@feersum You could probably replace gcc by a script which checks if any of its arguments end in .cpp and redirects to g++ in this case or gcc otherwise.

@Zgarb I think even verbose languages will have to implement something better than the naive algorithm to be competitive.
the naive algorithm gives a query complexity of around 500k, whereas taking Log 2 of each permutation length would give a score around 30k. I doubt implementing the better algorithm will cost 470k bytes ;)
 
@MartinBüttner The average query complexity will be 100 for the naive case, and around 7 for the optimal algorithm.

I'm guessing that a bonus of 93 bytes is not quite enough for the optimal algorithm in, say, Python. On the other hand, I'm not very good at golfing Python, so I may be wrong.
 
I suppose for the log n algorithm you use bit vectors like [1,1,1,1,0,0,0,0], [1,1,0,0,1,1,0,0], [1,0,1,0,1,0,1,0]?
 
Exactly.
An alternative scoring method could be something like byte count * average(1 + query complexity / permutation length). The multiplier is always between 1 and 2 (unless your solution is stupid), and doesn't depend so much on the lengths of the permutations.
But it's less intuitive.

Oh man. I just got one of those "thank-you-for-your-help"s that really makes you feel like a dummy. The kind where you spend two hours investigating only to come up with an answer you really thought was right until they said thank you and then you just know from their tone of voice that you didn't help at all.

We could have 500 active mods and I would still complain if the moderation was poor. We could have 1 inactive mod and I wouldn't complain if the moderation was good. Presence isn't much of an issue to me.
This community moderates itself quite well IMO
Ugh. Someone at our company years ago wrote their own version of parameterized SQL statements. Needless to say, I can't stand using an internal library to do something that exists in standard lib.
 
Hm, thinking about it, I'm not really sure why I added the "I don't care" option to that meta poll... those who don't care can simply not vote.
It would have even made more sense as an "I don't want consistency, choose randomly" option

Because simply not caring sort of implies that you're not opposed to the decision being made either way. But I guess it's nice to be able to see how many people don't care to see if it's worth the trouble.
