Obviously this isn't very good but I'm just trying to see if that's what you are asking
@TimmyD You can do "ABCD
Is this most as in number of chars or number of different chars?
You don't have to close the quote in Foo
@Rainbolt Quick question since I am in a similar situation. Someone brought in donuts and I had one. I am now thinking I should eat another, but I am not sure the ramifications. Could you please clarify the consequences or judgments I may endure?
@Sp3000 most chars
Oh OK
14:01
"A"o <-- arbitrarily many, ><>
How about infinite chars ;)
Ok, finitely many ;)
"A"9* in CJam
outputs 9 A's
'Aes*
14:03
Ahaha nice one aditsu
es is about 1445004196877
actually, "A"K* outputs 20
grows every millisecond :p
@GamrCorps Even without es, you can do 'A99*
'BK*
14:04
You can? I tried to and it didnt work, let me try again
Golfed better
Oh, i was using ` instead of '
oops
you would need over 1TB of RAM though
and support for bigger arrays :p
@aditsu Damn out played
Nice one

in practice, I guess it's converting to int first, so you get something like 1895606619
14:10
Why would it convert to int first?
It would handle it as a BigInteger I thought
because you can't have arrays longer than 2^32 in java
Oh right
2^31 even
Oh I thought you meant the es
@SvenTheSurfer You'll get fat. If you are already fat, then you may suffer depression.
14:12
So * basically makes an array of the character over and over again?
Interesting
Odd. I've had two donuts in one day before and didn't get fat. I must be lucky or something.
And you're a dad? You are lucky.
Stress plus donuts = fat
Yea, the whole "dad-bod" thing never made an appearance here :D
Fat aside, it can be rude to take two donuts before everyone gets one
On balance, I don't feel my life is that much more stressful with a kid. Most likely that's just because he's still only eight.
14:24
My dad was an outdoorsy kind of guy who had an unreasonable hatred for video games despite my being a straight A student.
If you and your kid don't have that kind of friction, I can see why life would be less stressful
Like I said, he's only eight so far. We'll see what happens when he hits the teens. shudder
Disgust: What's "poo-ber-tee"?
I have not. Might check it out this weekend.
@aditsu while min(d):
Or is that too inefficient? :P

Q: Seamless conversion from square to hexagon

GeobitsFor many games played on a grid, hexagons are the Clearly Superior Choice™. Unfortunately, many free game art sites only have seamless tile sets for square maps. On a past project, I used some of these, and manually converted them to hexagons. However, I've gotten lazy in my old age. It should ...

How many narcissists does it take to change a lightbulb?
Just one. All he has to do is hold it in place while the world revolves around him.
How many kids with ADD does it take to change a lightbulb?
What is ADD? The opsite of SUBSTRACT?
The world needs to revolve in opposite directions for screwing the lightbulb on/off. Does that mean the narcissist has to hang upside down for one of them?
That wouldn't help much. It's the socket+lightbulb that would need to be turned upside down
15:30
So you'd need 2 narcissists of opposite polarity.
Well on the northern hemisphere you screw the bulb out (if convential lightbulbs are allowed anyway) and in the southern you would screw it in.
So you just have to get the narcissist to australia if you want him to screw it in, and everything turns out ok.
@feersum Or a single bipolar narcissist.

Q: Play the elimination game

ZgarbIntroduction In this challenge, your task it to simulate a certain type of elimination game. In the game, the participants stand in a circle, and eveyone is holding an integer. On each round of the game, every participant points at the person n steps to their right, if n is the number they are h...

@Rainbolt Little update, I ended up going for it. Upon my arrival at the box I discovered a and decided to consume it. This, I figured, was a great compromise.

"How many stage managers does it --" "Done!"
@flawr what the numel() does in matlab?
@AndréMuta number of elements in the list. (Note that matlab indices begin at 1 instead of 0)
a(numel(a)) returns the last element in the list.
@Sp3000 it took me a while to figure out what you're talking about :p you should comment on the answer
@MartinBüttner May I ask you to share the intermediate steps of the last example in the elimination game?
16:19
@MartinBüttner Nevermind, now it works.
I found my error.
Slight problem - How do I keep <pre> in and also use < in the code?
&lt;
?
Ah, thanks.
Why is the cake-cutting contest taking 8 hours to run?
I feel like that's just dragging it out.
2
@flawr looks like my R code also doesn't work in the last test cast.
have you fixed that?
16:25
Seems like ALittleOffTheTop is coming in around 7th place. I'll take that, for my first KotH entry.
@AndréMuta I forgot a -1 in the mod() argument.
I'm running it for that long because I want people to be able to change their bots
You want people to change them in between rounds?
I want people to be able to do it
I have it set up so it accepts new answers and stuff
You might have wanted to make that more clear. It sounds like you wanted them to update them between overall games:
> Each day, I will update the current scores so that people can upgrade their entry.

