@Geobits Must be burned at the stake!

Sorry I don't conform to body ratios pulled straight from someone's ass :P

I just measured my arm to see if that actually worked
I'm sad to report it does
I feel.... disturbed... knowing my arm has a connection to the golden ratio

Look at the bright side; it's better than it having a pi ratio.

@Geobits Other body ratios, you're fine with.

@Geobits Yeah, edible arms are the worst

5:14 PM
@TimmyD If there were any that weren't made up junk, I probably would be fine with them.

Not time for food yet.

It's always time for food.
brb my leftover paella is calling me

5:29 PM
Plug for Sp's challenge:

Q: Counting icons for Innovation splays

Sp3000Innovation is a card game where both players battle through the ages, from prehistory to modern times, in an attempt to earn achievements faster than their opponents. Each card in Innovation is unique, and provides a player with a number of icons. If we treat each card as a 2x3 grid, then three ...

(I think it's a very nice challenge and deserves some more attention/competition.)

@sweerpotato I'd choose "Depends"

@sweerpotato I have this exact problem...

@sweerpotato How old is your computer? What can it not do that you want it to do? Do you play console games much?

(as well as, "do I want to pay 50 quid on top to have a shiny Darth Vader print on the PS4"...)

It's quite the dilemma..

5:31 PM
What's your budget? Can you find both on sale (since it's that time of year) for roughly that (combined)?

@Geobits 8 years, can't play anything - nor emulate Android in Eclipse
Glorious GTX 260
and dual core
2 cores best cores

Eight years old? Wow, sounds reliable :)

Built it myself :')

@MartinBüttner Just like with cars, the stickers make it go faster.

^ exactly, which is why it's totally worth the money
how is availability of games for old PlayStations from the store on PS4?

5:33 PM
Clearly this is better than a Vader case, though.

Fun anecdote: father was more or less in charge of my money 8 years ago, and I picked out some computer parts which he should order. He thought (..still thinks) he knows a lot more about hardware than I do - so he changed the order to something which was crap in my opinion. I changed it back and let him believe it was his parts :<

@MartinBüttner Terrible. You want a PS3 or Vita for that.

damn
I have a PS3, but I was considering selling it when buying the PS4

I essentially want to play sports games
But there are a lot of other good games I can play on my computer

@MartinBüttner Yea, it's ridiculous that the selection is so limited on the 4.

5:34 PM
and tamper with memory etc when I can't advance fast enough >:(

so, I've finished my next KoTH...but it takes too long :(

You can emulate most PS1/2 games on any decent computer, though.

2 bots running 100 games takes like 5 minutes

Ouch.
So we should all submit 10 bots each, right?

sure?
I'm still not convinced there aren't bugs

5:36 PM
> Next results expected sometime in 2017

because my "random bot" and "default bot" always end up tied

Hmm. Yea, that sounds suspicious, but I don't know the game, so...

The four-in-a-row bot challenge reminded me of something funny

Is this the function codebots you were talking about?

5:37 PM
In Swedish we literally call it hobo chess (luffarschack)

@Geobits I think I tried PlayStation emulation before and it wasn't too impressed by the results

When was this? I've emulated PS1 games on my phone with full framerate. PS2 is a bit tricky with some games, but it works in general on my not-too-well-specced laptop.

@NathanMerrill Any clue what part of the controller is too slow?

PS1 emulates pretty good iirc

@Geobits I think I was trying PS2

5:39 PM
PS2 and N64 are trickier

N64 worked very well for me, but it's just not the same thing without a good gamepad replica

For the record, I use PCSX2 on Ubuntu: pcsx2.net

@sweerpotato Where's the "both" option?

I'm using one of those Logitech gamepads which are basically PS2 controller replicas
@Geobits looks familiar, I think that's what I used as well

That's one thing I like about PS... it's really easy to find copycat controllers.

