Q: Cops: There's a fault in my vault!

Redwolf ProgramsIn this game of cops and robbers, each cop will make a vault: a program that stores a secret, and requires a key to unlock. The robbers should find a way to get the vault to reveal its secret without knowing the key. Cop rules Cops will write two short segments of code: A vault, which takes a ke...

Q: Robbers: There's a fault in my vault!

Redwolf ProgramsThis is the robbers' thread. The cops' thread is located here. Robber rules Should work for all keys and secrets Should require the same number or fewer guesses as the cop's fault, to prevent brute forcing Does not need to be the same as the cop's intended fault Multiple cracks may be made for t...

Why's there so much lag between post time and when it's announced in chat? That was 20 minutes ago...

@cairdcoinheringaahing sorry, I saw your message a bit late, here it is
@LuisMendo have they reverted it now?

3:25 PM
@flawr I don't think so. I still see the absurdly large title fontsize and inter-line spacing (they did reduced that one a little, from 1.6 to 1.5, about 10 days ago; but it's still too much for my taste)

ah right

Is there anyone who actually likes or wanted the new sizing, or did SE just do an SE and decide it was what was best for us all?

SE doing an SE. Totally
Will they revert it? I hope so

I wish they'd either let individual sites customize it (since this site specifically uses a lot of short answers with headings, making the headings look ridiculously big), or let users customize it for themselves. My opinion on designing anything is that new features should be optional by default, especially when it's formatting related and people have been writing things for years that expect the formatting to have a certain look and it suddenly changed.

CMC: Generate a clue from a string by replacing alternate letters with underscores. Example: Programming Puzzles & Code Golf -> P_O_R_M_I_G _U_Z_E_ & C_D_ G_L_. Uppercasing not necessary. Input will not contain underscores or digits but all other printable ASCII is fair game.

@Neil Every other non-space?

@Adám no, just alternate letters, but there won't be any underscores or spaces, so you can match on \w if you want

ngn
4:14 PM
shorter: {@[x;1_'0N 2#&>/"`z"<\:_x;:;"_"]}

@Neil QuadR, 13 bytes. Try it online!

4:41 PM
@Neil Uh, there can be spaces, no?

yeah, your answer seems to work

ngn
4:55 PM
@Adám how short can you make it in apl?

5:23 PM

ngn
@Adám cool, i had 21 (without regex): '_'@{(⊢>≠\)⍵∊⎕a,⎕c⎕a}

@ngn '_'@{(⊢>≠\)⎕A∊⍨1⎕C⍵}

ngn
@Adám 1⎕c - nice

Alternative approach: '_'@{m>2|+\m←⎕A∊⍨1⎕C⍵}

ngn
@Adám does 2|+\ have any advantage over ≠\ ?

5:32 PM
No.

6:14 PM
@Neil Pip, 15 bytes: Try it online!
Or 14 bytes with the latest version: aRXA{%++i?a'_}

Fun fact: Apparently the only time in Google's recorded history that searches for "Bing" have surpassed that of "Potato" is June of 2009. (source)

6:49 PM
Haha
I'm more interested in the annual November peak in potato interest, though. Maybe because mashed potatoes are served at Thanksgiving?
And then why was there a huge peak in April 2020?

7:33 PM
Not sure. Another interesting thing I found was "Integer Factorization" has a huge spike in interest every September
Your guess for potato interest appears to be exactly right, as "Mashed Potato" follows the same trend, but it isn't nearly as noticeable in "Baked Potato" or "Boiled Potatoes". No idea about April 2020, maybe a joke of some sort?

Or people were eating/stockpiling lots of potatoes during quarantine?? My first guess for any unusual trend in spring 2020 is that it's coronavirus-related.

Maybe, it does start to increase around the same time as "quarantine" and "toilet paper"

7:49 PM
This is so weird. "Baked potato" has an annual peak as well, but it's in December/January. It also has a strong peak in April 2020. Meanwhile "Potato salad" has a primary peak in July (expected, it's a popular summer picnic food) and a secondary peak in December (unexpected--is this Christmas or southern hemisphere summer?); its spring 2020 peak is a bit later, more towards May.

And, of course, obligatory XKCD.

Apparently potato salad is a traditional Christmas food in Germany
That at least explains the secondary peak near December

8:06 PM
Ahh, makes sense.
