12:00 AM
yea
why not use × for the list thingy

Another annoying thing is that x isn't even the right list repeat half the time.

and x for multiplication

@NoahCristino because Jelly

Most of the time you need

_
is subtraction
whyyyyy

12:00 AM
@NoahCristino whenever you ask "Why this atom?" that answer is always "Because Jelly". And yes that's right.

because - is literal -1

@NoahCristino nice

I get it

12:01 AM
@NoahCristino another one?

I wanna figure out +²
first
it's add and power of 2
you could also do +*2

@NoahCristino you could, but Jelly is about doing programs as short as possible

yea
Next?

@NoahCristino what is your native programming language?

Mostly python

12:03 AM
Huh. Any time now, the queries will run and overrule caching and my Blue Circle Ability will be enabled.

but I use a lot of different ones

@NoahCristino good. Jelly was wwritten in Python, so it can help

@NoahCristino try dividing 2 numbers

I also use c#, and php

12:03 AM
@NoahCristino You can exec python code in Jelly

That doesn't necessarily help though. I don't know; I didn't find my knowledge of Python to help me learn Jelly.

@StepHen don't even go there

XD

I can't even remember how Leaky and Erik first taught me... :P

12:04 AM
brb

I don't even have a native language anymore >_>

Anyway, I'm not going to get carried away with stories of that. I should look back to find some teaching tips though since they were pretty awesome teachers :D

@HyperNeutrino the way I starting teaching xcoder was by working through the easy challenges sheet they gave us

Ah I see.
Yeah practice is really the only real way to learn Jelly.

Let him take over once he got it

12:05 AM
@MDXF I hope you're not doing more active-post flooding...
Why are all 4 things you modified about throwing errors xD

@HyperNeutrino I'm not :P unless editing 5 or 6 counts

omg, 6 posts in 5 minutes

I stopped :P

I can't spel;
I'm leaving ^ as it is

@MDXF Are you just doing tag edits?

12:06 AM
@HyperNeutrino yes

Fun fact: You have enough reputation to do tag-edits without bumping the post. Just go down to the tags and click the "edit tags" button to the right of the tags ಠ_ಠ

I went into Hypertraining, saw Noah in the active users and was wondering when he got accepted :P

@HyperNeutrino That's exactly what I'm doing

@HyperNeutrino it still bumps them

wait actually ಠ_ಠ the system must be borked then
or it does bump them.
strange. I don't remember it bumping a post that I tag-edited once a while back

12:07 AM
It bumps them, apparently

never mind then :P

brb
@cairdcoinheringaahing you know what that does right xD (will read response when I return)

@HyperNeutrino it just ignores the

Hm, question: If I have a highly upvoted answer on a question, then a tag gets added to it, would I potentially get a bronze badge in that tag?

12:10 AM
@MDXF maybe, but don't try it

@cairdcoinheringaahing I wasn't going to
I'm just curious

I'll flag the edit if you get the gold badge

@cairdcoinheringaahing I'm not creating that tag :P
Just the 'cause it's relevant to about 20 questions
But I've paused for now so that I don't flood the active page

@MDXF I remember when was created. Programmer5000 edited all 6 questions in about a minute and got yelled at in chat :P

@MDXF I think not. I'm not absolutely sure though.
I know that a person with a gold tag badge can't edit the question to have their tag and then hammer it because that allows abuse.
Hey I can start getting rep again!

12:22 AM
Another 360 rep from segfaults. *sigh*
I hate voters on this site

@MDXF you shouldn't feel so bad for yourself. How many times have you capped?

Final feedback?
wait what

@cairdcoinheringaahing Hm... Once from that segfault, five times from the other one, 10 times total

@MDXF I've capped twice. Once was 2 days ago. And that's from writing challenges. You've got it good

I've capped 7 times lol

12:25 AM
I've capped a few times
I think I capped twice from covfefe
and once from an answer I got a bounty on but barely any votes

@DestructibleLemon all it takes is one memeable post :P

Posting my sandbox post soon, unless someone's reading it right now

@HyperNeutrino go for it

oplz no I just stumbled across an NSFW NAA Puzzling.SE post

@HyperNeutrino I can haz link?

12:28 AM
no

why would you want one

Anyone up for codenames?

Why would I link something that's NSFW into a place with permanent transcripts?
@WheatWizard sure

@DestructibleLemon I like puzzles

12:30 AM
Yeah but it's not even the right solution >.<

NAA: not an answer

Does anyone actually understand Codenames?

You can tag along and watch if you'd like

@HyperNeutrino no I have sleep Sandboxing to do

ah ok
ok so apparently people didn't like my box challenge ;_;

@HyperNeutrino If I'm running a CnR, where the cracks happen in comments, how do I reward the winner?