5:40 PM
(on Windows though)

@PhiNotPi I've run a profiler several times to ensure that the slowest part of the code is the actual bot functions being run

@Geobits they also have the nicest controllers to begin with ;)

@TimmyD :(

I think I made it twice as fast, but 10 minutes vs 5 minutes is still bad

Maybe a new computer is the right choice

5:41 PM
@MartinBüttner When I originally tried it (about two to three years ago), I wasn't impressed. I tried it again about six months ago, and it all worked better.

I can play almost everything on a new computer
Downside is I have to use Origin etc

@Geobits aah good to know... it would have been two or three years ago the last time I tried

@sweerpotato That is, of course, presuming you already have an Xbox One

I have a rusty PS3

@MartinBüttner Well, I can't say I'm a big fan of the weird rectangle pad/button on PS4 controllers, but yes overall :P

5:42 PM
hm
You have to buy an online account for PS4?

each turn, a bot is getting appx 8 function calls, and there are 100 bots of each type, and there are 1000 turns in a round

@Geobits I haven't used the PS4 ones yet

I just did my CIS 1500 exam. ez money
Oh hey are you guys talking about controllers? Gamecube. /thread

so we're talking 8*2*100*1000 = 1.6 million function calls in a single round

5:43 PM
Seriously the gamecube controller is fantastic. I'd call it perfect but it needs something like the ZL button but on the left

@MartinBüttner They feel nice. I just haven't figured out why the big wasted-space button needs to be there. Maybe I just haven't seen a game that makes good use of it yet.

Yeah, that might be hard to compress.

I don't know why people like GC controllers so much. If you're going to put two analog sticks on the thing, why not place them symmetrically?

Perhaps I should wait until the new gen GPUs/CPUs are released?

@Geobits Because you use them for such different things that it makes sense that they'd be in different places
Control stick is more important than d-pad so it gets top billing on the left

5:45 PM
Yeah I like the GC controllers

The GC controller is great, but I'm not a fan of the asymmetric bumper button. What, my left index finger can't handle two buttons?

ABXY is more important than C-Stick so they get top billing on the right

@undergroundmonorail That seems more like function following design, not good design.

@Geobits Same reason the Xbox controllers have them asymmetrical

Well, yea, but Xbox controllers....

5:46 PM
@Geobits TBH I might be biased because the GC controller is like perfect for Melee which is the game I care about the most in the whole world

What if they made the controller have sticks instead of bumper buttons
#realworldsolution

But I do use my GC controller for every game I play with a controller

Honestly the PS3 version of DualShock™ is really uncomfortable to use

@undergroundmonorail That's what DualShock controllers are for :P

"every game I play with a controller" I say, as if that's not just Melee and Rocket League

5:47 PM
@TimmyD Completely agree
I have to put my pinky fingers on top of the handles

Really? I thought the PS3 was more comfortable than PS2.

@undergroundmonorail Melee is one of my favorite games ever.

Oh, maybe it's because I have giant hands or something.

@Geobits my hands are so big

@NathanMerrill Maybe somewhat related: When I did my Core Wars KOTH, I got a massive speedup from doing things like setting the core size to be a power of 2 and using bitwise arithmetic instead of modulo.

5:48 PM
I have leprechaun hands

@Zgarb melee is legit my favourite game but i haven't played it in months because of school and i lost all my muscle memory :(
i can't even l-cancel right
i cry

Eh, PS2/PS3 controllers are very similar

I think if nothing else, we can all agree that the Wii U tablet controller is less ergonomic than basically anything.

@undergroundmonorail I haven't played it in years, but we used to have Melee marathons that lasted for days... good times.

@Geobits what about NES

5:49 PM
I actually find the Wii U Gamepad (assuming that's what you mean) fairly comfortable
Check out my cool modded controller

@undergroundmonorail It's fairly comfortable for a brick slab, not for a primary controller IMO.

@Zgarb I've been to a couple tournaments and had my ass beat but I'm getting better :P

@sweerpotato I played SMB3 a couple days ago and forgot what it felt like to have half my fingers go numb.

