Q: Given a Diagram, Find X

ATacoFind X I was inspired by math questions in which one is asked to "Find X" for a given shape. Originally, I was just going to have the challenge be to print the x and y location of the character 'x' in a String. But I supposed that would be too simple. So I considered the context they were normal...

@arda betseg is from turkey too.

@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC Yeah, I know.

12:31 AM
@arda Help, how do I install a monarchy in Turkey? It's not on apt-get.

@Oliver I'm not sure why you keep saying this

@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC run sudo apt-get install erdogan and it should be installed soon. It's a PITA to remove though.

It removes some packages like openvpn and tor, so keep that in mind.

@arda I don't have superuser permission. I heard of this rootkit called "GNU/coup". Can you help me with that too? It's also not on apt-get.

I'd love to keep talking but its 3:37am and I have to wake at 6:30am, and I have chem exam tomorrow, which I didn't study much for.

@arda OK, reply when you have time.

12:39 AM
@noɥʇʎPʎzɐɹC tbh I'm not really a fan of political talk on SE, as it can get flagged etc (and well, chat.se is google indexed). Mail me at p4p at photonmail d0t com if you want to discuss or talk about political stuff.

I'll second the recommendation to avoid politics in here. Helps us all get along better...

@Downgoat how would i write lambda x: x*2

question: how to make weak propert yon object in JS?

@El'endiaStarman I was reading feynman lectures and I saw " a sphere is the locus of all points for which the distances from two points are in a constant ratio." and I thought of the gravity voronoi maps you were doing because that was our final result for the equiforce surfaces with two bodies
what happened to that?

@LuisMendo It's hard for me to put a figure on what exactly I'm interested in (mainly because it doesn't really follow a pattern).
When it comes to statistics, I think I typically like "simple" situations (coin flipping, Good-Turing frequency estimation, etc.). On the subject of geometry, I've read about arborally-satisfied point sets and tropical geometry and a bunch of miscellaneous other things.

2:28 AM
@Downgoat +1 good idea, {x => x ** 2} looks more like a closure though
@Downgoat -1 you messed up your row height, also how do you get nice highlighting
@Downgoat ok wait why is Code in precompiled cheddar, also you shouldn't need isExpression there

I just mean video quality btw. I think D is slightly better but it's hard to tell.
In 4K D gets way better, so it might be worth it anyway.

What's the correct term for scaling up an image by an integer amount? Upsampling? Upscaling?

Upscaling, although that refers to increasing the size by any amount, not just integers
or, upsampling also works I suppose. Upsampling means "increasing the number of sample points" which applies if you're increasing the size measured in pixels.
In computer graphics and digital imaging, scaling refers to the resizing of a digital image. In video technology, the magnification of digital material is known as upscaling or resolution enhancement. When scaling a vector graphic image, the graphic primitives which make up the image can be scaled using geometric transformations, without any loss of image quality. When scaling a raster graphics image, a new image with a higher or lower number of pixels must be generated. In the case of decreasing the pixel number (scaling down) this usually results in a visible quality loss. From the standpoint...

@betseg Why? It's not a gas at room temperature

I'm talking about the name. All noble gases (except helium) end with -on.

9:31 AM
Iron is Ferrum in Latin

I had Latin for 6 years in school and forgot 100% of it.

Well done

@betseg What about other languanges? In german it is "Eisen".

Ferrum in Latin
Oops @KritixiLithos already told that
Demir in Turkish, dəmir in Azerbaijani

In Danish, chemicals are named based on Latin. "Natrium" for sodium
But iron is "jern"

it isn't rude to talk to people in English even if you could address them in their native language. but it's rude to have a conversation in a public room that only a handful can follow.
Just a reminder before this continues.

Aren't Swedish, Danish and Norwegian really similar?

10:05 AM
They are indeed
Back in the days they were pretty much the same (including Icelandic)

They all come from Old Norse

Though nowadays they are different

(also Faroese, stop forgetting Faroese :p)

But Norwegian is more similar to Danish than Swedish is to Danish

One the 2 big dialects in norway is understandable to a Swede, but not the other
And spoken danish is very hard to understand

10:09 AM
I could say the same for spoken Swedish

Danish is like swedish that feels a lot like dutch

Rødgrød med fløde is the only danish thing I know

` ` is the only danish thing I know

So isn't he. I treat people with the same respect that they exhibit towards other people. Since we are not talking to Linus in this chatroom, Be Nice doesn't apply here to what Fatalize asked
And no, I don't think that justifies it @Fatalize

Question: why do people stand up as soon as plane lands?

@betseg To leave the plane

This process would go much quicker if each seat had an eject button

@KritixiLithos but they have to wait at least 5 minutes until they can exit.

@betseg But at least you can get your bag from the overhead compartments while waiting

What if plane starts moving/stops quickly? They would fall down.

11:27 AM
People get up after the seatbelt signs are off. Then it would be safe for them

What if plane won't use a bridge, and stop in the middle of nowhere? The bus will wait everyone.
@KritixiLithos you are too optimistic :)

This is a pointless discussion
We all have our opinions, I usually get up as soon as the seatbelt signs are off

A plane can't reverse on it's own. Even if it could, it can't get up to speed so quickly that you would fall. The seatbelt signs usually go off if the parking position is reached, where the plane is immediately locked in place on the tarmac, so there is nowhere for it to go.

Some people actually stand up while taxiing.

11:42 AM
That's fine, too. If there is a problem, the flight attendants will ask you to sit down.

After a long flight it's nice to stretch your legs whether you can get off the plane or not

Something's up with my ISP's DNS proxy. There is a 40%-ish packet loss, but just for DNS lookups.

Anonymous
Use Google DNS?

They proxy that, too.

Anonymous
That's... unusual

It doesn't really matter what DNS you set, the traffic goes through the nearest ISP proxy first. Usually, if they are down, they'll re-route to the next POP. But there seems to be a problem today.
Not unusual at all (for residential connections that is).

Anonymous

12:37 PM
Great, my ISP implements that

Anonymous
:/

That's not a bad thing.
It usually decreases DNS lookup times significantly (because they are cached longer).

Anonymous
Maybe, but secretly re-routing a request to go somewhere other than its intended destination is not ok

Anonymous
I have a lot more faith in Google's DNS than my ISP

You request will still be resolved by Google if you set it. It's usually just cached by the proxy. It's the same as any reverse proxy CDN. If you connect to SE, you are connecting to Cloudflare, and not SE's servers. This is a common practice for almost all Internet protocols.
It also prevents catastrophic DNS outages, because a failure takes longer to propagate.

1:16 PM
Oh well, now I'm getting Unicorn errors for GitHub again.

@arda cable tie are expensive

why does the TLD matter?

@NathanMerrill Because geoTLDs are regulated by the laws the registrar country applies. In some countries, the legal owner of a domain is the WHOIS contact (no matter who purchased or has control over the domain). That would be the WHOIS proxy company if a "private" WHOIS is chosen.
