I don't think I've ever flagged 14 comments as obsolete at the same time at the same post anytime before...

@ATaco 1-indexed arrays are great

A: Square root a number

Sergii Martynenko JrHaskell, 37 bytes x!n=filter(\z->mod(z*z)n==x)[1..n] Throws exception, if searched number doesn't exists

Should this be deleted?
Evidently 6 people think it doesn't meet the requirement. I don't really know how to test Haskell so I can't see for myself

@BusinessCat It should it does not meet the requirements

rip

Alright. Just asked because it's been up for 5 days with no VTDs yet

@BusinessCat I'm pretty sure even Haskell can't filter the integers up to the large test cases in under a minute. I've voted to delete without checking because the answer author has made no response in 5 days

Q: Fraction to exact decimal

orlpWrite a program or function that given two integers a, b outputs a string containing a decimal number representing the fraction a/b exactly. If a/b is integer, simply output the value, without a decimal dot or leading zeroes: 123562375921304812375087183597 / 2777 -> 44494913907563850333124661 8...

if ((Boolean.toString(condition).toLower() == "true") == true)

But braingolf doesn't have floats though

@totallyhuman it doesn't need them, it has arbitrary precision integers. It's still possible to calculate and output the correct answer in Braingolf

Mm okay

@mınxomaτ I got accepted to the beta program! I think they're just being slow at accepting additional people, not being too picky about who they select.

Okx
1:27 PM
@BetaDecay does it have to be solvable?

It also appears that I have to use some API to access the device, it doesn't have an interactive web version yet.
(Actually that link doesn't seem to be the API, just a description of the device)
I think this is the API, I'll have to check it out and figure out how to run it.

Does Charcoal use string compression?

dear grep-xperts. I want to find all duplicates word (such as "the the") in a text document. I have run egrep "(\b[a-zA-Z]+) \1\b" but this doesn't actually tell me what the words are
is there some way to get grep to tell you which words are duplicated?

sounds like you want something other than grep
or at least "in addition to"

oh :(
I was hoping for command line magic

well there's still hope there

>grep-xperts
I think you mean grepsperts

2:22 PM
GrepSports

grerpsperts

@Mayube true
it's only because I have some long lines and it's hard to check them by eye
of course grep should really just highlight the words in the text it shows me :)

i imagine you could use something like sed <regex>| sort | uniq

just use Vim's search

oh! egrep --color "(\b[a-zA-Z]+) \1\b" cc-paper.tex
solved :)

Q: Yet Unused Pairs

Wheat WizardLet's define a sequence of positive integers a. We will define the sequence on even numbers such that the result of even numbers is a(2n) = 2a(2n-1). The odd indices of the sequence will be smallest positive integer not yet appearing in the sequence. Here are the first couple terms. 1,2,3,6,4...

@Cowsquack No that's LOC. I'd need to golf off 3 lines, which wouldn't be hard; I could golf off 30-50 lines just by removing all of the testing code.

@Cowsquack Why the new name?

Because cows do quack

@EriktheOutgolfer Well yeah it's so that the implicit pyinclude core works because otherwise those statements aren't in the __dir__ of the core file.
I don't know a better way of doing it :P
@Mr.Xcoder I was going to do that after I fixed the 1000000 bugs :P

well, I dunno why you have to do like that anyways
why not just...not always use pyinclude core or something?

3:07 PM
4gb of coredumps on my server, hmm
1 2g file and then 2g of 1.3M files

@EriktheOutgolfer then I need to explicitly define all of those functions in interpreter.py which isn't any better...

that's maybe why you have all those bugs ;)
I mean, instead of using core.input, use input for example

No but pyinclude module is equivalent to from module import *.
So it is input rather than core.input :P
pyimport module is equivalent to import module. :P

oh you mean inside positron

3:20 PM
(which is really python that looks like mathematica lol)

thanks for the chal @Mr.Xcoder :)
wip

what about the function syntax tho
and codeblocks
if (condition) then {
    // Do stuff
} elif (condition) then {
    // Do stuff
} else {
    // Do stuff
}
while (condition) do {
    // Do stuff
}

that looks like both sh and c

foreach (iterable) do {
    // Do stuff with $1
}

3:21 PM
and that looks like ruby

func = function {
    // Do stuff; $0 is all arguments; $1... are the individual arguments
}

(the each part mostly)

Personally I'm not a fan of elif I prefer else if

@BusinessCat stack overflow happens this way

you can chain a bunch of elifs together but with else if it's essentially:

3:23 PM
also elif is golfier ;)

if a:
    # do stuff
else:
    if b:
        # do stuff
    else:
        if c:
            # do stuff
then again, the way I designed my language, elif is essentially the same thing as ^

it shouldn't should it?
basically this:
if a: # true1
elif b: #true2
else: #false
isn't theoretically the same as

@HyperNeutrino Why did you stop working on Anyfix?

if a: # true1
else:
 if b: #true2
 else: #false

@Mendeleev Anyfix notation doesn't work well

3:25 PM
@HyperNeutrino well, I mean
the point was to make it work well

also who is James--Smith?