:D
Good ol' games
Games are too easy nowadays

@undergroundmonorail It's not super easy to tell in the picture but the back of the controller has the shell from a black controller and it looks slick

5:50 PM
@PhiNotPi I don't think I'm doing any arithmetic

Also I removed the vibration motor because I like my controller light and I turn off vibration in Melee anyway :P

however, my challenge is currently single threaded

@undergroundmonorail do I spot a daskeyboard?

@sweerpotato yep

So sweet keyboard

5:51 PM
It's pretty nice

Brown switches?

slick

@NathanMerrill Any string operations?

yes
I'm appending strings
but I don't know of a way around it

5:52 PM
undergroundmonorail.tumblr.com/post/130845819919/… here, you can listen to my type through my shitty headset mic

Yeah, I'm big into consoles ... In the console room downstairs I have an Atari 2600, NES, SNES, N64, GC, Wii, Genesis, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and a PS3 all hooked up

hmmm, perhaps I could get around it
it would mean a slightly messier API
well, it actually wouldn't be that bad

@sweerpotato I also have this
The string actually snapped and it's not on my keychain any more... I know it's in my room but I don't know where :P

String operations are slow as molasses when you're doing 1.6 million of them.

5:55 PM
@undergroundmonorail make it yourself?

@sweerpotato No, I bought it online and found the keycap on a different site :P

my bots aren't tied anymore
fixed my bug :)

@undergroundmonorail Neat

@ThomasKwa I don't think so. The core of the challenge isn't about trying to compress text

Maybe we should have a tag

We have that tag.

"Classify a finite number of cases into true and false"
Wait, what?

Ha ha.
Anyways, I'd probably tag it like this:
If I'm understanding the challenge right.

6:24 PM
I don't think regex are required.

They will probably not even be the shortest solution.

@PhiNotPi thanks for your help, its faster
still slower than I want
but significantly faster

I don't really see the point of in general.

I just ran 100 rounds in appx 1 minute

6:26 PM
It seems to be more about genre than indicating the type of problem

But together with it shows exactly what kind of problem it is.

Should I translate the title into Lojban? That could be attention-getting

Or really confusing.
Maybe have both the english and lojiban title?

"¿xu drani gismu"

So like Lojiban (English)
@ThomasKwa That's the translation?
Damn. That's short.

6:31 PM
I'm trying to remember how to Lojban
"drani" means "correct'

has anybody used VisualVM before?

@quartata Lojban: the Pyth of spoken languages.
2

I'm getting some odd results

@Zgarb Not really

@ThomasKwa Yeah, from what I've read, it's more like Prolog.

6:33 PM
This is the quadratic formula, spoken aloud: fo'a jo'u ko'a jo'u ko'e jo'u ko'i vu'o noi mrena'u zo'u: ganai li no sumji (le poi'i pilji ko'a [le tenfa be fo'a bei li re] kei) (le pilji be ko'e bei fo'a) (ko'i) gi fo'a frinu nu'i (lo poi'i sumji ja vujnu [li ni'u mo'e ko'e] [le poi'i toltenfa fi li re fe {le poi'i vujnu (le tenfa be ko'e bei li re) (le pilji be li vo bei ko'a bei ko'i)}]) nu'u (le pilji be li re bei ko'a)
I just took it from here, but it doesn't look obviously wrong

lmao

See all those be/bei/be'o words?
Those separate arguments to a verb
I'm not kidding
The few people who speak Lojban (not me) need to remember which arguments go where.

Sounds fun
*un

For example, the word that means "to describe/one who describes" is:
skicu ski describe x1 tells about/describes x2 (object/event/state) to audience x3 with description x4
So it needs to be remembered that the audience is the third argument, and the description is the fourth argument.

