Well, the annoying thing is that 6th form (NEWT-level exams) is like what I described, but GCSE only the top 10% in the country in a subject can get the highest grade, regardless of how well you did.

high school was pretty fun
college was pretty fun
work is fantastic

4:17 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing do UK schools focus on STEM/programming at all? because there's been a big push recently in the US for more programming courses
that's how things like Hour of Code started iirc

@NickClifford We can take CS/IT from GCSE and A-level and Science and Maths are compulsory until A-level. There are also a few clubs (STEM club, coding club etc.) but not a hugh push

Anonymous
@NickClifford I'm expecting that to fizzle out just like the DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) program did from when I was a kid

@Mego yeah I agree. I'm all for more programming, but it's clear that the demand isn't huge
like we had lots of mandatory Python programming assignments when I was a freshman in high school
I really liked them (except for the Python part), but most people were really confused by it and showed little interest

ಠ_ಠ I just finished deciding the parsing rules for Levant, and they are insanely difficult to implement (this is the parse rules FWIW)

@NickClifford that happens a lot in my university, actually. People enroll in my course and just don't wanna do programming classes for some reason.

@NickClifford Common sense says that forcing people to do something they aren't interested in isn't going to get them interested.

exactly

Mego is very insightful today

Unfortunately, common sense seems to be missing from the US education system

@cairdcoinheringaahing I had an extra cup of coffee this morning

I'm in a private high school atm, so my experience is a little different than most people's, but yeah, it's a mess

Just saw a headline reading "Hippo escapes from zoo, gets disappointed by the real world and returns to its enclosure after 2 minutes of freedom."
I can understand, mr. Hippo. I can totally understand.

@J.Sallé Mrs. Hippo, actually. Yeah, modern Israel is a harsh place.

Hey @Adám! Nice TIO/APL presentation!

@Adám oh, that happened in Israel? I just saw the headline on a screenshot hahahahahah

@cairdcoinheringaahing is there a link to it or something?

4:29 PM
@NickClifford It's starred in the TIO room

@cairdcoinheringaahing Thank you.

@cairdcoinheringaahing rip profile pic?

@Adám Just out of curiosity, was it is Denmark? The podium had "Konverence" (or something similar) and I know APL has a base in Denark
43 mins ago, by caird coinheringaahing
Yeah, I'm going to change it back once I've done my GCSEs

@cairdcoinheringaahing wherever Elsinore is

4:34 PM
Yep, Denmark

Which apparently is Denmark yes

@cairdcoinheringaahing Yes, this year's user meeting was at Konventum, Elsinore/Helsingør, Denmark.

Anonymous
@cairdcoinheringaahing So are you going to become an auror?

Elsinore, as in 2b∨¬2b

@Mego Unless aurors do maths or physics as their job, I doubt it. Too much running and outside time :P

Anonymous
4:36 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing Considering that Ron and Harry became aurors, I doubt there's much math or physics involved

Also the risk of permanent disability and/or death is probably slightly higher than other jobs.

Well, Death Eater is probably higher

Well, if you assume there are more aurors than Death Eaters, then yeah, probably.

Any good way to cast a boolean to an int for codegolfing?

In what language?

4:40 PM
Ruby, sorry
trying to do something like this:
a,b=gets.split.map(&:to_i)
s=0
gets.to_i.times{
x,y,r=gets.split.map(&:to_i)
s+=((a-x)**2+(b-y)**2)**0.5<=r?1:0
}
p s

In Ohm, I just use cond ? 1 : 0

Hm I guess I had to wrap it in parens
a,b=gets.split.map(&:to_i)
s=0
gets.to_i.times{x,y,r=gets.split.map(&:to_i);s+=(((a-x)**2+(b-y)**2)**0.5<=r)?1:0}
p s
can I change this directly to a one-liner sum?

a=154476802108746166441951315019919837485664325669565431700026634898253202035277999
b=36875131794129999827197811565225474825492979968971970996283137471637224634055579
c=4373612677928697257861252602371390152816537558161613618621437993378423467772036
then a/(b+c) + b/(a+c) + c/(a+b) = 4
and that's the smallest integer solution with a, b, c positive

@MarcusAndrews could it be converted into an Array#reduce or #sum call?

not sure
I am reading three inputs mid-loop
Not sure if that easily translates to a sum call in any form

Q: What are the PPCG specific abbreviations and terms?

