Okay so say you're hypothetically 15 years old and you'll be home alone for the next few days. You've discovered that you have all of the necessary ingredients to make either cookies or brownies. This is, of course, theoretical. Which would you make?

Tough question
Brownies

Depends on your skills
And the recipes
@lyxal Good choice
Cookies can be hard

I was sort of thinking cookies, idk

@user exactly

The brownies would be much easier, especially since it's also a box of brownie mix instead of having to make it myself, but I don't actually know how old it is

2:46 AM
@BrowncatPrograms and you can't make both?

Dang

Hypothetically, of course :p

@BrowncatPrograms hey wait why tf would you make cookies from brownie mix?

No I'd make cookies using cookie ingredients

2:48 AM
You say you have a box of brownie mix

I have a box of brownie mix I found, and separately ingredients which could be used for cookies

So then make both

Protip: Just go to any site to get free cookies

Ez

Follow me for more baking tips

2:48 AM
@BrowncatPrograms brownie mix for brownies, cookie stuff for cookies

hello lyxal

@les-citrons hello citrons

I can't make both because that would be too much baked goods for a couple of days, and I'm technically (hypothetically) not supposed to be making them at all :p

Oh, and when making brownies, make sure they don’t get charred and turn black

Browniies

2:49 AM
Good choice, I too like eating fay folk

@BrowncatPrograms so by giving you suggestions, we're hypothetically being a bad influence on you

Hmm, it seems I'm outvoted. I've got a tough decision to make; should I adhere to the principles of democracy and trust in the public's collective knowledge, or overrule them and make cookies with impunity?
@lyxal No, because I'm not asking y'all whether or not I should, that's already theoretically decided :p

Make both, and give one to your family as a 'welcome home' thingy

@BrowncatPrograms aww
Here's me thinking I was accomplishing life goals
Hypothetical life goals of course

@BrowncatPrograms See this isn’t democracy this is just you talking to yourself and us, your imaginary friends

2:53 AM
What next, I've been in a coma for the last thirty years, none of this is real, and they're trying a new method of getting me to wake up by telling me to tell myself that this entire universe is just a construct of my imagination?

Ooh I've always wanted to be the construct of someone's imagination
4

Well today's your lucky day

@lyxal Me too, I want whoever’s dreaming me to wake up so I can stop exiting

No, we're all hallucinating, none of us actually exist

I think therefore I am

2:56 AM
@emanresuA That's not possible, but what's possible is constrained by our own hallucinations

I think not.

I exist, even if this is a dream and I’m actually a space octopus in a universe with 5 dimensions and hot dog shaped planets

Or you don't, and emanresu A is just imagining you said that

You, on the other hand, could just be figments of my imagination, in which case: BEGONE
@BrowncatPrograms But I must exist as a separate entity (unless you’re saying I’m also emanresu)

Well, does the redwolf hivemind still exist?

2:59 AM
It might, but only because we all hallucinate it together

@emanresuA We can never know what truly exists and what doesn’t
Reslity might be an illusion

We're all actually collectively just part of a government experiment in some other universe where they make us all into the sort of people who think about this sort of stuff to see if the universe explodes or anything
The other universe is almost identical except eating spiders is perfectly normal

Eating spiders is perfectly normal.

Nice, I’ve always wanted to be a lab-space octopus in a universe with 5 dimensions where planets are shaped like hot dogs being experimented on by the mollusk government
@BrowncatPrograms ^

No, sorry, it's a fungus government.

3:02 AM
:(
@BrowncatPrograms Wait, eating spiders is perfectly normal here too, right? Right?

Oh I thought it was some kind of reference to Children of Time
Although the spiders are the ones doing the eating there

surge.sh

Dammit

3:06 AM
It's a rickroll
I sacrificed myself for y'all

I've had that for a while
in case anyone's wondering, the 404 page is a rickroll

@emanresuA 11 digits 🤔

Wait, isn't that normal? Give me your phone number and I'll compare them.

3:23 AM
Sorry
Wait a minute…

Mine's 7722574501.
Sorry, I meant +1-7607067425.