Also, my first proper entry (Eidetic) seems to be either 1st or second at the moment
Yea, metagaming and training with the current bots usually does pretty well. IMO it takes away from the strategy of it in some ways.
If the goal is to win against these bots, it works fine. If you're looking for a general strategy, it doesn't always work so well.
It feels especially cheap in this case, since you updated your training numbers right before starting the challenge. So, train it with the winning numbers aaaaand go!
I actually had those numbers yesterday, I stopped training it about 2pm (my time), It only got about 48 hours of training
And also, I just added RScript so a new entry was registered meaning that most of my training isn't for the most up to date set of entries
(I didnt give it any training with the additional answer)
Also sorry @geobits if you feel cheated, I didn't mean it like that
I don't have a bot in the race, so I don't personally feel cheated.
Well, at least my bot got some cake. Maybe he'll get more the next time
16:44
Yes, somebody answered the question I put bounty on! I feel as though I can sleep well now! :D
I love it when an answer starts with As far as I'm aware, this is within the rules.
@muddyfish Could you add a newline between each elimination of a player? It's hard to read.
I'm surprised I haven't seen an EmoBot™
umm...
I could do it in post?
or do you want me to try and change it now?

A: Loopholes that are forbidden by default

JustinSuicidal entries to King-of-the-Hill challenges. EmoWolf was funny the first time, but it's getting out of hand. 16:46
@muddyfish I dunno, I was just wondering. Don't feel obligated.
However, there are several answers there that I'd classify as suicidal, to be honest.
I have the controller in a while loop with some sleeping and some retrieval of new answsers
some of those were me testing the controller
Yeah, Im going to have that log in a pastebin with some stats like who won put in after its all done
@muddyfish Ah, cool!
done. the controller should now add newlines after each round
@muddyfish Yay thank you!
16:51
except it doesnt...
thats a bug...
You should try to keep bugs out of your cake.
I'll try and get it working for the next round then
^^
@muddyfish Your controller doesn't parse the pi symbol correctly FYI
I know it doesnt
it doesnt like unicode
Okay ^_^ Oh, I see. I don't like it either, haha \u3242
16:53
Ok found the bug
I was adding newlines to the other log file
There's another log file? o_o
Yay! My bot got cake :D
yeah. the log.log has too much random stuff in it.
I guess i'll make that available on the server as well
BTW: Would you agree making it a general requirement to explain the submitted code in code golf challenges?

Q: Can we make our answers more useful?

IsziThe overall goal of StackExchange is to help improve the Internet by building a community where information can be shared in a format that is useful to the world at large. Sure, this site is generally more of a "fun" SE than it is a "practical" one. But I see no reason why the answers here should...

A few opinions ^
Personally, I think it's always A Good Idea™ to add a clear explanation, but it would be tough to draw a line at what is "enough" if we made it a requirement.
My last answer's entire explanation was "Just uses the basic formula, nothing special" for instance, because I really didn't think it needed more. I didn't even add ungolfed code like I usually do because it was short enough that it didn't scroll horizontally.
17:05
Can someone help me out with what is wrong with my code?
Where is it? Maybe.

Why did you post it while knowing it didn't work right yet? o.O
> for some cases
Well yea... that means it doesn't work :P
17:08
I tought it wasn't working only in the last, but that wasn't true.
@AndréMuta stackoverflow.com ;-)
17:30
@AndréMuta Unless it works for all test cases, it isn't a valid answer and shouldn't be posted yet.
Got it, not happening again :)
Should I delete it? I think I am almost there
I deleted it already so it wouldn't continue to accumulate downvotes. Once you fix it and have it working as expected, you can flag it for undeletion.
@Zgarb How do you come up with such good challenges?
@Sp3000 I got 100 bytes now :)
17:39
@AlexA. I try to write down any challenge idea as soon as I have one, then let it be for a couple of days, and make a challenge if it's still good.
Sounds more thorough than my usual challenge prep :)
Well, for golfs at least. [code-challenge] and [king-of-the-hill] are a bit more effort.
I take challenge writing seriously.

