A: We need to take an official stance on code trolling

m.buettnerTL;DR: Get rid of code trolling - in a reasonable way and for the benefit of the community. I am not a fan of code-trolling, but I thought I'd give this tag a fair trial. So instead of just saying "I don't like it, code trolling is the worst, delete ALL the questions", I'll try to justify my pos...

holy moly, that got a lot longer that I expected... off to bed now...

@TheDoctor Done, done and done.

Aaaand they're all gone

That's like saying "hmm, let's post programming questions on Cooking Stack Exchange so that there are more posts." Quality > Quantity, especially when the posts are so low quality that we don't even want them here. Would you rather have 100 banana peels and 10 strawberries (which smell like rotten banana), or just the strawberries? The Area 51 requirements are guidelines, and dumping a bunch of "filler" posts on the site isn't going to help (in fact, it will tear apart the community even more and be detrimental to the site). — Doorknob 17 hours ago

@TheDoctor Shouldn't we keep it alive to avoid it to be reposted?

3:36 PM
@TheDoctor I agree with ProgramFox. The point of the question is to gather a consensus on the community's stance on code trolling. Downvoted pro code-trolling posts are just as expressive as upvoted con code-trolling posts (in fact, so are posts the other way round!). Let's keep the process for "taking an official stance" fair.

Q: May the 4th be with you!

QuincunxIn honor of Star Wars day, write a program to display the following text, scrolling like the Star Wars opening crawl: It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the b...

10:01 PM
@Quincunx Very interesting! I'm working on it.

@Quincunx Yep, I like it. Although I find the order of the requirements a bit weird. I probably would have put them roughly in reverse order but that's just personal preference. ;)

10:33 PM
@m.buettner The order is roughly the order that I thought of them in. :-). I figured that since the list is a bulleted list and not a numbered list, it would be fine.

Do we need to close/delete this: codegolf.stackexchange.com/q/26078/16472 ?

Q: Unique Base 64 Incrementor With Substituion

6ft DanThe goal is to write a script that will use your (Base 64) numbering system and never repeat any character within the string while incrementing. When you rollover a big number that jumps to the next place value you need to substitute it with the next unique in place... example (in Base 10) 0985,...

should we delete?
I understand it now. Voting to reopen

@PeterTaylor regarding your meta comment about the allrgb question. If that was too vague, how do you propose should image-processing challenges be asked, as it's near impossible to define an objective criterion for what makes a submission valid?

11:04 PM
@m.buettner Sorry, I'm off to bed now so I'm not going to hang around for an answer, but at least two of the three most recent questions have pretty tight specs.

11:22 PM
@PeterTaylor okay I suppose the one that doesn't is the dithering one. The steganography one falls in a slightly different category of challenge (in my opinion), because it's not about the visual result but just about implementing a given steganography technique which happens to use pictures. the miniature faking one is good though I agree. but at the same time I'm not that the all rgb question really needed more than "make an image with all colour values; vote by visual appeal of the results".
in particular I don't think it's like restricting the kind of image/algorithm further would leave room for future (slightly different) allrgb questions which would still be interesting. so I think it was absolutely valid to just shoot for "generate the most interesting allrgb picture you can". I do see your point though that there is some room for a tighter spec while still leaving room for creative freedom.

Q: Bring out the inner llama of a sentence

The WobbuffetYour objective is to take input like Pie is good. I just ate a bunch of pies early this morning. Actually, it was closer to the afternoon. Mornings are good. and create an array of the indexes of the string where the letters that make up the word "Llama" appear (one of each in order). For ...

Fun!

I especially like that he chose the word "llama" :D