AdámNewcomers to PPCG are often compelled to ask what many of our abbreviations and terms mean. Let us list them here so this information always will be easily available.

@DJMcMayhem I think it's meant to be an alternative to SE that's more suited to codegolf?

it can be a bank for your baby too

Can an RO pin ^^^? It's quite helpful for new users (or not so new users)

Anonymous
@DJMcMayhem Several times in the past, I've voiced my displeasure at the fact that we have to deal with a system designed for Q&A, when PPCG is most definitely not a Q&A site, and I've often wondered if SE isn't the best fit for PPCG. During the most recent conversation about it, someone (I think Pavel) threw out the idea that maybe we should make our own site. I decided to run with it.

Anonymous
@cairdcoinheringaahing A pin isn't necessary IMO. People just need to read meta. Also it's not really TNB-specific.

4:53 PM
@orlp So you can give your 1-year-old a small loan of a million dollars?

@Mego I suggested that before too, just haven't done much about it :p

@aditsu Want to join the project?

maybe..

@Mego Cool. I don't know anything about web-dev, but I'd be interested in helping. What does it run on?

@Mego You had the idea to make a new site, Pavel said it would be interesting to do

4:54 PM
@Mego do you guys need webdev help? because I'd love to join in

@Mego If it was a separate site, posts couldn't be migrated, and it wouldn't get the implicit advertisement from being SE, e.g. HNQ.

@Adám We've talked about allowing automatic crossposting from v2 to PPCG.SE. IMO the benefits of being able to have a site that is actually designed for competitive programming outweigh the detriments of not having HNQ traffic (plus, not having HNQ traffic means the detriments of HNQ traffic (like drive-by votes) are avoided, too).

Anonymous
4:56 PM
Plus, we can make a community ad once we have something to show, so we can get some SE traffic that way.

Anonymous
@cairdcoinheringaahing Right. I couldn't remember, and I didn't want to dig through the transcript. Thanks.

@Mego Notifications, profiles…

@Adám All things we intend to implement. I'm aiming for an SE-like experience, but with features that actually make sense for competitive programming.

One of the big things I have planned is separation of rep into challenge rep, solution rep, and Q&A rep (for things like ), and separate privileges for each type (like being able to optionally bypass the normally-mandatory Sandbox with sufficient challenge rep).

wait we're making sandbox mandatory for new users?

5:00 PM
@Mego Will existing PPCG users have each rep-type transferred over to the new site?

Anonymous
@HyperNeutrino Yes, for the PPCGv2 project.

huh interesting

Anonymous
@DJMcMayhem Yes, and will continue to have SE rep transferred for some period (possibly indefinitely).

So really, IIUC, it'll be a new interface to the existing site.

5:02 PM
If I Understand Correctly

Anonymous
@DJMcMayhem Not quite. It will have its own database backing, and will eventually be its own site. The purpose of linking to SE via rep transferring and crossposting is to ease the transition so that users won't be intimidated by starting over on a new site.

On a mostly-unrelated note: I was talking to my wife about this project, and she said we're all a bunch of nerds. :P

@Mego Well, she has a point

@cairdcoinheringaahing I told her I wasn't going to argue that point

@Mego >.> well there's that too

5:25 PM
Any faster way to do this?
n=gets.to_i
P=gets.to_i
p Math::log(n,P).to_i
(finding highest exponent such that P^k <= n)

You mean shorter or faster?

shorter
p Math::log(gets.to_i,gets.to_i).to_i perhaps

ok
You can just use ->(a,b){Math::log(a,b).to_i}
which you can call using puts->(a,b){Math::log(a,b).to_i}.call(gets.to_i, gets.to_i)

I think that would eat up more characters though

Huh? Since when did Hyper know Ruby?

5:30 PM
but you only need to include the lambda in the answer (is this for PPCG challenge?)
@cairdcoinheringaahing I don't lol
well actually
I kind of do a bit but not really

nah for a random clash challenge on codingame
I used the one-liner I posted above
Was just curious if it could be condensed further

CMC: 0<return float<given n

both reading/outputting counts in the total

@Adám VTC unclear

@HyperNeutrino How so?