@EriktheOutgolfer HyperNeutrino's alt

@EriktheOutgolfer Yeah they're different but the internal representation in my language is essentially that
@Mendeleev I don't have an alt. That's alexander-liao's alt.

I think

I don't have an SE alt

3:25 PM
@HyperNeutrino ...

well actually I do now
I recreated one

how about NeutrinoBot?

It's NeutrinoBot though

@HyperNeutrino The person, not the SE account
@HyperNeutrino ninja'd

><
James--Smith was my name for everything before I decided not to care about hiding my name from public sources. I don't know why it continues to push from James--Smith even though I sign in with alexander-liao when doing git push [-u origin master].

3:27 PM
@HyperNeutrino because git config

oh
how do I use git config

@HyperNeutrino you perform five different arcane rituals, which involve sacrificing your first born, to satisfy the git gods, then and only then you have a slim chance of being able to get git or any sub-commands working :p

hm ok
I will have to wait a while then
;P

100 rep too late...

Congrats! :D

3:35 PM
Also, looks like there's a badge I should go get.

Yes :P
I've had Inquisitive at 29/30 for a couple of weeks now. I haven't asked a single question for a while apparently o0

OMG @Dennis Congrats!

Congratulations @Dennis!

@Dennis congrats

Is it considered a duplicate if I make a code-golf challenge that asks to implement Pollard-Rho factorization (I'd give a full spec of course), given this challenge already exists? codegolf.stackexchange.com/q/131539/55329
@Dennis congrats!

3:38 PM
Congrats!

Hmm, there's like 5 different gold badges I'm super close to getting

hm looks like there are 0 gold badges that I'm going to get anytime soon :P

@all Thanks! #pinggolfing

@Dennis You still have a quite a way ahead if you want to reach bear-level dominance over PPCG.SE :p security.meta.stackexchange.com/q/1412/71460 security.meta.stackexchange.com/q/2118/71460

Heh, I didn't even have to click the link to get that. ;)

3:41 PM
@Dennis hmm...kinda failed starbait I see
you had to tap the link it seems though

@Dennis (assuming of course MartinEnder isn't your sockpuppet :p )

@EriktheOutgolfer Nah, I used to be active on Crypto.

erm, that's not crypto

@EriktheOutgolfer the bear is also well-known on crypto

But I know him from Crypto.
For some reason, I used to be one of Crypto's top users. Got the swag and everything.

3:45 PM
Right now you need to have about 1.7k rep to be on the first two pages on Crypto
and that's the criterion for getting swag upon graduation

I used to be a top user on ELL (English Language Learner's)

I have 1,661, which used to be enough.

so yeah, Crypto kinda has a lack of high-rep users

like most sites apparently

@EriktheOutgolfer not every site has as many As as PPCG ;)

3:46 PM
ppcg is nothing in front of so

How can I set the recursion limit higher in Python? Something like sys.setrecursionlimit(..) but i don't think this and import sys is enough

Well, getting rep on PPCG is comparatively easy.

@Dennis not for everybody...;)

It is much easier

@Mr.Xcoder That's it, but you might need to increase the stack if you set it too high.

3:48 PM
Oh, right

@EriktheOutgolfer Comparatively. It's easier here than on SO or SU.

(why almost every starbait of mine fails >_<)

@Dennis Congrats!

here you "just" have to solve programming challenges ;)
(or pose them)

PPCG challenges oftentimes wind up in the HNQ. After that, it's votes for everybody.

3:51 PM
@Dennis I think the insane amount of average As to Qs make them wind up on HNQ most of the time

(up)votes
fortunately no downvotes, closevotes, or even deletevotes

@SEJPM Yep. PPCG questions oftentimes get 10 answers within minutes of being posted.

@EriktheOutgolfer Say that to "test if two numbers are equal"
I think it's sitting at +2/-28

well I don't think the -28 is because of hnq

@EriktheOutgolfer It never was on hnq, it was o bad

3:54 PM
basically I don't think you can downvote immediately after you register

Most of my challenges that were upvoted got on hnq

I think my xkcd has half of the upvotes because the question was present in HNQ
@Mendeleev Nice, got your laptop 💻 back!