Are posting our real phone numbers here lol

3:39 AM
10 digits seems normal if it's just area code + number as in (XXX) YYY YYYY (X = area code) but with the country code it's usually longer
like, I see 1800 numbers all the time (I think that's like toll free international) so it's +1-800-XXX-XXXX

I missed a "we" there ^^^ >:|
@hyper-neutrino I always thought +1 was just the code for the US

i think +1 is US (well, canada too) but i mean i think +1-800 numbers mean that you can call it internationally without extra fees or something liek that
idk

Yeah, I think the 800 has something to do with not costing money but idk

the +800 code is for the international freephone service apparently
though idk what the +1-800 is then
ok so it looks like 800 is just the USA area code for the "Toll-Free" "region"

idk about other countries, but i know that australia has 1800 for tollfree, 1300 is local rates

3:43 AM
huh. so maybe everyone just agreed that 800 would be for toll-free usage as an area code lol

A toll-free telephone number or freephone number is a telephone number that is billed for all arriving calls instead of incurring charges to the originating telephone subscriber. For the calling party, a call to a toll-free number from a landline is free of charge. A toll-free, Freecall, Freephone, 0120, 800, 0800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844, 833 number is identified by a dialing prefix similar to a geographic area code. The specific service access numbers vary by country. == History == The features of toll-free services have evolved as telephone networks have moved from electro-mechanical c...

ah, interesting

not quite, but pretty damn close to all being 1800

4:31 AM
CMC: Basic calculator that supports +(add) -(subtract) *(multiply) /(divide), Input format: Arbitrary spaces around numbers should be handled; the calculator uses infix and negative numbers should be handled in the calculation but there wont be any in the input (brownie points if it handles this). Everything evaluates from right to left. Ex: 3 * 5+6 -> 33 & 3 + 6 + 7-8 -> 8 & 1 / 0 -> <whatever>

Hello
Js: eval

Uh...no?
It's right to left, right?

And neither of those languages are right to left

yeah
thats my smart catch

4:35 AM
so

ḣy$Y+Ṅ† (single digit numbers only)

@PyGamer0 ȧ`(\\D)`ṡṘyJṄĖ
arbitrary length digits, as many spaces as you want

Thanks for tidying up my mess :p

`(\\D)`ṡṘyJṄĖ actually

actually

4:47 AM
`(\D)`ṡṘyJṄĖ is my best and final

@lyxal but doesnt evaluate from right to left

yes it does

2 * 4 + 2 -> 12
but it says 10?

Oh wait, I see

@emanresuA you monster
i fell for it lol

4:49 AM
`(\D)`ṡyṘJṄĖ for exactly the same byte count

I love that bug feature

5:10 AM
hey @emanresuA just omit the bounty for me
I already like the language, no need for rep persuasion

6:00 AM
wait did i just see lyxal and joking leave and lyxal joining at the same time?!

Probably

conspriacy theory time
have you ever seen lyxal and joking in the same room

Yes
Right now actually
The real conspiracy is that JoKing and WizzWizz4 are the same

@lyxal in real life

It's been 6 months, and I've yet to see them in the same room
@Razetime well I barely see anyone in real life because introversion, so the question is a tiny bit unfair :p

6:13 AM
this only fuels the theory further

There will a CM/Mod meetup soon - please bring up any specific things you'd like discussed here!

6:28 AM
hm, maybe i should have posted this at a time when more people are awake

6:45 AM
how soon is "soon"?

8th september i believe
(at 1 am for me, so i probably won't be attending)

7:02 AM
Hii
@Razetime How 'bout if you do one I haven't answered, I'll just award the bounty on that.
I believe that Allxy, ruse/greg, and Vyxal bot are all the same person.

@emanresuA incorrect

@Allxy correct

@lyxal very cool, thank you

Wait, so Lyxal, Jo King and Greg are the same person?
Oh wait no
I see

@emanresuA what do you see?

7:16 AM
Vyxal bot and Bubbler are the same

...

...

Also, pxeger is a sock of JHT bot

The plot thickens

Indeed it does

7:19 AM
@emanresuA nah screw it no bounty

Ok, sure...

gamign

i'm not wearing any socks

you can't program without socks

@JoKing are you wearing thongs then?