5:31 PM
what are you even meant to do
oh makes sense
are we guaranteed that n>0

@HyperNeutrino Yeah, otherwise there are none.

ok
Jelly, 1 byte: H
Python: (2).__rtruediv__ (untested)
Proton: (/)&2 (untested)

Yeah, I don;t get it

05AB1E: ;

@all Wait wait, scratch that CMC.

5:33 PM
can't you just div n by 2 to satisfy the constraints

;-;
@MarcusAndrews that's what all 4 of my answers do :D
well anyway APL ÷2

@Adám That doesn't make any sense

CMC: 0<return random uniformly distributed float<given n

oh
can we allow 0<=random

the uniform function?

5:35 PM
@HyperNeutrino Would need to be ÷∘2 but whatever.

What's the point of n? Couldn't we just return a random float?

@Adám oh

@DJMcMayhem Random float built-ins are usually ≤1.

@DJMcMayhem what's your upper bound

random.uniform(0,n)

5:36 PM
@HyperNeutrino Sure, but then you should include n too.

Python: lambda n:random()*n;from random import*
Enlist: X

Python : lambda n:r(0,n);import random.uniform as r perhaps
(no idea if I'm doing this right XD )

no just use random.random() :P

@Adám APL (?0)×⊢

Anonymous
@Adám G* in Actually

5:39 PM
;-; Jelly's random function is not helpful here

@J.Sallé What I would have done too, but firstly that only works once, and secondly, there is a very clever 5-byter which inspired this CMC.

I officially hate my German homework. I answered ißt, the correct answer was isst, so it marked me down (for non-German speakers/understanders, they're the same word)

@Adám why does it only work once?

ಠ_ಠ doesn't ß literally mean "long s"
ಠ_ಠ_ಠ_ಠ

@HyperNeutrino Yep

5:41 PM
rip

@Adám R, 21 bytes cat(runif(1,,scan()))

Pyon: lambda n:n*random.random(

@J.Sallé Because when the function gets bound, ?0 will evaluate, and the result becomes the left tine.

@Adám I thought so, but I was testing it without bounding
I'm looking for the 5-byter

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

Stewie GriffinOutput all permutations of a vector The challenge is: Output all distinct permutations of a, potentially long, list of positive integers. You may assume that the vector has less than 1,000 numbers when testing, but the process should in theory work for vectors of any length. Restrictions: Yo...

It's been in the Sandbox a while now, and I've answered most of the comments...

5:45 PM
@HyperNeutrino Have you seen my PR on GitHub for Pyon?

What do you think? Is it a good/fun challenge?

nope brb looking

@Adám Yeah, I see I can't use ?0 so I'll need to think about it hahahahah

@J.Sallé Actually, there is a trivial 4-byte tradfn solution. But the 5-byte tacit function is more interesting.

5:49 PM
@Adám MATL, 2 bytes...? Or am I missing something?

Any way to make this shorter or port it to a shorter Ruby?
n=int(input())
t=[list(map(int,input().split())) for i in' '*n]
if n>2:t+=[t[0]]
s=0
for i in range(len(t)-1):
 x,y=t[i];X,Y=t[i+1];s+=((X-x)**2+(Y-y)**2)**.5
print(int(round(s)))

@StewieGriffin No, that looks right. (0<random<1)×input, right?

(calculating distance around a track, if 2 points then it's just a start-finish)

@Adám Correct.

@MarcusAndrews some I can think of are renaming int to a single-letter variable

5:55 PM
doesn't save any chars unless there are more than three of them

@cairdcoinheringaahing I think they tried to remove ß but it went wrong and now some words are only correct with ss while others can be written either way.
Verb: ißt
  1. former (before 1996) spelling of isst...

OK, let's do a harder one (or should it be on main?):
CMC: Given an n-dimensional numeric array where every dimention has min len 3, shift all elements away from a corner (you can decide which) chopping the overflowing ones and padding with zeros from the chosen corner.

Like, it's actually an uncommon spelling

@MarcusAndrews right forgot about the newline lol

Thanks -- I did fix that too
couldn't find anything more past that

5:59 PM
ok