Bounties

@HyperNeutrino yeah, I suppose that's the best way

serially upvote them how about you stick to bounties

12:33 AM
If you get 200 rep, but put a 50 bounty on, do you still repcap?

@cairdcoinheringaahing nope
bounties are not subject to being capped
otherwise bounties over +200 would be pointless xD

@HyperNeutrino as in you give the bounty

I'm waiting to see if the downvoter is going to comment...
@cairdcoinheringaahing oh well if you reach 200 rep and then give a bounty it will count as having capped, but you'll cap at 150 rep.
ew now my rep is not a nice round number

@HyperNeutrino SE be weird

12:35 AM
@HyperNeutrino go downvote someone

...
I could accept an answer and bump it to a nice round number, or I could just not care
I doubt the downvoter will comment.

@HyperNeutrino you're on 8501

?
I thought I was 8503
only explanation: more downvote
Oh FFS someone downvoted one of my top answers posted about 4 months ago
I am really close to getting net rep lost today until I go active again
I'm beginning to doubt that my calculations of network reputation is accurate, unless caching can drag on for this long.

@HyperNeutrino is Billards on your github page?

@cairdcoinheringaahing I think so...

12:40 AM
@HyperNeutrino I can't find it

ok theoretically I'm at 10101 network rep right now

@HyperNeutrino 21?

@HyperNeutrino 10101 => 21 You're a new user then

@cairdcoinheringaahing oplz >.<

12:41 AM
@HyperNeutrino Welcome to PPCG!

@cairdcoinheringaahing Thanks!

@HyperNeutrino make sure to use the sandbox before posting questions!

@HyperNeutrino do you want to learn Jelly?

@Christopher can i haz link i do not kno what iz sandbox
@cairdcoinheringaahing sure! I mean, what's that?

@HyperNeutrino some crazy golfing language

12:43 AM

@cairdcoinheringaahing oh you mean the one Dennis made? I mean, sorry, I don't know anything about this place at all!
@Christopher Are you sure it's just the posts...? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I reckon the joke's dead now. RIP @HyperNeutrino

@HyperNeutrino No Sandbox is where I die

My starbait actually worked!

12:44 AM
You just realized?

@HyperNeutrino I'm too tired for this. Its 1:44 here :/

xD
:o Blue Circle Mode enabled :D

@HyperNeutrino must ... not ... flag ...

now, I don't think there are any active flags right now otherwise I suspect I'd see something.
@cairdcoinheringaahing lol

@HyperNeutrino now that we can annoy you with flags, everytime you say "lol" I should flag it. That'll stop you quickly :P

12:48 AM
Nah, I'll just flag you right back and get you suspended (•◡•) gg but no thanks. /s
:P
*lol

@HyperNeutrino ಠ_ಠ
You used it again ಠ_ಠ

Besides, if you flag something, you're going to end up summoning a bunch of people that you don't want to face when you can't explain the flag (•◡•) :P

@HyperNeutrino laser eyes?

yup
and every 10k/mod on the network at the time probably
and That REDACTED Guy

12:51 AM
@DJMcMayhem hi I haz question: where do blue circles show up for 10k users? I'm new to this xD

I disapprove

@cairdcoinheringaahing oplzwhy

@HyperNeutrino I disapprove of 10k rep. Users should be seen and not upvoted

sure brb serially downvoting every post of yours xD /s

@HyperNeutrino brb, getting you suspended /s

12:52 AM
brb, probably won't actually be back if I do get suspended :P

@HyperNeutrino I'm back
more jelly?

Hi. I'm with caird in Hypertraining right now, but I can pull him back over.

Hi.
@NoahCristino have you tried dividing 2 numbers?

@NoahCristino what have you got?

1:01 AM
÷

@NoahCristino good. How about integer division?

@cairdcoinheringaahing If you ask VB, it's \ (why I don't know)

@NoahCristino good. Should we start moving on to non-builtin answers?

sure
xD

1:02 AM
@NoahCristino is prime?

still builtin >.<

@StepHen builtin

I dunno Jelly xD

All jelly answers are like <=8bytes

Given two numbers, determine a times b squared

1:03 AM
ok

@HyperNeutrino what's squared's priority?
or you need parens
(a*b)^2 or a*(b^2)

((a) times ((b) (squared)))

*½ doesn't workkkk

That's square-root...

oh
I read that wrong

1:05 AM
rip

6 messages moved to Trash

@trichoplax more meme hate? Idc, just wondering

@cairdcoinheringaahing The moderators of PPCG decided together to delete the memes page in hopes that it would bring an end to some memes that had been kept alive too long by the meta post. Locking it stopped new problems but didn't eliminate the old problems. Deleting it was meant to eliminate some of these problems but trying to stop the memes from dying is not a good idea.

@cairdcoinheringaahing No hate, just removing noise. Retrospectively so no kicks this time

@trichoplax ok, just wondering
@HyperNeutrino I got 4 bytes for the times square problem, you?

