Q: AoCG2021 Day 15: Leapfrog Santa

BubblerPart of Advent of Code Golf 2021 event. See the linked meta post for details. The story continues from AoC2015 Day 3, Part 2. This challenge was kindly contributed by Wheat Wizard (Grain Ghost). Santa is delivering presents to an infinite two-dimensional grid of houses each 1 unit apart. The del...

Someone was running an instance right?
I wasn't
Oh shoot, I need to go fix that now that I'm home
Brrb

Be right right back

it's always brb, never blb
like you never hear anyone say "be left back"
smtc discrimination against left handed people /s

When I travel, one of the things I need to take tends to be left back home.

and then students will have reason to play on class
I am code-golfing

dah frick I just discovered one major stumbling block when setting up github sponsors

Honestly it does look like a great game for early-age CS education
or not

@lyxal they want me to fill out a tax form of all things. Idk how I feel about that - it means I won't be able to use github to commit tax evasion ;p

12:22 AM
I haven't touched anything, so uh
maybe I'm out of date?
@redwolf do you have unpushed changes

Some, yeah, why?
The reason there's two messages is because I just started up my copy
It's cool, you can actually watch the attempted Log4shell requests coming in in the nginx access log
Unfortunately my server was off for like 24h straight for maintainance (ie I woke up late and didn't have time to fix it before going to school), so I missed the biggest wave
I'm probably going to buy some new SSDs for my server
TFW your server's hard drives cost three times more than the server

@RedwolfPrograms because status command works
yet it just doesn't report incoming posts

Oh weird
Hmm, maybe I could look at the log files to see if anything weird occured
But I'm rewriting the whole thing right now, so it doesn't really matter that much if we discover a bug rn

12:38 AM
oh lol

12:48 AM
Fun trick: If you don't know the reason something can fail at one of two different places, just make the error messages random strings of digits. People will assume those mean something.

The Microsoft Windows method

Sandbox posts last active a week ago: Radiate a prime checker into a sum program

@pxeger Really? I thought the Windows way was to just say "Oops something crashed :(" and give no further information :P

@user after using win11 for a while now, would you recommend it?

1:15 AM
Yeah

You haven't found any issues with it yet?

Disclaimer: I've been using it for days, not months, so I'd suggest backing stuff up before installing, installing it, and keeping track of how long it's been since you installed it (because you can go back to Windows 10 up to 10 days after installing Windows 11, but after that you'll need a clean install or something)

because I'm considering upgrading, but I don't want to screw over my computer

I haven't found any issues yet, no, but it depends on which apps you use
I've been using Chrome, Vivaldi, VS Code, IntelliJ, Discord, Android Studio, and TexStudio. idk what'll happen with other stuff though
There's supposedly performance improvements or something in Windows 11 too, but it's not significant enough for a normal user like me to notice
Solid 9.8 on the UI though

@user How do you put the task bar on the left?

1:20 AM
I think you just right click on the taskbar and click on Taskbar settings?

CMQ: What's the close-to-bare minimum functionality you'd expect from an SE chat library?
E.g., does starring need to be handled?

starring messages

At the bottom is an expanding thing called Taskbar behaviors, and inside that is a field for Taskbar alignment with a dropdown containing "Left" and "Center"
I've somehow already gotten used to the centered taskbar, though, it looks so weird on the left

I'm used to a centered taskbar
Chromebook gang :p

1:22 AM
@user No, I meant to make it vertical along the left side of the screen.

@Adám I have no idea if that's possible

@user Has been since Win95

Apparently it is possible through regedit
Yeah, just looked it up lol

Screenshot or it didn't happen.

Article for other lazy people
@Adám I'm still working on it, gimme some time :P

1:25 AM
@user note to anybody who plays any games - i've heard from a couple friends it breaks some stuff for no apparent reason for various game launchers, at least steam and battle.net, no clue why but its safer to not install if you have a bunch of games probably

@user why for lazy people?

Because lazy people like me don't want to google stuff :P

@user How do you initially show all options on the context menu instead of having to click "Show more options?"

