Although I like spaces over tabs, and that seems like a pretty controversial topic.

flagged as offensive
It's about time :P

tab's are much more easy to use when you have to indent 5/6 times than 2 spaces ^^

Unless you configure your tab key to insert two spaces. shudders

@Dennis It is disturbing to see it as 2 spaces...

Feb 11 at 20:42, by TimmyD
When I use Notepad++ for coding (which isn't often, anymore, since most things I do aren't in VBScript and instead are in PowerShell so I use the ISE) I have it macro'd to replace tabs with spaces.

2:04 PM
@Katenkyo Couldn't agree more.

I use Notepad++ when I golf, and need it to be able to put my 4-spaces before each line to post on this site :)

@Katenkyo Ctrl-k

@Katenkyo I use SOX, so I tab after pasting.

@TimmyD Ctrl-k puts in comment :)

Ctrl+k in the SE answer box.
It puts the 4-spaces in for you to code-block it.

2:08 PM
It also works with tabs btw.

^
Yea, my tab-filled Java always gets pasted with no issues :)
Except being Java.

Quick question =)
Should I post http://meta.codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/8681/31516 or not?

Oh, thanks, didn't know for that Oo. And tab'ing while in the box will just change focus, which is not what I want :)

But you can indent with tabs in your editor, then copy-paste.

That's what I'm actually doing, and why I prefer to let it doing 4 spaces :)

2:12 PM
@StewieGriffin I'd give it more time, personally, unless you're sure. It doesn't look like many have seen it, since it's only been there for a few not-super-busy hours.

@Geobits, I was hoping for a few personal opinions, not a general consensus :) If a few people here are positive then it will probably be well-received... :)

I don't think the pyramid volume formula is right, though.

@Geobits, really? Area*h, where the area is given by Heron's formula? Is that wrong?

I think that would be right for a triangular prism.

2:15 PM
@StewieGriffin that's not right for the area of a piramid
it's more like the area of a triangle-shaped cylinder

Crap, it's of course: 1/3*A*h

spooky

@BetaDecay Does this mean you're back from the dead?

@Geobits Possibly. I've kind of got GCSEs atm but I'll be back around summertime

Ah... Enjoy, good luck, and all that misc stuff etc yada yada.

2:21 PM
Thanks... Computer Science is killing me at the moment :P
Damn golfing taught me bas habits

Well if you survive, you'll be happy to note that we "graduated" recently.

We actually did it?

GCSE + CS = confused
Computer Science as a subject?

Yup

What's it like? (What topics do you learn?)
In Australia it's so easy I wish I was doing it.

2:26 PM
Databases, how the different parts of the motherboard, programming

Watch Shifty Eyes become an esoteric language... — tac Mar 4 at 0:58

@zyabin101theHated what the brainfuck...

@Katenkyo Yes :P Because without these emoticons, Shifty Eyes will become Sauce. And when I saw this comment, I couldn't resist.
I also took inspiration from Mouse.

3:01 PM
@zyabin101theHated is that your own language?

@crayzeedude Yes, it is.

@zyabin101theHated nice!

@zyabin101theHated That's one more proof that everything can, and will, be turned into an esoteric language at some point!

quick
is there a way to execute a block for each item in an array in cjam or
//pls 4giv am noob

3:18 PM
IDK if % (map) or / (each) works
Like this: [<array>]{<block>}/

i have r1/ to read a single int and put each digit in an array
trying to convert the strings to chars
wait no
strings to ints

you mean int to string?

well

otherwise, use map

it's reading the number as a string and putting each digit in the array as a string

3:22 PM
Then i will do.

ok i got it thanks
using map worked

for me % turned it into an array of char codes, i will parse a string[] into an int

See how they're char codes?
wait

3:27 PM
That didn't actually work, it's actually an int[], not an int
Tip: add ` to find the type

If you want to read an int, it's ri. If you want to read a number and convert it to a list of digits, it's r:~. And if you want a list of char codes it's r:i

o wow
yeahhh i have much to learn
but what exactly does ~ do in that case?

eval

3:29 PM
ah
and then you could use r:c or r:s if you need a char or string
heyyyy i'm learning stuff :D

i already have that up actually

@crayzeedude No, it's rc and rs

well
i meant an actual array of chars
or 1-character strings for whatever reason one might have

Hmm
Whoops, forgot ` (repr/toString) automatically converts char[]s into strings

3:34 PM
:c doesn't do anything to a string (fyi). And rs doesn't differ much from r either.
(In CJam, strings are arrays of chars - there's no difference between the two)

yeah, i know that
though i usually find it easier to work with arrays of chars
but again i have much to learn
also is there a complete reference/cheat sheet for the two-character ops anywhere?