7:56 AM
now my computer is switched to an ssd
so i will have to install everything again

This could simplify download grinders

8:51 AM
Hi

9:18 AM
i just realized i have to install everything

Start with a browser, and try to find your command line. From there, you probably want Python and vscode, then you can install other stuff as you need or have time.

9:40 AM
@lyxal What do you mean by a.trim(b) in the docs for divmod?

9:54 AM
@emanresuA real gamers use IE and (n)vim

Nice try
lyxal uses chrome and vscode

lol
i was taking about IE

firefox and emacs gang

@emanresuA i would need to make a list
@Razetime i use firefox
but not emacs

10:09 AM
Firefox + vscode gang
Just kidding, I use butterflies
...

hi i am now on my computer
should i get MSYS2 or cygwin is the real question

I have no idea what those are.

@emanresuA cygwin tries to bring POISX compatibility to windows and MSYS2 (cygwin fork) that allows porting *nix to windows

Ok, I think you should get MSYS2 because it's a derivative, so probably better.
Ooh, and it has bash

@emanresuA that link is sure to be a rickroll
also obviously it has bash

10:22 AM
I literally have a dedicated program to push a rickroll to whatever subdomain I want.

OOF

@PyGamer0 WSL2

@pxeger now i have to decide MSYS2 vs WSL2
(M|W)S(YS|L)2
ok i am confused

WSL is built in to Windows, so it has better integrations

ok lets try that

10:36 AM
> t Trim all elements of y from both sides of x.
From jelly docs
From where I stole it from
I think it's actually the same as P
But only for strings

Why then?

Probably because I didn't realise they are the same
And because I needed a string-string overload

time to restart my pc and i am gonna time it
wow that was super quick

It's speed

time to restart again :/
and i am back; its super fast

10:46 AM
Why you restarting so much
Why need computer off on repeated?
And why fast speed priority?

well i am enabling wsl2

And are you measuring it in GB/min
Or are you using m^2/L

?

Or seconds / hour

GB per minute and meters squared per litre

The two most common ways of measuring speed

I prefer kilopascals per angstrom.

Obviously you've never heard of these units

@emanresuA STOP i see the .surge.sh

@emanresuA hour/watt is superior tho

10:50 AM
Or Inches per penguin

But hours/cm^3/TB is most accurate

The best, though, is kilofeet per gigaounce.

Like "the car went 5.7pi hours per cubic centermeter per terabyte" is more specific than "yes inches per penguin"

i use Ohms second grams per meter square force

Woah

10:53 AM
@lyxal centermeter
much spel

@PyGamer0 we found a Harvard grad in the wild folks
Only complex engineering uses that
Like carrid's coin engineering company
They exclusively use Ohms second grams per meter square force
All other units of measurement don't cut it for coin production

Furlongs per smoot per beard-second per jiffy per slug per cubit per football field, I find.

@lyxal haha funny caird joke go brrr

11:10 AM
i have successfully installed zsh and WSL2
ok time to set up minecraft on my brother's account

11:40 AM
@JoKing This morning I had an epiphany and golfed 1 more byte off of the Lost Hello World. Bringing the total down to 36. Yesterday I gave a talk on Lost and the Hello world and I think all that thinking about it gave me time to stew.

...you gave a talk on Lost?

Yeah. My work has "Hackertalks" every Friday where you can just give a talk on whatever you are hacking.

@WheatWizard So Java devs shouldn't switch to BF, but they should switch to Lost.
Or Help, Wardoq!
Me when 1500 lines of yaml

@WheatWizard that's really cool. the golf is interesting, now i'm back in the rabbit hole of fiddling with it to see if i can find any bytes to remove

I'm not sure that 35 is possible. 36 seemed really possible and I kept getting really close. But I don't have any ideas for 35. I'd be really quite impressed by a 35.

@user There's like 2000 years of folklore about how bad of idea it is to eat the fay :P

@Dudecoinheringaahing I know the dangers, but it’s totally worth it :p

@NewPosts (cc @hyper-neutrino) If this isn't about CGCC specific stuff, how is it any different to the VP questions on MSE that we keep answering?