Okay, this article says it's kinda broken, so I'm not going to bother moving my taskbar until a more brave soul verifies it works nicely

So we're down to what 8/10 on the UI?

1:28 AM
> If you’d like to try moving your taskbar to the left or right side of your screen, we’ll show you how—even though it’s broken and none of the icons will show up properly.

@Adám Sorry, I'm not sure I understand. Options on what?

unclear if this counts as even 'on the side'

Try right-clicking on a file in Explorer.

if its not even functional

@Adám Nah, 9.8 because I don't want to put it on the left anyway
:P
@Adám Hmm, that is a problem, lemme go check

1:29 AM
@Riker I guess you could hide it and chose a background image that has it on the left or right. Voilà.

@Adám lol

Imagine using your taskbar at all

I do all the time.

This post made by Win key and Alt+Tab gang

Way slower than clicking when you have lots of windows open.

1:30 AM
Hiding the taskbar is nice, but it's annoying to not be able to see notifications
@Adám True, and having lots of windows open is the whole point of having Windows :P

Wait, doesn't the taskbar auto-temporarily-unhide itself for notifications like Win10's does‽

CMP: How many windows do you normally have open? (including multiple windows in the same browser or something)
@Adám I think it does, yeah, but it goes away after, I think
Also, I need the clock so I don't waste too much time on stuff

@user i permanently have 3 open - a single firefox window, spotify, and discord. often I have a 4th one, another firefox profile for my school account

Is your other FF a different profile altogether or a different container?

@user Oh right. How do I enable showing the calendar by clicking on the clock (as I've been able to do for decades)?

1:33 AM
dunno about 'avg' but it's probably around there. coding adds 2 (notepad++/vscode & terminal/wsl), homework adds one (texmaker normally)

@user How do I hide start menu recommendations and show lots more pinned apps?

@user diff profile, unclear what you mean by container (window?) used bc different google accts & such

@user I currently have 15, but I'm off from work. I often have more than double that.

@Adám That doesn't happen by default for you? It does for me
@Adám I'm not sure, I'm not a Windows 11 expert lol

@user (you can't)

1:35 AM
@Riker Firefox has this nice thing called multi-account containers where you kinda have the same "profile", but the cookies in each container are separate so you can log in to the same site with different accounts in each container and stuff

@user How do show task bar labels?

Ah, I didn't realize these were rhetorical questions :P

@user ah. i remember seeing its advert about them. i see no point over profiles for my personal use

They are all intended to inform you and others that Win11's UI is definitely not 9.8/10

i have to gtg now.

1:37 AM
ok

See I don't use any of those, so it's only dropped to like 8/10 or 9/10 for me :P
Hopefully, all of that will be patched soon

The only substantial UI "improvement" I know of in Win11 is the return (hence the scare quotes) of rounded corners. I've been mourning those since Win7.

I probably rushed downloading Windows 11, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ it's not hurting me yet
@Adám Ooh yeah, I loved Windows 7, although I'm not sure if it's because the OS was good or because I just had good memories with an old laptop

At its launch, it was way better than Win10 was at its launch. It was basically what Vista should have been.

What was wrong with Windows 10 when it launched? Underdeveloped like 11?

1:40 AM
However, Win10 has slowly been catching up with many of the things it was missing from 7. (Let's not mention the abomination then was between them.)
@user Yeah, and start menu was all kinds of broken. Like it would refuse to show more than a very small number of installed applications. And what was previously file handles you could drag into email clients etc, was replaces by shortcuts (you'd end up trying to email .lnk files!)

oof

Also, when Win10 was launched, you were unable to prevent update reboots for more than a few hours (not enough to cover a work day), so you'd have no choice but to have your PC reboot in the middle of work. Win7 always allowed full flexibility. Much later, Microsoft allowed more and more flexibility, with much fanfare, of course.

