this is screaming duplicate codegolf.stackexchange.com/q/37992/8478
I remember an aphorism and a sonnet challenge, but nothing that general
(not that "more general" makes it any better)

Q: Can I propose a contest for my own "programming language"?

William FernandesI have a custom CPU emulator, with 44 instructions (opcodes), and I would like to challenge you guys to code a better kernel for it (current one is a simple command interpreter with 3 commands: HELP, EXEC and QUIT). Can I?

Why is this chatroom called "The Nineteenth Byte"? What's special about 19?

@AndoDaan In (real) golfing "The Nineteenth Hole" is the pub you go to after golfing. (Fun fact: The Nineteenth Byte has 19 bytes.)

@MartinBüttner Ah, very clever. Thanks!

blueberries taste like regular berries ;c

@MartinBĂĽttner berry-y
think miniature apple with some vinegar in it

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

Beta DecayFind the Molecule code-challenge Introduction Finding a molecule from a formula is like completing a jigsaw puzzle without the picture: it takes a long time for a human to do it but a computer can do it quicker. What you have to do is, given a chemical formula, output the molecular structure ...

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

Beta DecayThe World in the Future popularity-contest In the future, the world will change, there's no doubt about it. For that reason, you have to produce a realistic map of the world n years in the future. The number n should be the number of years in the future and can be input via STDIN or argv. The ...

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

WillMake a Ray Tracer Ray tracers are famously small enough to fit on a business card! Code and explanation here. Tired of seeing ray tracers that just render a spheres or a sphere and a box and, if you're lucky, a torus? This challenge addresses this. This task is to codegolf a ray tracer that ...

I find this new wave of users over last couple of weeks, who think "everything goes" on PPCG, and that they (being the community) should be able to decide that by popular demand, very disquieting.
I think we may have to actually try to convince them that there's benefit in not allowing everything that's popular on here, or they may eventually gather enough momentum to build up enough votes to decide any form of community consensus in their favour.

@MartinBüttner I think you're mistaking "majority" for "consensus"
however, since we mostly do things by majority around here, yes, that's a problem with social groups that are self-defined. they can be re-defined as they grow, and "taken over"
it happens with subreddits. it happens to real world clubs and organizations.

7:51 PM
yes, but it would be sad if SE would be turned into reddit because the majority decides so

I am on the verge of posting this Sandbox question as a popularity contest and I am asking myself whether I should really put that many restrictions on a popularity contest. On the other hand, these restrictions ensure that the respective program is at least somewhat useable.
Also, I am wondering whether it would be harmful to promise a bounty to the shortest solution.

@PeterTaylor: What is your concern with the lava-lamp–webcam combo? You cannot assume the webcam to be directed at the lava lamp. But you can assume them to be in the same room, which is reasonably lit and not stuffed with light-absorbing material. So they will be able to interact with each other. (By the way, I actually considered something like this.)

It's the obvious approach, and it's not obviously excluded.

I would not consider it that obviuos (but also not that original, but in a popularity contest that would be on the voters to decide). Why exactly would you think that the hardware constraint permits it?

@MartinBüttner the only way to stop it from happening is to either be unpopular or to decide, now, that we value the current state of affairs over the wishes of future users, and make that a policy. and even then it could change as the moderators change.
I saw this happen to /r/playdate on reddit, with gamers who like new games taking over what started as a classic multiplayer gaming sub