@Dudecoinheringaahing well for one it's only mods that get to participate and moreover with the VP questions we're not guaranteed to get a response or maybe just a quick one if we do but with this meetup the whole thing is centered around us and we can go more in-depth and have conversations about topics we've chosen

Btw does anyone know how this happened? (Scroll down past the spam one x6) Redwolf and I voted to reopen, but WW voted to leave closed, yet that somehow reopened it... I have no idea

I have no idea what to do with ^, so I'm just going to let other people deal with it :p
I've only been here for a few months, remember?

So should i put python on the windows side or the wsl side?
will it work with guis?

WSL side
if you mean GUIs written in Python: probably not, but GUIs are bad anyway

12:23 PM
pyglet / pygame?
i mainly use pyglet
bruh i have to install an X server then setup DE

just actually install linux

better if i use msys2 :/

it's much simpler

@pxeger you think my father will allow

well if he lets you install any software you like inside windows on your computer, he's likely not to care if you install linux

12:28 PM
@pxeger well no
ok i will just use msys2

1:15 PM
@PyGamer0 Why do you need tour father to approve? Just install it without showing him :p
@pxeger You mean dual booting or wsl?

no dualboot, totally replace winblows

1:56 PM
Oh
Somehow I don’t think pygamer’s father will be too happy with them wiping a perfectly good Windows installation tha Probably cost money :p

2:19 PM
I have good news and bad news
Bad news: The brownie mix expired two years ago
Good news: The cookies are in the oven
Making those cookies was a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. At first I didn't think I could make them, because I knew we didn't have any baking soda. But then...I found two whole boxes! And I got everything out, and started measuring ingredients, and then realized I had no butter. Usually I keep my butter separate from my family's butter because they ruin theirs, but it seemed they had taken mine with them. Their butter, which was actually that fake butter stuff, was nearly empty.

Just post some spam for high-quality butter

But wait! I managed to find an old package of the butter I use, with two little chunks left. I scraped the remains out of the package of my family's butter, and mixed it all together, and just barely managed to get a half cup (exactly what I needed).

That was a page-turning read, but don't leave us on a cliffhanger - are the cookies doing okay? :P

They're in the oven now.
All good!
And apparently cookies get a lot bigger when you put them in the oven, so I might actually end up with two baking sheet shaped cookies instead of a dozen normal ones :p

Square cookie time :P
I have to ask: why does everyone in your family have their own personal butter, and why do they need to carry butter with them? Is this a family of chefs or something?

2:30 PM
No, my family ruins their butter by microwaving it to soften it, and getting bread crumbs all in it. Plus they like fake butter more than the real stuff. Finally I had enough so I started getting my own butter. They're camping, so I figured they might've taken some butter.
So they always end up with these plastic tubs of crumb filled butter goop, while I have nice sticks of clean, precisely cut butter. Until they get jealous and start taking mine, of course.

Fake butter is better.

Sure, but real butter is butter :P

The cookies are done

Wheat Wizard bought a bit of bitter butter for batter but Wheat Wizard's butter was too bitter so Wheat Wizard bought a bit of better fake butter

They are good

2:35 PM
@BrowncatPrograms What's your GitHub username?

Ah, somehow just searching for Redwolf didn't show it
I have invited you to cookie as you are now a fellow cookie enjoyer

:( y no cookie?

I will not stand by and let the name of the cookie be used like this

2:39 PM
wdym? We are all cookie worshippers over at Vyxal/cookie

@user my brother would notice immediately

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'd seriously just dual boot if you actually need a linux install
I replaced my windows install with linux, and it was great most of the time, but when I did occasionally need windows it really made me regret the decision

@user lol, actually he had ubuntu on the computer(a long long time ago)

@BrowncatPrograms WSL should be okay for simple things, unless you want a GUI, but no one uses Linux because of the GUI anyway afaict

2:44 PM
until i forced told him to swtich to windows as a kid

CMP: Is Linux with Wine or Windows with WSL more convenient?

