how is a humorous piece about the languages used for challenges off-topic?
is there a meta-meta-meta i don't know about?
and reddit's programming challenges are meh
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ beats me
Usually Clang is fine as long as you know it's Clang
@wyldstallyns Because it's not just a blog or random message board. Meta is for discussing the site and/or asking questions about the site. Not a place to post random jokes.
What about Memes of PPCG?
I was hoping to kick off discussion of why people were using the languages they were using.
or make them reconsider
help i'm being repressed by teh establishment
@KritixiLithos Considering the ultimate fate of that post...?
16:09
@Geobits Memes was the best meta post. Now that we reopened the showcase, let's open and unlock Memes
@wyldstallyns There wasn't a hint of that in your post that I saw. If that's the intention, you should take a look at this one.
@KritixiLithos Good luck with that ;)
are you the geo that hung around in #esolangs?
Not that I know of. I rarely go by just geo.
@Geobits ahaha, I have two upvotes on my comment there
You found the two windows users! :P
16:21
Whoa this chat actually works with cVim \o/
tfw perl doesn't like passing multi-line strings as parameters
Aww, I just hit the daily vote limit on meta. Haven't done that in a while.
Downvote limit?
Nah. I downvote plenty on meta, but I have more upvotes than downvotes there.
see what you get
16:29
I only hit the limit today because I haven't been in the sandbox much lately and was catching up.
I still think it's dumb the way they do the "somewhere between 30 and 40" limit.
@Geobits what even was that post
I can't understand it
I honestly thought it was spam at first
tfw a simple explanation turns into an essay
Hello, I'm not really back,
but I'll be really back
After this year ends, I'll be back :D
@Geobits why are people even commenting on this with languages
the first comments didn't say anything about it being off-topic
Anyway, I need some help with Pokemon and legality
16:42
If it's about Sun or Moon I can't help.
If no one wants to help, well, at the very least I'd like to see where anyone does.
@Geobits It's about Emerald.
Nobody's going to know if they can help unless you ask the question ;)
While you were away, lots of things happened
@zyabin101 it's 8:43 AM, west coast time. almost everybody is at work or school, and hasn't given up on either for the day just yet
don't expect any help right now from TNB
changing my computer, my interests
16:44
Just ask the question? I'm curious now.
is my explanation of my answer to the skittles question too wordy
Also, I've been creating a tool-assisted playaround of Pokemon Emerald, would like to publish videos of it on a Google Site.
I'm not sure if it is fair use.
@Geobits ^^

and ^^
16:45
@zyabin101 that's perfectly legal, why wouldn't it be
Okay. Will be publishing right away. :)
taking videos of a game published publicly is ok
@zyabin101 AFAIK, Nintendo is very protective when it comes to speedrunning videos, etc. Tons have been taken off of youtube, etc. In the end it doesn't actually matter whether it is fair use or not unless you go to court. What happens is that Nintendo complains, Google takes it down, and it's up to you to convince them to put it back up.
@zyabin101 assuming tool-assisted doesn't mean modded beyond the limits, it means tool-assisted as in a TAS, you should be fine
It is like a TAS.
16:47
@Geobits if you know more than I do, that's fine, @zyabin101 listen to him
@zyabin101 then I'd say publish it, if nintendo gets around to complaining, oh well. they may or may not
You can find articles like this talking specifically about Nintendo. Other companies have different stances on it.
Okay. :)
You can always post them, like Easterly said. But when/if they get taken down, there's not a whole lot the average person can do. So I wouldn't try to make a livelihood out of it.
That being said, they're very unlikely to actually sue you. It's much easier and cleaner for them to just have Google take them down.
Okay. :/
So basically, it's okay until Nintendo/Game Freak/Creatures Inc. say it's not okay.
yeah, so don't put too much hope in it
also probably best to put it on a google site so if nintendo wants it down, it can go down fast. less hassle than them contacting you
16:52
Something like that. Or until someone actually has the backing to sue companies over this sort of thing and set a precedent. I'm not holding my breath for that though.
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Yeah, I got a cease-and-desist from Nintendo, but it was for links on other sites. The Google-hosted stuff was taken down much faster.
I think speedrunning the game is fair use
nintendo doesn't
and they're who matter
Lots of people do. Like I said though, that only matters in court.
If speedrunning the game is illegal, then any gameplay on the game is illegal, and it's a bit stupid... ?
Schrödinger's Law -- it is both legal and illegal until there's a court case.