I remember the school computers at middle school running some version of Windows where you could see all your apps as tiles, at once. That was a nice feature, however terrible the rest of the computer was. Don't remember which version that was though
@Adám Ah, the Calvin way
Lower your standards so no one expects anything of you, then do one tiny thing and everyone showers you with praise :P

Also, Win10's stickynotes was vastly inferiour (to the point of being unusable) compared to Win7's. Microsoft did fix some issues over the years though. Still SLOW.

Hmm, 10 was slower than 7?
Was this on the same laptop ?
@RedwolfPrograms Some say Java is Turing complete, but few have been able to program effectively in it...

1:47 AM
No, I mean Win10's stickynotes was way slower on a much faster laptop than Win7's stickynotes were on a much slower laptop.

Weird

@RedwolfPrograms Of course it is, because it can execute arbitrary code.

I've never bothered using any of the preinstalled Microsoft productivity apps, I should maybe try them out

@user How do I customise which icons are shown in the system trays (and which ones are confined to the expand menu)?

Alright, alright, we get it :P

1:50 AM
;-)
I'm staying on Win10 for now. At least until MS has fixed some of the worst issues.

Ignorance is bliss, you just spoiled that for me

I stayed on Win7 until its EoL too.

I've been going my whole life without these fancy customizations, and now I want them but 11 won't give them to me

You can still roll back to Win10 no?

@Adám I hear you can still upgrade to Windows 10 because the upgrade tool has some kind of benign bug that makes it still work?

1:51 AM
Yeah.

@Adám I don't remember if my 10 days are up, and after that time period, I'd have to reinstall it

I also heard from a MS representative how to clean-install Win7 using an upgrade licence.

well you can go check; win I > Windows Update > Update history > Recovery options > Go back

Will we haev 11 days to regret Win12?

Oh yay, I can go back
@Adám I thought Windows 11 was going to be the last last Windows update :P
Although they said that about Windows 10 too afair

1:53 AM
MS claimed 10 was.

@Adám I recently got access to a laptop with Windows 7 on it (also Ubuntu). I was pleased at first, but the thing's filled to the brim with old apps and outdated as hell. Would you like it? :P

Sure, but are you anywhere close to me?

Eh, I'll chuck it over the ocean

Win7 wasn't without issues upon launch. I got a new Toshiba laptop with Vista (eugh) and bought Win7 from MS. Upgrading almost bricked it.
I had to USB boot and flash BIOS.
But once properly installed, it was quite solid. BSoDs were rare.
MS decided not to have any B(lue)SoDs in Win11, so they made them B(lack)SoDs.

@RedwolfPrograms some kind of way to subscribe to and send raw event messages so if (e.g.) starring messages isn't fully implemented then I can implement it myself

2:02 AM
@RedwolfPrograms Getting the original markdown

2:27 AM
@RedwolfPrograms Rickroll checking, ping/reply tracking

@user Not possible currently
@emanresuA Part I is your job, part II is already implemented

Why not just checkRickroll(message)

@Adám Well, without LDAP

Which directly checks if there's a youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ or similar in the message
Then one that actually sends requests to the links and checks if they resolve to rickroll

@RedwolfPrograms Really? Doesn't the history show the original markdown?

2:36 AM
Oh yeah. That'd need a separate request though, and it's a rare enough requirement, so I'll leave that to the users

Ok. Conversation creation

@hyperneutrino !!!!!

time to hack into hyper's server
I actually could do that if vyxal.hyper was back up

Let's just use Log4shell

(Because 2.4.1 ACE)

That's horrifying :p

Oh wait...

@lyxal Did we publicly release that ACE?

@pxeger Can someone delete both of these messages

Just watched a speedrunner get 1/16384 luck on blaze rod drops
Except it's not the good 1 in 16384
It's the bad one

0/14? Wow that's unlucky

Well, 13 without getting one, then one on the 14th
I suppose it'd be "just" 1/8192 if you do >= instead of =

well then that's (14 choose 1)/16384, surely?