Option 2

@PyGamer0 You need three: ---strikethrough--- strikethrough

definitely windows with WSL

why is it 3

2:45 PM
@user Well yeah, I'm talking about if you need linux-linux, and are considering replacing windows altogether

i don't think anybody, not even the person who made SE markdown, knows why

It's better than 4, and you can't use 2 because some people use it for em-dashes (or is it en-dashes? I can never tell)

@user ----------oh no-----------

i'm personally a fan of ~~discord's version~~
the one thing that annoys me though
is that ---this--- doesn't work on the main site and <s>this</s> doesn't work here

And neither works in comments

2:47 PM
@hyper-neutrino Is this part of Philippe's network tour?

~~isnt it also used for githb?~~

@hyper-neutrino The main site doesn't need --- because there's HTML, and chat can't do raw HTML so they needed their own thing
@BrowncatPrograms This does annoy me, though - comments should have --- and > just like chat messages

@pxeger one reason i wouldn't want to do that is because i have minecraft bedrock

eh video games are not for me

my brother plays video games
(i play mc sometimes)

2:50 PM
which is why I've never needed windows

@hyper-neutrino And if I'm understanding correctly: SE's first consideration on making changes is that network wide > site specific. However, CGCC specific points and questions are allowed, just are less likely to be seriously asked/considered?

(well, actually I use a VM sometimes for MS Office, but I don't need that, I just do it because it's more convenient than G Suite)

@pxeger you can use office in the browser right?

I think you need a subscription for that which I don't have

Some things I've wanted to do in the past, like learn Z80 assembly for programming my TI-83, I haven't been able to do because I didn't have windows
Windows with WSL or a dual boot is definitely the best option in my opinion
Even if you use windows once a year

3:00 PM
@BrowncatPrograms in that case the windows partition can be smal

3:15 PM
@Dudecoinheringaahing no, I think this is a regular occurrence that happens every now and then
@Dudecoinheringaahing pretty much. I will try to broaden any CGCC-specific things to be a bit more applicable (or like apply them to CR or puzzling or some other oddball site too) and if it's way too specific I might just skip it and bring it up with the CMs privately instead of in a call with people from all sorts of sites

1 hour later…

CMP: What would be a good mascot for Scala?

What about some artsy form of a scale (fish, not measuring)?

Good idea
> Experiments have shown that the ring-tailed lemur, despite the lack of a large brain (relative to simiiform primates), can organize sequences, understand basic arithmetic operations and preferentially select tools based on functional qualities.

Oh great, now a lemur understands Haskell better than I do :P

Being able to do functional programming obviously makes ring-tailed lemurs the best mascots
CMQ: Mascot for Jelly/Husk/your favorite esolang?

@user Obviously it needs to be a scaly creature. Possibilities: komodo dragon, crocodile, cobra, actual dragon, pangolin
@user Quipu should have a llama, of course

4:37 PM
Not an alpaca? :P

The double "l" better represents the appearance of a Quipu program :P

@user Jelly should clearly be a very intricate and detailed art of someone lying on the floor muttering about weird characters, "atoms", "links", "monadic" and so on :P

@DLosc Good idea, although komodo dragons remind me of toilets, crocodiles remind me of the ugly footwear, cobras are evil, actual dragons have been taken by LLVM and Ghidra. Pangolins are cool though

Yeah, I figured dragons would be already taken, I just didn't know by what.

@Dudecoinheringaahing I vote for caird to become Jelly's mascot, with a picture of them being hooked up to a computer and incanting strange characters to bend said computer to their will
@DLosc Dragons are just too cool, everyone wants them :P

4:40 PM
Yup
I feel like the tuatara would make a good mascot, but it doesn't feel right to use it unless the language is created by someone from New Zealand

5:20 PM
Somebody in the comments at ExplainXKCD suggested using "my great aunt Catherine" instead of "my friend Catherine," and that tweak makes the results so much better XD

@user Linux with VirtualBox

I've done that. Works pretty well.

5:39 PM
@Neil Would you also suggest other hypervisors/vms or just virtualbox?
Ugh

5:53 PM
The one I've used at work is VMware, which is quite good, but I think it's overkill for personal use (and maybe doesn't have a free version--I haven't checked).
Just posted my first jq answer. Really neat language. Now to find a challenge that emanresu A hasn't already answered...