1:07 AM
...2?

@HyperNeutrino The top right of your avatar

@trichoplax oh, is that the trash room for all of SE?

never mind I tried that but I'm wrong.

@HyperNeutrino whats 5 * 6² according to your answer?

I tried ײ

1:08 AM
@StepHen There are many trash rooms. That's the one I happen to use

@NoahCristino what did that do?

but it doesn't workk

@trichoplax oh ok

I tried ײ but it's doing multiplication first.

1:09 AM
@NoahCristino @HyperNeutrino yeah operator precedence kills

What do I do?

@NoahCristino do you remember your first attempt at adding numbers?

I have 4 bytes

yes
oh
using ⁴?
and ³

@DJMcMayhem Like in a chat room it will appear or on my profile page?

1:12 AM
In a chat room

thanks

³×(⁴²) seems like it should work...

@NoahCristino my best advice is try it, and see if it works

@NoahCristino Try using 9 and 8 rather than 4 and 3. Each link takes in a left argument and a right arguments (which defaults to the left argument if there is no right argument), so rather than using command line arguments, access the arguments passed to the thingy
@NoahCristino brackets don't exist

it doesn't...
oh

1:13 AM
Think about it. Multiplication has one important property: commutativity. Swap the arguments.

Alright, cya! o/

@HyperNeutrino I'm doing GCSE english and I don't know what "commutativity" is :P

ಠ_ಠ it's like basic ok not so basic math stuff
It means that a + b == b + a

But can you prove that.

1:17 AM
@ATaco 5 + 4 = 4 + 5

@ATaco nope not smart enough

Is that consistent for all values of a and b?

Yes. Every value of (a, b) is (4, 5).

Oh

nvm I'm back

1:20 AM
hi

but what are left and right arguments?

First of all, are you familiar with the concept of nilads, monads, and dyads?

nope
I know nothing
except what you guys are teaching me
wait
nilads have no arguments
monads 1

Okay. So a nilad takes no arguments and gives an output. For example, 5 is a nilad because it evaluates to 5 with no arguments.

and dyalds 2

1:22 AM
yay you do know it! :D
so a nilad doesn't care about its arguments
a monad operates on its left argument
and a dyad uses both

ohhhhh
a*b^2
hmmmm
⁸×⁹²
same issue

@NoahCristino a good way to imagine the arguments x and y are : <nilad>, x<monad>, x<dyad>y, but Jelly puts x and y there for you

I have the same issue where it multiplies first
wait I have an idea
⁹²×⁸
I did it

@NoahCristino noice!

finally
you have another challenge?

1:26 AM
@NoahCristino given a fraction x/y with x and y as arguments, simplify it.
e.g. 6, 4 => 2, 3

ok
I don't even know how to do this in python lol
³÷⁴
converts to decimal...

@NoahCristino what can you remove from that?

Ik
the 3 and 4
but that's just division
now I have to convert back to a fraction
idk how

@NoahCristino let's handle it like this. Imagine you have a fraction 4/6

yea
2/3

1:30 AM
Now what do you do, first, to simplify it?

divide bottom
brb

@NoahCristino divide it by what?

I have ³ÆF⁴ÆF
so far
it gets the factors

You don't need that.
Think about how you would simplify a fraction normally.

1:35 AM
The proportion between the numerator and denominator remains the same.

divide until you can't
yes

You're making the numerator and denominator smaller, right?
And by a constant proportion

So, what operation are you applying to the num and denom?

division

1:36 AM
Yes.
brb

@HyperNeutrino Caching can drag on for a really long time BTW

but how do I figure out what to divide by?
@cairdcoinheringaahing

@Noah what do 4 and 6 have in common in factors?

@noah what do you mean?

1:39 AM
greatest common factor
³g⁴
is 2

@noah so what do you need to do?

divide both by ³g⁴

@noah or just divide by?

@Noah exactly.

1:41 AM
³÷g⁴÷g
returns .5
???

@Noah for what input?

@Noah this next bit is important. Jelly can apply commands to lists as well as single values, but it applies that function to each , called vectorisation e.g. 1+[1,2,3] will return [2,3,4].

³÷g,⁴÷g
returns [6, 6]

@noah so if we make the arguments into a list, we can vectorise over that list, right?

1:45 AM
³,⁴÷g
returns 1.5
³,⁴÷g

@NoahCristino because you have 2 characters that you don't need

oh
,÷g
yay
I gotta go now cya tomarrow
thx
I'll be on at like 12:30 est

@Noah well done! Bye, and as an FYI, if your posting code, you can wrap it in backticks (`) so that it looks nice
10.20 rather than 10.20

typeof NaN === "number"
true

<inception horn>

2:03 AM
Anything else need fixing before I post?

It would be great to find out where the Python intrepreter handles decoding of source files.
In particular, handling of control characters.
