bunny as I have recently learned you can write instead
I might actually make it more granual than hourly
20:15
why?
Why not? :p
the great peter taylor seems to be on codidact? codegolf.codidact.com/posts/283789?sort=active
@RedwolfPrograms ah more granular means more fine grained :)
sorry I misunderstood
they use the same TIO I see
it's really not active though codegolf.codidact.com/?sort=activity
seems to be less than a question a month?
actually maybe more than one a month but not that much more
why have all these old questions got bounties now? codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions?tab=Bounties
> a reward for this deadlineless bounty for good answers to unanswered questions
Those were some of the highest voted unanswered questions a while back
it's pretty amazing they all got answered in the same week
what happened?
It was the same user
You can typically figure an unanswered question about in a day or two, I've done it twice
Haven't posted the second because I'm too burnt out on it to golf and write an explanation for it
20:31
I see att, m90, tjjfvi three times, alephalpha, Aaroneous Miller
they all seem to have answered these questions in the same week
Probably a coincidence, or maybe one of them caused the others to notice and try out some unanswered questions
it's most likely that
I hope my lovely question doesn't have to be added to the unanswered bounty list
I am a little surprised there has been no answer but maybe that's because it is the weekend
@RedwolfPrograms I can does golfing if you wants
SE really needs to sell community merch. I'd totally spend a few hundred dollars on CGCC posters, t-shirts, mugs, etc.
4
20:35
Plus it'd be another source of profit for them, and it'd make smaller communities more profitable
Since they're just as likely, if not more, to be proud of and want merch for their community
Any final feedback on Recognize a Roboto Mono character?
why choose a 80 character subset?
It makes it more interesting. You don't need 100% accuracy for all of ASCII, so you can strategize and pick the characters that are easiest for your approach to recognize. This lets more approaches be competitive.
would it make sense to give the example characters in a simple uncompressed image format?
I allow input in any format. Maybe I should post a .zip with .pgms though
Can we take input as a matrix of bits?
@RedwolfPrograms yes
I have to go for 10 hours but let me just advertise my question again :)
massive boasting rights for the first answer! :)
@RedwolfPrograms I would but I'd never be able to actually wear/use it because it'd draw too many unwanted questions
Then buy CGCC underwear or something
"What's Code Golf and Coding Challenges Stack Exchange?"
"It's this site where you make your code as short as possible"
"Why?"
"I dunno. It's very fun though, I've racked up over 10k rep there"
"Is 10k a lot?"
"I guess so"
"So *that*'s what you've been doing instead of your homework? (my mom, probably)"
it's not just making code short :)
20:53
@RedwolfPrograms A big part of merch is to show it to other people. What's the point of having low-quality underwear that no one will ever see?
That's the joke :p
Ah
CMQ: If there were CGCC merch (or merch for another site), would you buy it, and if so, what?
I would buy 10 of everything
If I'm not going to have a life I might as well have something to show for it :p
3
I would ironically get a shirt with this or smth on it if I didn't have a reputation to maintain
Now I'm kinda wondering how many LOC I've written
I mean a lot of it's probably lost to time since it would've been in REPLs or consoles or another computer, but if I summed up everything on my current laptop I'd probably catch half or two thirds of it...
21:02
Are you going to count lines of code that you deleted and replaced?
No, probably not
Y'know, instead of using rrrgggbb for 8-bit color, there should be a format that uses the first 16 possiblities for 16 grayscale colors, then the remaining 240 would be divided into either 12 or 24 hues, with either 10 or 20 combinations of saturation and lightness available
I'll invent that now, actually. I call it PSIF.
(Pixel Sprite Image Format, since the limited number of hues might limit it mainly to pixel art and charts/graphs, rather than actual photos)
<insert xkcd about people making new standards to rule them all>
21:31
@user If there was merch that just had the logo on it, I'd definitely buy everything they had :P
@StackExchange Take notes, people! :P
I think we've talked to Catija about merch before, and IIRC, they'd like to, but don't have a good merch distributor
You know what they say: If you want something done right, you steal kidnap someone else's merch distributor and coerce them into producing merch for you
22:01
print shirts where the logo is positioned around the neck so it looks like you're wearing the medal
@user double strikethrough doesn't work
@UnrelatedString I would unironically wear that if someone made it
what is the current view about codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/237232/… ? Impossible, interesting, something think about in a few days?
those were meant to be different options
is it ok to cross-post to codidact?
22:22
yes
Thanks. It’s always hard to guess
topanswers quite likes it if you cross post se questions there