@Dennis if they're too trivial they get around 40 in less than 5 minutes

@Mr.Xcoder Um
I don't get it
Oh, yeah, that!
Yeah, that happened. Actually a few days ago. I upgraded its screen and keyboard and stuff
so its screen is now the same resolution as my desktop computer's screens (1440x900) :P
By the way, take a look at this:
It was a post I made on /r/battlestations

Damn, your click bait got me!

3:59 PM
Your monitor choices pain me

@Mendeleev What a layout
My whole layout is my Mac 💻, and my phone just in case

@Mendeleev what linux distro/dm/theme are you using on left-most monitor

@Downgoat Same on all monitors and computers. I'm using Arch, GNOME, Arc Dark with Arc system icons and Numix Circle app icons
Font is 10.5 point Roboto

Jim
@Mendeleev This mousepad is just ridiculous

@DJMcMayhem I got them all under $12 so they don't match :P
@Jim Why?
The "employee referrals" one?

Jim
4:04 PM
@Mendeleev It is overly too small

@Mr.Xcoder Why emoji?
@Jim Is it? I haven't noticed that it's small...

But 1080p is soooo much nicer

Keyboard prediction

Then again, I've been using it for a year so I'm probably just used to it

I don't even have a mouse!

4:05 PM
@DJMcMayhem I don't have the like $400 to upgrade all three to 1080p, and I would not want mismatched monitors
@Mr.Xcoder I'm sorry

Jim
@Mendeleev You need something, like, 3 times bigger :p

@Jim ehh this is ok

@Mendeleev I am not sorry 😐

@Mr.Xcoder :P

@Mendeleev :| you can get 3 1080p monitor for just $400? O_o

4:09 PM
@Downgoat I was at costco yesterday and they have 24" LG IPS 1080p monitor for $130. Add in sales tax and you get about 430, but without sales tax it's 390

Owow I was plan on getting 1 2880x1440 monitor for $490 am I bring ripped off

> 2880x1440
wat

@Downgoat I was looking for 120hz monitors last night and found an Acer 23" 1080p 144hz monitor for $180

What do you all like about monitors?

@Mendeleev it's double 720p
@Mr.Xcoder being able to see what my computer's doing, mostly

4:11 PM
Isn't one screen enough??

@Mayube so 2560x1440?

@Mendeleev yes that is you :P

@Mr.Xcoder my ideal monitor is 1440p 144hz ips

@Mendeleev 21:9?

@Downgoat Kek

@Mayube no, 16:9

4:3 is best :P

Yea but that look ugly and have giant bezels:(

no u

4:14 PM
> $799.99

21:9 is just 7:3 in disguise

@PhiNotPi yes this
and "16:10" is 8:5

Wtf if I get monitor 2" smaller it is half the price

I think people just want to compare then to 16:9
@Downgoat send pls

DoorknobThis challenge is a tribute to our Legendary Challenge Writer™, Calvin's Hobbies — now renamed to Helka Homba —, in the same spirit as Generate Dennis Numbers. @cairdcoinheringaahing I'll take a look at it

@Downgoat no not link. send me the actual monitor. i want a screen :P
/s

Oh send 20,000 tin cans and I'll purchase and send

@cairdcoinheringaahing Lol

4:18 PM
><

@cairdcoinheringaahing Pfff

I just found the bug in my program

>_>

it's because I was reusing a variable name
index refers to the current instruction
but then I used it in a for loop ><

Use i instead of index much golfier

4:19 PM
I used k instead because I think i is another variable

I really want to star spam because I've never done it before and its forbidden, but must resist urge

Have fun starspamming there!

@cairdcoinheringaahing I see it's now a comment.

@cairdcoinheringaahing I did it about a year ago. seems more fun than it is EDIT: NOT ANY MORE PLEASE NO SUSPEND ;-;

@HyperNeutrino its mainly the reaction

4:20 PM
(by the way don't say that, because now if someone starspams, people may think it's you)

@cairdcoinheringaahing why would you even feel an urge to do this evil thing I don't understand are you sheep :P

@Mendeleev the suspension is hardly worth it, huh

@HyperNeutrino yeap

@Mendeleev brb permanently suspending

@Downgoat yaaaaaay

4:21 PM
O_o isn't that bad thing

@Downgoat is sarcasm

wait why is Downgoat still a Sandbox RO

Don't frame me! I must leave, to avoid suspicion ¬_¬

@HyperNeutrino ssshhhh don't say so loud

DOWNGOAT IS A SANDBOX RO!!!!!
better? :D

4:23 PM
Much

Nice

:O is your doggo?