No?
Geometric makes way more sense here

you could also get 1 on the first, and then go 13 tries without getting one

3:23 AM
Yeah, but that's a totally different scenario

or 01000000000000

I'm just talking about the first blaze rod
So there's an assumption he stops after he gets it

oh if they only need one, ok

Except you need at least 6, 7 for security

I was assuming they needed 6 or 7

3:24 AM
Well, the odds for that rod were 1/8192

ok but the odds of getting the exact pattern 01100010101011 are also 1/16384 but that's not very interesting

And?
You can say that about anything
The odds of the lottery numbers being 10 41 21 27 33 15 are as low as me winning, but that doesn't make it any less rare if I won

The odds of you existing are infinitesimal, but that doesn't make it any more special

3:58 AM
Aw dang someone bought vyx.al

Or maybe not...
@RedwolfPrograms @Adám where did you find vyx.al for sale?

it looks to be still available
on, e.g., 101domain.com

Asking so I can keep an eye on it while I wait for sponsors

netim.com has it for the cheapest afaict
or istanco.net

4:05 AM
Well, maybe we can just move to albania

there's a second CVE for log4j out...

amazing

@pxeger hm wheres this talked about

4:21 AM
fkound it

Solution: don't use Java
(That's a lot harder than it sounds isn't it)

i'd gotten away with it until the crafting interpreters book

TIL about the US's Bat Bomb
Bat bombs were an experimental World War II weapon developed by the United States. The bomb consisted of a bomb-shaped casing with over a thousand compartments, each containing a hibernating Mexican free-tailed bat with a small, timed incendiary bomb attached. Dropped from a bomber at dawn, the casings would deploy a parachute in mid-flight and open to release the bats, which would then disperse and roost in eaves and attics in a 20–40-mile radius (32–64 km). The incendiaries, which were set on timers, would then ignite and start fires in inaccessible places in the largely wood and paper co...

And people wonder why the mexican free-tail bat is endangered...
At least 45046 just appears to be a DoS attack

4:33 AM
CVE-2021-45046

Wait no, the CVE says that, but another source says RCE is still possible
> We found that the DOS outlined in the CVE was not actually impactful because it did not consume resources during our testing
Time to watch my access.log and see when this variant starts showing up
This is like watching covid stats but on a faster pace :p

@pxeger suspiciously close to the origin of covid 19
Anti-tank dogs (Russian: собаки-истребители танков sobaki-istrebiteli tankov or противотанковые собаки protivotankovye sobaki; German: Panzerabwehrhunde or Hundeminen, "dog-mines") were dogs taught to carry explosives to tanks, armored vehicles and other military targets. They were intensively trained by the Soviet and Russian military forces between 1930 and 1996, and used from 1941 to 1943, against German tanks in World War II. Initially dogs were trained to leave a timer-detonated bomb and retreat, but this routine was replaced by an impact-detonation procedure which killed the dog in the process...
The explosive rat, also known as a rat bomb, was a weapon developed by the British Special Operations Executive (SOE) in World War II for use against Germany. Rat carcasses were filled with plastic explosives, and were to be distributed near German boiler rooms, where it was expected they would be disposed of by burning, with the subsequent explosion having a chance of causing a boiler explosion. The explosive rats never saw use, as the first shipment was intercepted by the Germans; however, the resulting search for more booby trapped rats consumed enough German resources for the SOE to conclude...

what the hell were war people on

Psychochemical warfare involves the use of psychopharmacological agents (mind-altering drugs or chemicals) with the intention of incapacitating an adversary through the temporary induction of hallucinations or delirium. These agents have generally been considered chemical weapons and, more narrowly, constitute a specific type of incapacitating agent. Although never developed into an effective weapons system, psychochemical warfare theory and research—along with overlapping mind control drug research—was secretly pursued in the mid-20th century by the US military and Central Intelligence Agency...

i have a small blog post on chemical warfare lol

A Butterfly Bomb (or Sprengbombe Dickwandig 2 kg or SD 2) was a German 2 kilogram anti-personnel submunition used by the Luftwaffe during the Second World War. It was so named because the thin cylindrical metal outer shell which hinged open when the bomblet deployed gave it the superficial appearance of a large butterfly. The design was very distinctive and easy to recognise. SD 2 bomblets were not dropped individually, but were packed into containers holding between 6 and 108 submunitions e.g. the AB 23 SD 2 and AB 250-3 submunition dispensers. The SD 2 submunitions were released after the container...

