A: Proposed Question Sandbox - Mark XIV

James_picSave The Last Bullet For Yourself Suddenly zombies appear! OH NOES! In this king-of-the-hill challenge, you must create a bot to survive the zombie apocalypse. Or at least, hold out for as long as possible. At the start of the game, 50 competitors will be placed randomly in a large toroidal pl...

@MartinBüttner You're name changed!
@MartinBüttner Whenever you wake up, you'll have to tell me how to pronounce that. Is it like BWETT-NERR?
Whenever I read Peter Taylor, in my head it sounds British. Petuh Tayluh.

6:10 AM
Omg I finished compiling

6:50 AM
Entries start to drop out around round 100 - 150. They can't handle the heat!

7:07 AM
Oh man it's getting heavy. We passed round 500 without anyone dropping!

7:45 AM
Made it to 800 XD. Each round is taking over 10 seconds at this point, and yet none of the remaining entries have timed out.

8:41 AM
Some jerk in pod 2 timed out >:-(

1 hour later…
10:07 AM
Eeeeek names keep changing O_o
It would be really evil if I just decided to change my name to user3808

10:22 AM
@Doorknob along with your avatar of course :D

Heh, and then find some way to hide my diamond so it looks like some random new user hacked SE or something. :P

@Doorknob simple, make your name from the other Poker card Unicode icons, and no one will think the diamond is from being a mod :P
you'll have more trouble with removing the blue from your name in chat ^^
@Rainbolt Not quite ^^... there's not really an equivalent vowel sound in English... I'll let you know if I come up with something (or find a video)... in the meantime, why don't you use my first name? :P
@Rainbolt also, I'm pretty sure my Rebel was before Trimsty's

Yeah, Thunderbird, I just don't think that's right for some reason

@Rainbolt in fact, mine was a day earlier ^^
but anyway, don't bother changing it again if it's too much trouble
@Doorknob wat?

oh wow that screenshot annoys me so much... every time I open this tab I think there's a stray tooltip thing floating around...

Q: Having a good idea for a challenge but lacking the skill to manage it, what do I do?

overactorI feel like I have a cool idea for a king-of-the-hill challenge but I seriously lack the skill to host such a challenge, what should I do? I could of course post it to the sandbox as suggested here, but what should I expect then? For someone to get interested in the challenge and take over by ac...

1:29 PM
I just posted the above meta question, the challenge I have in mind is a king of the hill challenge about dog fighting planes in a discrete 3D space. I have a lot of the specifics of the rules worked out myself and would love to share them, but if someone were to take it upon themselves to make this challenge happen, you can of course decide how to change things when it comes to it.

A: Proposed Question Sandbox - Mark XIV

overactorDogfight Important note This is a king-of-the-hill challenge and I don't possess the required knowledge or skill to run this challenge; I'm posting this draft here essentially to find someone to either very intensively help me or rather take this challenge off my hands and make it happen (with ...

As you can see, I added it to the sandbox, if you're interested, go and have a look.

> NW, ST and NED come to mind as possible examples of directions;
@overactor What's the direction T?

5:44 PM
@ProgramFOX I believe he mixed it up with "up" (possibly "top"?)
@overactor there are 26 directions though instead of 24 ;)
you should also specify that "diagonally touching" (with reference to the cubes) doesn't include diagonally through the cube, because the faces are actually all touching diagonally
and the direction in which the planes start

6:11 PM
@ProgramFOX oops, that should have been U for up in stead of T for top
@MartinBüttner All good points, I'll get on it

So we made it through the night after running 9000 rounds, and 3 people timed out or threw an exception. Time to do it all over again!

@Rainbolt how long did it take?

I didn't time it
I changed the controller so that it just continues when an exception is thrown. It logs the name of the class, the round it failed on, and why it failed (sort of). Then it just keeps going
That way, I can quickly weed out those who throw exceptions in round 900+
So now I'll just rerun it with three less participants :)

how many are left? :D

@MartinBüttner 67

6:20 PM
oh, there are quite a few out already

So ten total have been eliminated. However, the remaining 67 have already been vetted through 1000 round trials
So I don't expect many more to drop

what do you actually need 9k for? isn't a game just 1k rounds?

Shuffle. Break into three pods. Run trials. Repeat two more times. Average scores.
Some players may be "following" another player's actions. If I leave them in the same pod, they will do equally as bad or good as they did before

oh, I see what you mean
I read that as "3 people timed out after 9000 rounds" (of a single game)
btw, how late was it last night when you decided that 9 July was before 8 July? :P

Huh?

The submissions were sorted by activity :(
Whoops

and mine were all edited with syntax highlighting ^^
don't worry

Time to go running

Thanks. starts the battle between Good and Evil

6:29 PM
@Rainbolt just a quick question, did my entry make it in this time already or was I just too late?

7:14 PM
@overactor Let me check
@overactor It didn't make it in yet. But you and someone else have submitted entries already so there is no doubt that I'll be running trials again. Now that I have it mostly automated, I think I can just run trials every day. It takes about 6-7 hours to run a single test.
Shower, Food, MTG! (I know all of you are totally interested in how my day is going)

7:42 PM
@Rainbolt i'd like to get into mtg but i hear it's an expensive hobby
lol

8:04 PM
@Trimsty it is :-/

@MartinBüttner weeeelll, the piano was really expensive too, so...

@Trimsty that's a one-off expense though :P

@MartinBüttner not when the salesman sold you the wrong stand.

sure, but it's still less dangerous financially...
with trading card games you just keep spending money in small amounts

@MartinBüttner xD
so it's like smoking? o_o

8:20 PM
Apparently I have to go to bed now :/
bye

@MartinBüttner I don't think I spent more on M:tG than most people spend on going to the cinema. And I have the theoretical possibility of selling my cards to get some of the money back. It's not free, but it doesn't have to be expensive.

1 hour later…
9:29 PM
@PeterTaylor Yeah that's true you do gain some value from it that you might sell later. But if you keep playing actively then you don't tend to do that.

10:14 PM
meh I hate that I have to click "Done" when reviewing "First Posts" even though I have already taken some action... otherwise it's not actually counted, but I still can't open it again in the review queue :-/
