Q: Implement a 2-player version of 1D Chess

QuadruplayThe game is played on a 1x8 board with the following setup: KNR..rnk White's pieces are on the left, while black's pieces are on the right. The king (K) can move 1 space in any direction. The knight (N) can jump 2 spaces in any direction, regardless of bordering pieces. The rook (R) can move any...

@DLosc I'd edit in the new answer but leave the old one in

@emanresuA yep
just reminding myself to switch it to tnb if tst stays frozen :P

@cairdcoinheringaahing user deleted it, put it in the sandbox, and reposted it (i assume they don't know about undeleting)

I: Why HTML don't support `<div />`, but require `<div></div>`?
GPT: Ah, that's a good question! HTML is based on SGML, and in SGML, elements must have both opening and closing tags. The `<div></div>` format is used to clearly define the start and end of the `<div>` element. If you want to know more technical details, feel free to ask!

Correct?

5:49 AM
1) HTML4 was based on SGML but HTML5 is not 2) <div /> is valid XHTML 3) <tag /> is valid HTML5 but only when tag is a "void element", so <div /> is not valid because div is not a void element

Oh I misread

lol I was gonna say, isn't that just... chess

Yes! :)
It's fun to analyse

Q: Swifty Argument Labels

macOSisthebestOS For the purpose of this challenge, arguments are things you pass to a function at the call site, while parameters are what the function uses in its implementation. Or, more succinctly: arguments = external, parameters = internal. While there are several modern languages that have support for a...

G. CiardiniGiven a non-empty string containing only printable ASCII (codepoints 0x20 to 0x7E), write the shortest program or function that map the key to its value. Inside the string the key will always have a value and vice-versa. How the key is made: Start with an opening parenthesis ( Contains letters a...

what is it with random advertisers going on a code golf site to push their products?
and then posting them as questions?

I think the main purpose is for SEO

but do they not go "wait. this site is completely irrelevant and made by a big company. they'll probably delete this after 5 minutes."

@Someone They probably automatically post on random sites
Noone specifically chose code golf

glad to see it get vaporized instantly, though

We need more powerfull lasers

4:41 PM
what frequency?

ultraviolet

do gt emitters go that high?
what color lens would you like?

I know xray lasers exist so I assume UV must be possible, they might use a different technique though. I know very little about how lasers work so I'm just guessing

idk
I tried to make a gregtech reference (and failed)
the laser engraver uses colored lenses to engrave things
that's it. that's the reference.

I know it shouldn't surprise me but the limits of the things government/party officials can get away with saying is insane (see, e.g., the quotes in this article)
Like holocaust denialism, gleefully calling for the execution of a former president, insulting victims of mass gun violence...

6:16 PM
@RydwolfPrograms the republican part seems to be splitting in 2

Yeah definitely, that's been a trend since around 2016

@Seggan it would be great if that happened! But sadly it seems that really the whole party is becoming Trump
I wonder if they will try to arrange another trump to be their presidential candidate after donald has gone

Parties can't really split in a presidential democracy, at least not without being at a massive disadvantage. That's why a parliamentary system is superior

@Simd I see three options: either they argue the 22nd amendment is invalid for some reason and Trump can have a third term, or they go with one of the MAGA-leaning primary competitors/possible VPs, or they don't bother with the legal routes and just do another Jan 6th
Alternatively Trump might die, he is getting pretty old (and murderable)

he has got > 50% chance of living another 10 years according to flowingdata.com/2015/09/23/years-you-have-left-to-live-probably

6:36 PM
@mousetail the democratic party had split before the civil war
theres precedent

@Neil got around to doing the Rook, need to output the final score now

jan
I was going to say I wish someone here knew a brainfuck compiler so i can tell them about my genious optimization idea

ooh I'd like to hear it

6:54 PM
@Seggan There wasn't as much a "sports" mentality back then

Also, it, uh, didn't work out very well for them. And almost every time since, a party that splits goes on to lose the presidency. So if your only goal is winning, splitting the party is considered political suicide. (Though Trump & co are fond of throwing out all the conventional political wisdom, so who knows.)

jan
so some brainfuck compilers i've read about optimize multiplication loops like [->++<] or like [->++>++>+++++<<<] and some even specifically optimize these "gliders" +[-<+]- ++[--<++]-- , the former by just multiplying the number, the latter by only looking where the marker is, not doing all this inc/dec stuff inbetween.

While Trump&Co. may be willing to split up, the other half is likely willing to compromise to just about anything to keep the party together since they are not as stupid

jan
7:11 PM
so if a glider does something that basically no one ever does, which is modify the cell, and even worse, modify adjacent cells as well, we can just add up the changes for all the cells between where it starts and stops doing this, because bla bla 111111111 times 213 is 23666666643

7:22 PM
any C++ gurus in?
I can't get my code to compile bpa.st/GKDA :(
I get rangecount.cpp:27:18: error: ‘iota’ is not a member of ‘std::ranges’; did you mean ‘std::ranges::views::iota’? but changing that doesn't help either

7:36 PM
what are you trying to do with the iota anyway?

it is mean to is initialize the sorted_is vector with a sequence of consecutive integers starting from 0.

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

3-1-4-One-FiveSwingin' Four Operations! Before, I found this song which has no meaning other than to combine all the consonants and vowels in the English alphabet. This challenge is similar, however, instead of outputting the song, your programs should output a modification which is basically addition, subtrac...

@Neil the problem is that I am using g++ 12 I think. I don't have g++ 13
@Neil std::iota(std::begin(sorted_is), std::end(sorted_is), 0); is the answer apparently

@Simd yeah and don't forget to #include <numeric>

7:53 PM
@Neil yes, thanks. C++ is a mystery to me :)
I wonder if I should forget it and learn rust.
Will I be happier if I do that?

@Neil well, program works at least, 340 bytes seems a lot though

is this 1d chess?