Are you kidding me SE?
I just got the "Welcome to Stack Exchange chat!" message.

ಠ_ಠ

rip

3:42 PM
@CoolestVeto It's new.

i got that yesterday too

By the way, Welcome to Stack Exchange Chat!

ihaichu

Should I raichu an apology?

3:46 PM
Any advice on this?
It doesn't print the number, but that isn't specified. It that a loophole that doesn't matter?

I just tried out Akinator and he guessed Imoen from Baldur's Gate after 75 questions. Not bad.

What?

Yea Akinator is fun :)

@AquaTart Akinator?

oh that
@AquaTart ^

3:51 PM
I've got a 20Q at home. It's pretty fascinating.
== Principle and historyEdit == == Handheld deviceEdit == == Game showEdit == == ReferencesEdit == == External linksEdit... ==

i used to have one of those "deluxe" 20Qs. prism-shaped, larger screen, etc.
was pretty neat

@TimmyD is it good at guessing?

@TimmyD Animal, vegetable, or mineral?

They're not bad for normal stuff. The database is only so big, though.

Yeah, it's not too shabby.

3:54 PM
@KevinW. None, Fruit.

>_<

I picked it up right away when they came out, maybe Christmas 2004, so it was a huge deal back then.

I coded one as a project from a book ages ago.

Obviously neural networks and computational power both have come a long way in the past dozen years.

@Geobits ^_^

3:56 PM
Yea, mine was a straight lookup with booleans. Like I said, ages ago.

@TimmyD [citation-needed] for the neural network one. Marky is living proof.

@Dennis Can you please pull 05AB1E?

> Marky is living proof.
>_>
I don't know how to tell you this, but...

Fine, chatting proof.

Akinator needed 57 questions to guess what I was thinking of x)

3:58 PM
@Katenkyo What?

@Geobits ... tabs are amazing and the only true method of identation.
@Katenkyo DONUT?

@EasterlyIrk Well yes. Clearly.

He had a close guess while saying Siegfried, but failed once :D

@Geobits Oh good, I thought you were a heretic. :P

@EasterlyIrk videogamedunkey actually did a video about it which is how I found out about it.

4:01 PM
Awww, he guessed Tien instead of Krillin. Bad Akinator!

I'm going to try my absolute hardest to think of the most obscure character possible

@AquaTart wait videogamedunkey is someone other than your donkey?

@AquaTart The moment you find the most obscure character ever, it will no longer be the most obscure character ever.

Akinator thinks Elrond is NSFW. :P

4:03 PM
@AandN Pulled.

Thanks :)

I was thinking of the main character of school days...

@Katenkyo Elrond is the same way. :P
Akinator, Elrond is not Clippy.
@AquaTart relavent to your search

I guess akinator puts that when he can't find :p
Alright, I'm gonna try with nemo from Mr. Nobody

> Found 9,710 results

4:06 PM
forbidden...
On that epic fail, I'm leaving!
Have a nice day guys!

@BrainLot Kinda like the interesting number paradox

Well, Akinator apparently has an evil twin named Rokinator. WTF?

Akinator absolutely failed on Marlene from FFVII. You could tell it was getting desperate toward the end, too.

But he couldn't guess himself.

Dammit he got it
Alex Kidd
It took him a while though.
@EasterlyIrk Yes.

4:09 PM
Bye Katenkyo!

> it was getting desparate

> Character already played 1715 times

Turing test confirmed

:/

Wow, he got Chrono from Chronotrigger? Woah.
He actually guessed Marlene from FF though.

4:09 PM
I thought of Howard Stern. You could tell he nailed it because the last three questions were "Is your character a radio show host?" "Is your character a radio show host?" "Is your character a radio show host?" (repeated the same question three times)

@EasterlyIrk It's a main character. He better get that one.

SE thinks I'm stupid

@LegionMammal978 everybody got that.

19 hours ago, by Doorknob
@flawr It's a new message. Every signed in user sees it once and never again.

4:10 PM
Oh, it's new
I see

@LegionMammal978 s/thinks I\'m/is/

why would you escape the quote

@Doorknob \F\o\r\ \s\a\f\e\t\y

@Doorknob Because they\'re fun to escape.

> Is your character a porn addict.
O.O

4:11 PM
Question: Does Alex have a six pack?

@TimmyD Well, is he??

@EasterlyIrk Alex is a bird.

oh yea

> Is your character a sex maniac?
WTH type of game is this?!

More like who did you pick to lead it down this path?