16:58
Nintendo takes a harder stance on tool assisted speedruns:
> Nintendo encourages fan engagement on YouTube through the Nintendo Creators Program. Under the program, participants are granted a licence to use Nintendo's characters, games, and other intellectual property, subject to the Code of Conduct included with the agreement. However, please note that this Code of Conduct prohibits you, among other things, from posting any content using unauthorised software or copies of games.
> This includes videos featuring tool-assisted speedruns, which require making a copy of a game's ROM file, and running the copied ROM through an emulator.
So it's not just "any gameplay is illegal".
IIRC having a copy of a rom on a computer is legal if you have the rom physically
@TuxCopter Maybe.
@TuxCopter That's often quoted but not true
@TuxCopter see above, regarding Schrödinger
At least not by Nintendo's eula stuff
17:01
Either way, modifying that copy is different. You can do that for yourself (maybe), but then showing it off requires using their trademarked characters, etc, using a modified, unauthorized work.
And distributing that modified copy isn't even really a grey area.
Even patches?
Each company decides how hard a stance to take on it. As much as I love Nintendo and its games/consoles, their policy on stuff like this sucks.
Fan patches, provided they don't run afoul of the DMCA, should be legal. They may or may not be against the EULA, but the legality of EULAs hasn't been fully vetted yet, either.
Obviously I'm only talking about USA law, and IANAL, etc.
Anonymous
Distributing patches is legal, but distributing patched/hacked ROMs typically is considered not to be legal
17:06
can your project be adapted for the new Universe framework that includes licensing?
@TimmyD #TimmyD4Lawyer2016
@wyldstallyns hey, while you're here, what was that post on meta about?
nevermind i'm apparently an alien of some sort
it was deleted and i'm not fussing
I don't care, now that it's been nuked, I just want to know what it originally meant
a joke and a conversation starter
here's the AI Universe if anyone hasn't seen it openai.com/blog/universe
17:08
@Geobits I agree.
@wyldstallyns Yeah, it's pretty impressive. I've got it marked to look at more later when I have the time.
i think the script kiddies are going to outdo BMW in driving AI
"script kiddies"?
you can stumble across some pretty neat stuff without knowing what you're doing
@wyldstallyns rip I have Windows
And I don't think my Linux machine would run any of these games
17:11
they run them
you get API and VNC
@wyldstallyns That's not what script kiddie means.
Too bad I can't plug it into my PS4. I'd like to see how well it can drive compared to the lousy B-spec guys in GT6.
@mınxomaτ get off my lawn
I would like to see a decent AI for Minecraft
"script kiddie" is a lulz cut & paster
17:12
> Zachtronics
brb making SHENZHEN I/O AI
@wyldstallyns In a security context, not a general programming one.
@TuxCopter With what goal? It's fairly open-ended.
@Geobits survive
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
you can't lulz your way into a word processor, but you can lulz your way into a working command & conquer AI
@TuxCopter AI digs 1x1x2 hole in nearest hill, places dirt blocks outside. Wins.
17:13
.-.
@TimmyD Loses.
sheer blocks travelled seems like an easy metric
or drop the AI into a village and grade on number of villagers
anyway, booting my linux machine atm to test this
number of seconds survived in a skeleton spawner cave
Easy: Open the menu and click the "Peaceful" option.