@BetaDecay I don't see any.
@Optimizer i never checked out your spleen.
And I do not plan doing so in the foreeseable future.
@flawr and u stopped me from checking ur colon. thus my question
You can check out Nathell's spleen here: github.com/nathell/spleen
Spleeeeeeeeeeen
What a weird word...
@flawr BTW, do you still think my last test case may be wrong?
@Zgarb Spleen
18:12
@Zgarb nope
He fixed it
@Zgarb Nope, it is correct.
Ok, thanks.
The fun thing was that my program did some complete nonsense, but still got the output right for the rest of the test cases=)
Complete nonsense is the best kind of nonsense.
Do you mean NP-Complete nonsense?
18:17
I like my nonsense like I like my innuendo: NP-Hard.
Or complete, as every Cauchy sequence converges?
Most golfing languages result in Turing-complete nonsense.
I had a Turing bike once. Pretty expensive, but you could do just about anything with it.
I had a Turing incomplete bike once. It had no seat.
So you could cook ramen noodles?
18:22
You could but it took a while to figure out how.
@AlexA. Could yours sing at least 99 bottles of beer?
No, it could only get to 98 bottles of beer before it passed out on the bathroom floor.
Still, pretty impressive. Unless it's Milwaukee's Best. Then it's just sad.
Oh that reminds me of angry orchard's hard cider=)
Turns out it's nonalcoholic beer. But 98 bottles of anything is enough to make anyone sick.
@flawr There are much better brands of cider. :D
18:26
@AlexA. But those have such a nice etiquette label.
Etiquette?
I didn't realize hard cider could be polite or well mannered.
in some languages, a word that sounds like etiquette means label/sticker
And I just noticed that english isn't one of them.
Portuguese.
TIL: languages are weird.
18:27
But it also means etiquette.
Etiqueta = Etiquette or Label/Sticker
also French, Romanian and possibly other romance languages
translate: Etiqueta

Haha
Either way, some ciders are better mannered than others. At least where I'm from, it's considered rude to assault one's senses.
18:29
I actually think there is a meta tag called .
@Geobits Personally I love assaultingly hoppy IPAs. So many I wouldn't like Florida. :P
Survey: What ciders do you like? (Restriction: Only fluid ones, those who usually come in bottles.)
Hard ones
Soft ones
I'm more of a stout drinker, to be honest. I've had good ciders, but mostly local ones.
@flawr I'm actually not a huge fan of hard cider. My girlfriend likes it more than I do. But Washington is famous for its apples and we have some pretty damn good hard apple cider. We also have a company called Schilling that makes a pretty tasty grapefruit cider.
Grapefruit cider sounds insanely bad.
18:32
It's better than it sounds.
Do you like grapefruit mimosas?
Nah, not a mimosa fan in general though.
Or a grapefruit fan ;)
I agree that grapefruit sounds bad, but it actually tastes quite good.
@Geobits Haha well there you go. I can't imagine you'd enjoy grapefruit cider if you didn't like grapefruit. :P
@flawr Yes!
Do you mean cider or the actual fruit?
Never had grapefruit cider=)
But what is the price of a Schilling?=)
It probably costs more than a schilling but I'm not all that familiar with ridiculous currency.
18:36
Next time you're on the West Coast of the US you should try all the local Washington things. We have objectively the best beer, cider, and apples.
(Except Portland and Bend, Oregon, have some great beers... But Oregon is otherwise unredeemable.)
@flawr wut
@AlexA. Guess wut.
Wright.
18:38
These are the referees of an olympic track game, some years ago=)
They have quite a stack of referees. Seems like an unnecessary amount.

They have 1,964 referees?
You mean roughly two? I count 22.
I can only count to 2 D:
What comes after 2???

@aditsu I'm not familiar with this "5" of which you speak.

@flawr I can read Japanese, too ... understanding it is a different matter.
@flawr Only a bit
translate: あなたは日本人を読むことができますか
(from Japanese) You can read Japanese?
google translate mainly deals with standard written Chinese, which is quite different from Cantonese
18:54
Standard written == Mandarin?
@AlexA. If you are interested in planes and stuff I recommend visiting the Tillamook Air museum.
@AlexA. That... doesn't look right.
it's basically the written form of Mandarin, afaik
But only if you are already in that area.
It only has very few planes, but some nice historical stuff, bout their airships e.t.c.
many Chinese people practically speak and write different languages
18:56
@flawr Where's Tillamook?
日本人 means Japanese as in Japanese people (the last kanji is for people). You want 日本語 for the Japanese language.
@Geobits I agree, it does not. I think it's referring to actual Japanese people.

@BetaDecay Oregon

Cheese comes from a subset of dairy cows.
@flawr That doesn't help
18:57
Tillamook is in cows?
In the udders.
@AlexA. Ahh cool. I love Oregon
@flawr Seattle has one as well but I haven't been to it. I like the Smithsonian Museum with all the planes and space and shit in Washington, DC. (The other Washington.)
That's udderly ridiculous.
@BetaDecay Incorrect. You love Washington.
18:58
@TimmyD That's a beefy assertion.
@AlexA. It was just special to me as you could get up close to the planes. In every other museum all the planes had a fence or hung from the ceiling.
@flawr Join the air force. Lots of planes there :P
@Geobits I'd steak money on it.
@AlexA. Oh, alright I like the non-city part of Washington
> steak money
18:59
What is a "rollover"?
In SE?
@TimmyD A bet? No thanks, I'm kinda cow-ardly.
@VTCAKAVSMoACE You mean rollback?
@Geobits No thanks, they crash their planes here all the time.
@flawr That explains a few things :)
The Swiss Air Force crashes their planes? >.>