4:13 PM
@TimmyD One on the internet; everything leads there eventually

> Did your character die escaping from prison

> Did your character never exist in the first place?

> Does your character spend a lot of time in bed?

Well, 150 tries later Alex A. was never guessed.

> Does your character live with their best friend?

4:16 PM
@EasterlyIrk You said no to "is your character a real person?", right?

Guessed Tracer in 19 questions.

@Geobits No... Sorry.

I thought he wouldn't know because Overwatch was new but apparently not...

But he did ask if he was a bird, and I said yes

:D

4:18 PM
And no to has a six pack. I don't think birds have those.

> Bravo. You have defeated me.

> Does your character have an obsession with llamas?

Didn't know Monkeyfarm (modestly popular YouTuber who does mostly Minecraft videos)

Guessed Dennis pretty quickly too.
That one was cool because none of his questions looked like he was getting close too...

@AquaTart What now?

4:20 PM
Dennis the Menace not Dennis the Golfer

<--

@AlexA. Akinator doesn't know you.

4:21 PM
Dammit it guessed Shulker

1.9 came out like 3 days ago...

roflmao
Minecraft nerds take to the skies to publicize it apparently. :P

why is it that if i use # in a block it tries to find an index instead of taking one item on the stack raised to another?

All right, this time he won't get it.

4:23 PM
@crayzeedude # is power for two numbers, index for everything else.

Dang ... he got Cool Spot (the 7-Up mascot) in like 15 guesses.

What on Earth are y'all talking about?

Akinator

and i have two numbers on the top of the stack when i try to use it?

@Dennis I'm glad I'm not alone in thinking this

4:24 PM
Thought of Reggie Fils-Aime, guessed Bill Gates. HA

@TimmyD That raises more questions than it answers.
@crayzeedude Apparently not.

Yes, that's what he does.

huh.

Spilled some water on my keyboard

@crayzeedude Do you have a link?

4:25 PM
Just finished draining it out

@Dennis Have you ever played Twenty Questions? This is a web version of that.

Guessed Steve Wozniak. pls

@crayzeedude It creates quines?

Oh, he finally got it.

4:27 PM
no?

@AquaTart Well, he's vaguely in the right category of people.

OK, this time I'm thinking of Jon Skeet.

WHAT

@Doorknob rekt
4

4:28 PM
it got it on the first try too O_o

Hah

before the block starts, there are arrays of digits each with length 2
as well as a number representing the number of pairs on the stack

The expression on his face is great, too. "Nethack? Please."

@crayzeedude ~ will unwrap the array, pushing [1 2] and [3 4] on the stack.
# is index of those.

Hmm, does jon skeet qualify as famous

4:30 PM
yeah, yeah
but i thought that it would take one number raised to the power of the other

@AquaTart He's a cult classic. Not sure about famous.

since they're plain numbers on top of the stack

There are no numbers on the stack. You are not mapping the block.

I bet he can't guess Greg from down the street.

unless i'm just plain doing it wrong

4:32 PM
r:~2/{~#}% would work.
(not the golfy way though)

Now that's just cheating

except if the input is an odd number of digits in length, it takes the rest of it raised to the final digit which i don't want

Was thinking of this guy

He does that or says they are NSFW if he gives up.

@crayzeedude :# instead of ~# fixes that.

4:41 PM
Apparently, SkyDoesMinecraft is perfectly random

The wizard of yendor is not NSFW.

So far Jon Skeet has Akinator stumped
He did guess John McAleese which made me lol
Ha-ha! I stumped Akinator.
> Bravo! You have defeated me!
Well that was easy
Wow, guessed Etho in 17 questions. That was fast.
I love how the picture is "YOU'VE BEEN ETHO'D"
ROFL it actually guessed tagg
Although he called him "Taggerung"
haven't heard that in years
Stumped Akinator with LOLYOU but I think that was mostly because I answered some of the questions wrong
(LOLYOU was in the database so)
Hmm what obscure gamer should I do next
I love how the first question after "does your character play CS:GO" is always "is your character a reptile." Totally not a LeafyIsHere check
defeated Akinator with Lex Phantomhive
This is getting easier

5:12 PM
@Doorknob Akinator guessed the Wizard of Yendor ;_;

/claps

I was so certain I had him....
OK, beat Akinator with Niels Abel.
That one I did not expect

@xnor It's also important for answers which use parts from other answers to give attribution, because SE content is licensed under CC-BY-SA 3.0 with attribution required. I'm not saying that's the case here, as the answer in question is very close to what I got independently, and is reasonable for it to be a completely independent solution, but it's something to remember.
