@DJMcMayhem @Doorknob Thinking back about this comment I wrote, I fear it may have indirectly contributed to you guys not having some extra hands in the mod team. I'm sorry about that part. I hope the amount of work is manageable for you, and thanks for your great work!
01:30
@LuisMendo no worries!

Hey, so, uh, I finally just realised that @Doorknob's profile picture is actually a doorknob.
I always thought it was a worm
But I was clearly wrong

Q: .-...--..---.-...--..... the red-nosed reindeer

Dustin G. MixonCan you recover a sequence of letters from a sequence of dots and dashes? In Morse code, x is represented by -..-, but without the help of spaces, -..---.-... could represent xmas, or dole, or teettteteee, etc. I took the lyrics from "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" to make the following sequen...

@PostRockGarfHunter no, what exactly is misspelled?
this answer deserves some attention :)
Hey guys, can you please star this message so I can get a hat?

@JoKing how is 2020?
is it worth getting into?
or will it be another 2016?
@flawr fireworks were partially obscured by the smoke from the fires, so okay i guess?
2
maybe the olympics will be better
oh you're in that part of the world!
2
Just heard about those fires, must be incredible:(
13:48
@flawr incredible is one word for it... they've basically been burning since september
2
14:10
@JoKing Don't worry; only another four months or so before they go out on their own.
2
14:32
@wizzwizz4 Let's say 6-8 months.
@flawr Come on, where's the optimism?
Or November 1st?
Would it theoretically be possible to have a small fire in a huge ring forest such that the forest grows back at the same pace as the fire burns?
Using some human help I'm sure that this woudl be possible
@Adám Yes. ncase.me/sim
There used to be a lovely essay hosted there, but I think it's been taken down. ☹
14:53
It's partially present here: ncase.me/simulating/index_old.html but the interactivity is broken, which is sort of the whole point of it. If anyone wants to look at it how it was intended, you'll need to host the last good version yourself.
@flawr sorry, it is missing an l.
(completely unrelated news. it turns out that tq is extremely difficult to implement, and it took me ~4 hours to implement part of the langauge before i ran out of time. (i had to sleep at midnight.))
15:24
@PostRockGarfHunter I somehow still don't get it, could you be more specific? :)
@flawr ctrl+f → highighting
@flawr Syntax Highighting
d'oh
I'm blind :D
@PostRockGarfHunter @dzaima thanks a lot:)
@a'_' I noticed you had str([a])[1:-1] instead of repr(a) (or something; forget what the variable name was). Any particular obscure behaviour I should know about?
@wizzwizz4 I am trying to implement un-eval for the input.
15:30
@PostRockGarfHunter now I wonder how that is pronounced:)
@a'_' As far as I know, str([a]) is equivalent to '['+repr(a)+']'. Is there in fact a difference in behaviour between the two?
@wizzwizz4 Hmm. I didn't know about the repr function.
reciprocates greet
reverse greet

'greet'
@flawr Migh brain wants to pronounce it \haɪʔeɪtiŋ\ but it seems like it should just drop the l from the original pronunciation.

Hello
Hi Fabian

1 hour later…
17:51
@LuisMendo I am certain that someone else would have said something similar if not you.
Hm it's only 7pm and our town is already burning.
And I'm not even down under.
Literally or figuratively?
Literally
The school complex is up in flames.
Are there cameras? Who's shooting?
What? No one's shooting.
18:03
sorry

1 hour later…
19:05
@mınxomaτ :O
You said "already burning"
So... does that happen on a regular basis? :P
you know, usualy they wait a little bit until the new year started
But it is the German custom to burn down all schools once a year, right?
6
of course, what else would you do with them...?
2
Well, in Sweden they recycle the building materials.
19:13
you know, germany does have quite a few coal power plants
@El'endiaStarman Yeah, I guess :-)
@Adám Dismantling the old one board by board to build a new one?

I mean, I haven't talked here since last decade!

Hey wait a second...
@Jono2906 It's not UTC midnight yet, so Stack Exchange disagrees.
@wizzwizz4 well then. I'm from the future!
Plus, it's 4 minutes ’till the UTC hour anyway.
@Jono2906 Oh, come on. You know what happened last time we got time travel involved.
@wizzwizz4 I don't.
21:57
It must still be in your future.
Ah, I see.
The joys of being UTC+11

Not again.

Fixed a single comma
You've corrupted the timeline!
@wizzwizz4 You're welcome!
We'll have to write a T-SQL query to fix this, and I do not want to be the one to do that.
Last time I had to write T-SQL, I hung the database server.
2
@wizzwizz4 well done.
22:07
The only one fast enough to fix it before catastrophe was Jon Skeet, but he had to reimplement the entire stack in C♯ in order to get it done in time.
Not doing that again.
@wizzwizz4 The only thing I know about T-SQL is from this and the corresponding comments.
@flawr That is insane. It's worse than the GoL Tetris, because at least building Conway's CPU is useful for something.
haha
Did I just call it Conway's CPU? I think reading Doc Future might've permanently damaged my ability not to invent dramatic pseudo-mythological proper noun phrases of the form Name's Thing.
CMP: What's the best book?
22:31
@wizzwizz4 what kind of book?
The Bible.
@flawr Fiction, or K&R.
@wizzwizz4 what is K&R?
@flawr The definitive book on C.
eeek
22:33
You give it to new C programmers as a hilarious prank, because the language has changed just enough since it was written that it's subtly wrong.
They'll learn all of the most widespread bad practices from the founders themselves.
Like functions without return types specified defaulting to int.
Half the C golfing tricks come from that book.
hehe
@wizzwizz4 are comics ok too?
@flawr Yeah. What do you have in mind?
@wizzwizz4 Gaston Lagaffe
I know just enough French to know where the jokes are, but not quite enough to enjoy them. ☹
Guess I'll just have to learn another language.
Or buy a dictionary.
I'm sure there are translations.
What is your native language?
22:42
Lisp.
But I know some English too.
But you can lisp in English.
Trouble is, they renamed him in the English translations.
In fact, English requires a lisp in certain words.
@Adám Really? Which?
@wizzwizz4 Think!
22:44
@Adám No it doesn't!
> When a fronted lisp does not have a sibilant quality, due to placing the lack of a grooved articulation, the IPA transcription would be [θ, ð] or variants thereof.
Actually, lisp is called lithp, but we adopted the spelling from the lispers.
Oh, I see.
I still think it was very evil towards people with a certain speech impediment to call that impediment a lisp.
@Adám Huh. That is not what I was thinking of. I didn't know “lisp” had a technical linguistic term.
23:13

Hey, so does anyone have any tips for writing a successful KOTH?
do you have anything specific in mind?
I'm mainly asking in regards to my sandbox suggestion. I only posted it yesterday, but I kinda want a more general idea of where I'll be heading.
I have the impression they usually require a lot of planning, and usually benefit from extensive testing.
@Jono2906 can you share a link?
@Riker I'm from the future and I've come to tell you that nothing changed.
darn
I'll be honest - I popped in to send you a reddit link
but then I realized the whole thread is tagged nsfw, and I thought better :)
23:24
:D
aren't we "friends" on reddit?
hm, true I believe
time to use the new chat feature!
chat???
yeah admins are trying to make it an actual „social media“ so we'll see

(i stil luse old reddit btw)

ah, I didn't bother with old, new redesign is neutral enough IMO that I'll just go to the currently supported version

Speaking of social media, is anybody working with ActivityPub?