@PyGamer0 done

realistically we could just make that room public ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ probably

yeah

@hyper-neutrino But... but that way, Jelly will be more accessible to the public, and us Jelly golfers will lose our supremacy in the golfing world ;P

@pxeger Definitely, feel free to propose it

5:56 AM
> creating a tag synonym requires 5 score in this tag

6:12 AM
Do we have to invoke 11? :/

probably
unless we can find enough active users among the short list of those with score 5 in the tag

tbh, I don't think we've had a tag synonym approved without needing mods for a long time

7:11 AM
java: 1+++++5 = SYNTAXERROR

Java has x++, right?
JS gives syntax error too because 1 is not a valid thing to apply ++

If you just want to increment those, you can use -~1-~5

have we agreed on the direction?

I think the direction I put in the original message is the best option
because multithreading is basically one implementation of concurrency

alright (I agree)
^^ yeah agreed

Agreed

9:02 AM
alright it is done
and now i go sleep

although technically you can have multithreading without concurrency, but if you're not doing that then why use the tag

JoKing did a face reveal

@PyGamer0 ?

was looking through the past dyalog competition winners

Ah, that's what I thought.
Not the only CGCC user to do a face reveal there.

who else?

I'm not sure if they want me to connect their face with their user name in the open (even though you can certainly connect the dots with a little bit of research.
Well, some of them use their real name, so that shouldn't be a problem: Lynn and marinuso.

10:33 AM
@Adám i dont think you should do that

Zacharý

@Bubbler Only works if x is a variable

^

X++++ and —x++ won’t work

@PyGamer0 Agreed. So I've mentioned 3 that use their real name openly, but I know of at least three more that don't.
Is it fair to say that when joking claims he's joking, he isn't joking?

can't i be both

@JoKing Are you joking?

or are you joking

yesn't

@JoKing Schrödinger's JoKing

LOL

@lyxal Wouldn't that be Heisenberg's JoKing?

bah, I had a dream last night that I thought of a golf to one of my Retina answers

@Neil i guess you are golfing too much

@Neil So in the dream, you thought you had a golf, but it turned out you didn't?

10:45 AM
@Adám well, the problem is that I don't remember the dream well enough to know which question it was

Do you remember what the golf was?

also no unfortunately

That's so useless :-( You should golf more!

11:00 AM
why are there sö máñy dīâtríçs?

Because the Latin alphabet has been adapted to so many languages that it wasn't a perfect fit for.

like which languages?

Vietnamese: Tại sao lại có nhiều dấu phụ như vậy?

do those languages had a different script earlier?

Either that, or no script.

11:03 AM
oh

Lithuanian has some interesting ones too: Kodėl tiek daug diakritinių ženklų?

did you use google translate?

Yeah.
@PyGamer0 E.g. Maltese is of Semitic origin (like Arabic and Hebrew), and so needs a "harking" sound (IPA's x) which doesn't exist in Latin, so they have ħ: Għaliex hemm tant dijakritiċi?
@JoKing Have you considered grabbing king.jo?

i didn't realise .jo was a valid domain

Ah, you have to have a local Jordanian contact.
It is a bit expensive (and awkward), but having jo@king.jo would be pretty darn cool.

11:18 AM
jokingjo
sounds like a company

i kinda want a .golf domain
> king.golf: $13,071.95/year
perfect

they expect a king to have money
as a side note 4 letter domains are always stupid costly

atleast joking.golf is a bit cheaper

what about jokingjokingjokingjoking.golf
should be cheaper
@JoKing how do you check the price?

i just picked a random domain registrar site and searched it up
it's probably different on different sites
i had a period where i wanted a site with emoji in the name, but they're really annoying to search for

11:38 AM
@Razetime That's why I go for 3 letter domains. apl.wiki and apl.golf were extremely cheap.

11:50 AM