Hello folks
I have an is-this-a-duplicate question:
1
A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

ETHproductionsPriming a Pristine World Heavily inspired by this challenge. Let's define a pristine prime as a number which is itself prime, but will no longer be prime if you remove any contiguous substring of N base 10 digits, where 0 < N < digits in number. For example, 409 is a pristine prime because 409...

vs.
21
Q: Find the largest fragile prime

Suboptimus PrimeConsider the function Remove(n, startIndex, count) that removes count digits from the number n starting from the digit at position startIndex. Examples: Remove(1234, 1, 1) = 234 Remove(123456, 2, 3) = 156 Remove(1507, 1, 2) = 07 = 7 Remove(1234, 1, 4) = 0 We will call the prime number X fragil...

6:44 PM
I think xu gismu morna or xu drani gismu morna might be better...

Second one is a code-challenge

@quartata Yes, but the concepts are very similar. Not sure if the final goals (shortest code vs. largest result) are enough to differentiate them.
Oh, mine requires input, so perhaps that'll help.

I think it's different enough.

@feersum WHARRRRRRRRGARBL FIXED

Could ask Martin, he's usually pretty good at dupe-sniffing

6:51 PM
OK, will do
@MartinBüttner What do you think about this situation?

appears to be about taking a list of inputs and sorting them into groups, rather than taking a single input and outputting its classification, though that is a fairly faint distinction, since the former is just a wrapper around the latter.

And my first challenge has been posted!

@quintopia I think both definitions are valid. At least I think I've used them both.

I give up. I think I'll achieve cold fusion before successfully configuring a modem in archlinux.
2

@quintopia Nope.

6:56 PM
@Zgarb I'd say Ithkuil could be the J of programming languages, because it has so many parts of speech.

@mınxomaτ Here's the problem with that
> arch linux
Why don't you change that to this
> anything but arch linux
Then your problem is fixed

@quartata Modem config is the same proc in every distro.
The one thing that is less confusing in Windows.

@mınxomaτ I was under the impression that ArchLinux doesn't have NetworkManager by default though.

@quartata wvdial and pppd are for modems, not netman. (Not directly anyway).

@feersum you are the usefulest test case generator in all of PPCG :D

6:59 PM
Just be glad I didn't give you the first one it output.
Some length 30 thing.

Q: ¿xu gismu morna? (Is it a valid *gismu*?)

Thomas Kwa(Literally: "Is implied-thing in the gismu form?") Premise The language Lojban is a constructed language, meaning in part that all of its words have been created rather than allowed to develop naturally. The semantic base of Lojban are its gismu, or root words, which were synthesized by combini...

@quartata Earlier today I was calling my ISP because pppd kept giving me an "ISP hung up" error. They didn't even know what pppd was. Well, I hung up on them.

lol
I swore NetworkManager had something for PPPD though

@feersum "it"?

My fuzz tester.

7:04 PM
@mınxomaτ Are you using a DE?
Or just headless?

@quartata A what?

Desktop environment.
Like GNOME.

@quartata Yes, LXDE.
The bare minimum everywhere, cause I only have ~300M RAM free.

I think NetworkAdmin (gnome-network-admin) has something for using modems with NetworkManager

So? It still just invokes pppd (or minicom).

7:07 PM
Right, but if you can't figure how to do it directly...

This is my machine, the part in the "GSM" section should work, but it doesn't: ac100.grandou.net/archlinux

Maybe it's worth a try to see if a GUI tool can help you

I know how it should work, but it doesn't work at all. (BTW: wvdialconf is the most user-friendly tool for arch). I can term into my modem with no problems, but there is a miscommunication with my ISP.

@feersum wow that was a really stupid bug
i'm surprised none of the cases on the challenge caught it

So you're using wvdial, right? Do you have stupid mode on?

7:13 PM
@feersum FIX'D

Or so you think.

I await your nest broken test case :P
you must have a working implementation of this problem in order to be able to determine which cases are misgraded

@mınxomaτ

Did you mean to say something?
Oh I see

hmm test case generator not turning up anything so far...

7:17 PM
@quartata Yes, yes.

I wanted to draw your attention to my previous message.

