Okay, I posted the current draft of the KotH in the sandbox now. It became quite a wall of text. :-/ meta.codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/1618/8478
@Rusher ^
@Geobits ^
:D, the post ID is 1618... should have waited with my other sandbox post until now

Anyone that wants to review my challenge in the sandbox?

@ProgramFOX I don't know, I think it looks fine... it' just not something I'd personally be interested in. You might want to tell people to test their submissions in chatrooms they open themselves, unless you want them to spam the room where you want to do the official tests in.

6:38 PM
hey guys :D

hey

Did you figure out that vim thing the other day?

biome intensity map generated by my world generator
@luserdroog indeed ;3
so there'll also be a scale mechanism attached to the generator and i'll probably rewrite in java as python is way to slow for these things
generating the first 256x256 heatmaps for 5 biomes took ~10 minutes
there'll be 2 overlay maps, one on the general terrain height as a sort of stripped down biome to indicate oceans, as well as one on the biome metalayer to give the illusion of grouped smaller, similar biomes
no idea how i'm going to do water yet
maybe just a fixed y level
which means it'll take ~30 minutes to generate a 256x256 portion of the map...

What's this for, a game?

6:46 PM
what's your source for the map? some fixed height data or noise or...?
@luserdroog a KotH I think

and i have to compress the block files, at 256x256 they're currently 664 kb--
Yeah, it's a KoTH,
@m.buettner it's a PRNG with an attached blur mechanism is all
the seed for the prng is based off of the coordinates of the point
makes tiling a lot easier

Huh, I wouldn't expect a PRNG alone to produce larger blobs (even if blurred)

yeah, it usually just produces perlin-noise-like heightmaps but i made a (very volatile) contrast function
today was a productive day ;D

ah okay
do you have previous experience in procedural content generation?
(or terrain specifically)

nope
i've played with very basic terrain things before, but never 3D

6:50 PM
well it's still a height map (which makes it a 2D terrain imo ^^)
I tried building a terrain generator once, but I never got really decent results

(which is probably why i have to make a scale function to get larger blobs instead of being able to change some params)
yeah, i guess it's still 2D
but by "not 3D" i meant platformer-style

I did implement a 3D terrain generator as well, which looked a lot better, but I never got the chunk-based rendering algorithm to work
oh okay

heh :3
i haven't looked into true 3D much

it's really interesting but insanely complicated

in the game, there are specific building types that you can make if you have the resources, then you can place it and it builds itself, so i don't have to worry about people modifying the terrain

6:53 PM
I'm always amazed by this blog

bookmarked

do you know shamus young's blog? he had 3 blog series about height-map terrain. when I tried implementing the 2D terrain, I was going by the third of those, but I must have missed or misunderstood some detail, because my results never looked as natural as his. one two three

i don't really get out in the blogosphere :P i'll bookmark those too

well it's all just stuff I came across while googling for "how do I terrain"

xD
i haven't actually done any 3d at all, let alone procedural generation

7:00 PM
ah okay

is nooby programmer, tries to write mmorpg dominated by robots

well good luck!

i'd port to java now (so scare) but i've been busy with this basically the whole day
gonna check for some suitable pcg questions and resign to some Spore

it's a shame how dead PPCG is on weekends.

Normally I'd be on but I'm at a con
I got a couple minutes to kill so I'm making sure I don't lose my progress for Fanatic :P

@undergroundmonorail that would be horrible ;)

I'm going to migrate this one. Any opnions to the contrary?

@Doorknob to where? CS?

I was thinking SO at first, but yeah, maybe CS would be a better option
Or maybe Programmers? I'll ask their mods
... or maybe the OP just deleted it? :P

9:47 PM
@Doorknob that solves the problem
btw I'd really value your input on the KotH proposal in the sandbox (if you can bothered to read that wall of text ;) )

Sorry, really busy right now. Trying to work on a school project, handle modstuffs, and install Ubuntu simultaneously. :P

Oh, never mind. I suppose this might hang around the sandbox for a while anyway before I start working on the controller.

Q: Spoiler code and text doesn't appear at the same time

Paul DraperCode and text don't appear at the same time. It's a bit odd, and Code Golf uses code in spoiler text perhaps more than any site on the SE network :)