(The dog)

@Mendeleev why?

4:24 PM
lol you've been framed

@Downgoat is the profile picture lol

Oh >_<

@Downgoat No it's a goat

Those were some quick stars

... did you just make the goat your scapegoat

4:25 PM
I forgot to star my own dog. Don't kill me noooooo...

@cairdcoinheringaahing What does your username mean?

@cairdcoinheringaahing Your puppo is a starbait

But it's sooo cute

Question: in maths, how would you represent a node's parent on a tree

4:30 PM
What happened to programmer5000?
Voting stuff?

if you look at the profile
it says "suspended for voting irregularities until July 15"
but best not to talk about it

@HyperNeutrino brb fixing

I am far too lazy to open a new window

4:31 PM
@Dennis lol k

And go to users, and then type progra... and then click and then read.... Too much effort

You could be using that effort to remove bytes from code

My code?
If so, good point @BusinessCat
But TNB is like a magnet

@cairdcoinheringaahing s/goats and //

4:36 PM
@Downgoat scotland be crazy

If in a language I'm using ø to mean an empty array, is there a good character for an empty string?

@BusinessCat the capital?

epsilon?

@BusinessCat "

Jim
From what I remember, epsilon and ø both mean "empty set", but in math and computer science respectively
I could be wrong though

4:41 PM
ø for empty array, Ø for empty string
ninja'd ><

@Adám I actually could do that, since strings are in “curly quotes”

Wikipedia says In formal treatments,[1] the empty string is denoted with ε or sometimes Λ or λ. But obviously that's only for formal language theory

@BusinessCat Why are you using the Nordic letter instead of a proper empty set symbol ?

@BusinessCat stealing from Jelly?

Let's go with "inspired"

4:42 PM
I never realized there are so many: ø Ø ∅

@Adám No reason in particular, but more fonts support it and it's potentially easier to type

I just saw the starboard with the picture of my dog 20 mins ago.

@BusinessCat Do you have an empty list also, or is that the same as an empty array?

Time flies when you're talking to random strangers you have never and will never meet

4:45 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing never is a strong word

@Adám I meant list when I said array

@HyperNeutrino well I have family in Canada...

ah I see
I know a mod who lives only like an hour away from me

@BusinessCat APL uses for empty list and '' for empty string. " looks like ''

PPCG or any other non-important site?

4:46 PM
they used to live in the same city as I currently live in (but maybe not when I lived there)
@cairdcoinheringaahing Open Source

@HyperNeutrino imagine being neighbours with Dennis or Martin without realizing it

@HyperNeutrino I work only 20 mins away from Jon Skeet.

@Adám just being in the same county as Jon Skeet is enough to make me better at coding

4:48 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing I pass through his hometown on my way home from work…

@Adám accidendentally meeting on the train: "Wha wha wha head explodes"
Are there APL questions on SO?

@Adám but not on your way to work?

@cairdcoinheringaahing Could totally happen.
@HyperNeutrino No.

@HyperNeutrino Britain is weird at transport
ever since Brexit...

@cairdcoinheringaahing stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/apl Funny enough, there is not a single unanswered APL question on SO!

4:51 PM
I made my profile picture better!

@cairdcoinheringaahing The answers there sound more like a yes to me.

@Adám each to his own

@cairdcoinheringaahing Anyway, I'm not intending to learn J or K anytime soon.

@cairdcoinheringaahing What are you talking about? That is clearly answered

@DJMcMayhem I really dislike APL. Like more than I dislike Trump. Which is saying something

4:57 PM
... OK?

@cairdcoinheringaahing Wow. APL puts your physical wellbeing in danger?

@Adám no but neither does Trump. His hands are too small to press the red button

@cairdcoinheringaahing I was more thinking gradual effects like illnesses, pollution, global warming, economy, health care.

that's... uhm this might not be the right place for that

@cairdcoinheringaahing A quick reminder:
57
A: Does the Be Nice policy require SE users to "be nice" to people who are not SE users (e.g. public figures)?

Shog9Let's read that "be nice" policy: Whether you've come to ask questions, or to generously share what you know, remember that we’re all here to learn, together. Be welcoming and patient, especially with those who may not know everything you do. Oh, and bring your sense of humor. Just in case. ...

@Adám like this?
and fine. I've gtg anyway