@ThomasKwa I'm trying to figure out what a correct Lojban title would be.

@quartata I tried all the configs :)

so it doesn't work with stupid mode on nor with it off?
Jeez. Sounds like a problem with your ISP, honestly.

@PhiNotPi Is it morna or semorna? I can't tell.

7:19 PM
@quartata The problem must be very specific because it doesn't even appear in the pppd logs. I also tried to manually config the modem using a minicom session and ran into the same problem

morna is pattern, but x2 is "pattern of forms/events".

@quartata Yeah, still trying to get a linux user on the support line for my ISP.
Sometimes I wish xkcd.com/806 was true.

:P

@ThomasKwa I'm thinking temorna

Is morna even the right word?

7:22 PM
Who knows?
I'm looking at this thing: lojban.org/jboski/index.php

I hope you get it working. I just looked up the Toshiba ac100 and it would be awesome if you could get an actual OS on that

@quartata I have been running arch for a long time on that thing. It's the perfect linux laptop to take anywhere. Light, reasonably fast GPU (,Android multiboot) and the battery lasts 10h minimum.

@mınxomaτ Have you ever tried it? It really does work :)

@ThomasKwa I'd love to answer your challenge, but I'm currently busy with another

termorna pe gismu maybe?

7:27 PM
@ETHproductions What situation exactly?

No wait, the pe gismu goes in the x3 place, and the thing we're asking about would be a morna

@Martin this

hi @MartinBüttner

@ETHproductions If that was a code golf, I'm pretty sure Peter would dupe hammer it, but as it isn't I don't think they are duplicates at all.

I think it may just be xu morna fi gismu

7:31 PM
Maybe xu le gismu cu te morna

la is an article for names

@MartinBüttner OK, thanks

that would mean 'thing named "gismu"'

@feersum can i get a copy of your tester? I have some ideas for golfing it, but I need to not break it while i do.

Okay, le then, maybe?

7:38 PM
And anyway, that means 'is gismu a form-follower"

so you're assuming itvs already a gismu
I like xu morna fi gismu
Wait, it should follow the structure of the gismu ideal not any particular thing that's a gismu
Eh, close enough for mow

@feersum thx m8

I'm getting close to my next KoTH
I'd appreciate any feedback with the spec or controller:

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

Nathan MerrillCode Bots 4 sheesh, is this really the 4th? For all you oldcomers, the core challenge is the same, but we are using Java instead of a custom language The goal of CodeBots is to make your bot as viral as possible. Each bot carries a Flag, and you need to make sure that your Flag is everywhere....

@ThomasKwa How exactly does the "implied thing" work grammatically?

7:41 PM
If you don't have an x1 to a selbri it becomes an "observative"
@Phi No wait, then x1 is assumed to be zo'o (unimportant/obvious) which isn't what I want
Good catch.

Is this sentence correct? xu ti cu morna fi le gismu
I feel like we need to have the le in there.
Maybe we can leave out the cu

Let me think about it
lo is generally preferred to le btw

Oh, yeah, I think there was some recent (by linguistic standards) change in convention about that.

@feersum so if i run it and it doesn't output anything for a long time, that means i'm still good?

7:59 PM
Does te gismu termorna mean (te gismu) termorna or te (gismu termorna)?
If the latter, I think that's good

I just found the first p12 in b3478/s167
At least the first one to make catagolue

8:34 PM
first what in what by what?
or in other words "first what in the by fuck?"

It's a period 12 oscillator in the life-like cellular automaton defined by the rule string B3478/S167
The first such oscillator in that particular rule to be submitted to catagolue.appspot.com
Of course, I currently hold 74.9% of the submitted objects for that particular rule anyway
Sorry, I misread the chart- it's actually only 74.5%
Not 74.9%.
Meanwhile, such an insane number of objects have been submitted for the B3/S23 rule that I doubt I hold even 1/100000 of those ones.
It would be cool if catagolue supported polychromatic rules
Hey guys, I'm goint to set my bot up again now