17:15
-.-
local maxima ftw
Or better yet, change gamemode to creative :P
1) If the AI doesn't put a torch, it will spawn creeper, skeleton, zombie... They will kill the AI.
@zyabin101 I didn't think things could spawn on a player's exact location. Isn't there a buffer space?
2) If the AI does put a torch, the hideout will still be detected by a nearby user.
(A real user, to be exact.)
17:16
@TimmyD make it 4*4*2, enough space for a little farm
@zyabin101 you close it up silly
@Geobits yeah, 16 blocks
@mbomb007 congrats!
New objective function idea: amount of fun the AI is having.
Fun is measured by self-reporting.
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Until you run out of blocks, in which case the hideout is still open, the AI somehow stuck, and dead when night comes. See 1).
An interesting AI goal would be something like "skeleton murderer". Fitness is based on the number of bone items in inventory. Getting it to figure out how to get the first one would be a bit problematic though.
> minecraft
> run out of blocks
does anybody seriously want to get into this? i'll work on getting an environment up.
17:19
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ If that's the only function of the AI.
step 1: kill 1 pig
You have to dig out a space to hide in, and you only need one block to cover it up. How could you run out of blocks at all?
oh true, you can just dig a hole in the ground and hop in
halp how to connect a Wifi network in Linux
step 2: go into hole at sunset
17:20
I use i3 and idk how to connect because no buttons
step 3: at day, repeat from step 1
@TuxCopter ignores
@TuxCopter google.com/…
@zyabin101 no need to be rude
then unignores due to them being our friend
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I'm not. o-o ^
17:21
> Explicit results removed with Safe Search
@TuxCopter iwconfig
@KritixiLithos lol
> One way is to install Network Manager and nm-applet and the stuff required to get notifications/menu in whatever tray bar you are using.
> The other way is to stick with Arch base software to connect, which provide all functionality. In particular, have a look at Arch Wiki page on netctl. You can run netctl from any terminal, and if you download dialog package you can also use wifi-menu to connect with a graphical prompt.
@TuxCopter
Yes but I can't install anything
why not?
and then use the second option
Because no connection >_>
17:22
@zyabin101 How would you run out of blocks? If you're digging straight down, dig down 3 blocks. Place one block above you. You're now in a 1x1x2 hole with 2 blocks in your inventory.
Guess you're gonna have to type in the source code of netctl manually.
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ The base system is Ubunut
Not Arch
@feersum Except they might not have the gcc required to compile netctl.
If it's a standard Ubuntu install, then just click the network manager icon in the system tray/bar.
17:24
It's installed by default.
@zyabin101 halp man page is over 9000 lines long how to use it
@TuxCopter google it silly helicopter

Q: questions and answers in codegolf are not complete

RosLuPFunctions without names (anonymous functions); function without error code or without one little analysis on error in input or in output or in the fiction result: Can not be complete at last for me... If for you it is all ok I have nothing else to say but I not change my opinion... Good Evening

@MartinEnder I'm fairly sure the intent was not to start a constructive discussion.
then why make a meta post in the first place
It feels good to vent sometimes :P
17:36
i think he's saying the rules are too laxly enforced to be fair
@NewMetaPosts is this based on what I said yesterday night? ಠ_ಠ
What do you said yesterday?
@wyldstallyns No, I've been having discussoins with them for a few days, and I'm pretty sure they think that unnamed functions should be disallowed and every answer should handle every possible (even invalid) input.
@TuxCopter chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/240?m=33923679#33923679 (this is here to prevent a onebox)
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I'm pretty sure they're aware of the consensus. The point of the question is that they don't agree with the consensus.
17:38
@betseg Because most golflangs have inmplicit input/output
@MartinEnder yeah, but just in case
@TuxCopter this is also about anonymous functions and lambdas
@NewMetaPosts Did this person just run their native language through google translate and post it
Probably
@betseg you can just put a dot if you want, to stop the onebox
17:40
@GabrielBenamy Probably
@GabrielBenamy TBF, many perfectly smart people are really bad at grammar on the internet.
Also many perfectly smart people don't speak English.
such as marky markov
I'm fairly sure this user doesn't natively speak English. This isn't their first post, and they all have the same look.
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ people sometimes ask why it didn't onebox etc
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Saying Marky is "perfectly smart" is a stretch even for me :P
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Marky markov is smart? TIL
should we vtc as unclear? or dupe of one of the meta consensusi already existing?
@TuxCopter it was a joke
You fell for 2 ironical messages in this week. Calm down mate.
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ ik
17:42
Hmm. Maybe that's a task for the Universe AI. Let it loose on an SE site with the goal to maximize rep >_>
Or a chat room to maximize stars <_<
it would quickly start mimicing dennis for the first one, and alex for the second one
or maybe you for the second goal
@Geobits does it have the ability to make socks
I certainly hope not. That's how you get robot overlords.
Suddenly, I'm thinking about Person of Interest.

it's just that it beats mine handily :P

@ais523 Man, you're on a roll so far this month... You're the one person who's earned more rep than I have :P
I've earned zero rep today, though, somehow
@ais523 Your rep is already more than mine :)
17:57
which is strange, I often hit 200 by mistake
I guess there's still a while left
but sometimes I get online for the day and find that I'm at 200 already
mostly from an answer to an easy challenge that takes off for some reason
(and half the time that answer seems to be 9; it's both of my two most-upvoted answers)
hahaha
I've had 4 answers with a score of 14+ posted in the last week, one of them with 32, which explains most of my rep
I don't know anything about linux, sorry
