Q: Why is Code Golf a Stack Exchange site?

Arturo Torres SánchezI'm fairly new to the Stack Exchange network, and I really like the Q&A format used here, which is very clear to read and to use. I started exploring all the sites, and I found there's a Code Golf site (http://codegolf.stackexchange.com), but it doesn't seem to be a Q&A site, but rather a contes...

^ If nobody's answered that well in a day or so, I'll take a crack at it. I figure I should let the people who've been here longer get first shot :)

@Geobits Wow, how can that even bother people?
"What's this? There are people having fun on our network? We have to get rid of that!"

I mean... we're not campaigning against Parenting.SE either, right?

Why is the oldest date you can set your birthdate as 01/01/1920? What if you're older?

12:28 PM
It doesn't seem like a good format, but I'm not sure why

I have no idea what's going on

Well, I do. It's technically a challenge, and I know the answer. But there is only 1 answer.
Basically, you take the assembly code, and figure out what it is doing
then you take the result, convert it into ascii, and do that for each line
answer is 3197K
but I don't want to answer it because it seems like homework and it doesn't seem like a good challenge

12:49 PM
@NathanMerrill Well the question's only one close vote away from being closed, so now's the time to answer, but personally I wouldn't.

added a vote :P

There should be a restriction that you cannot ask a question on PPCG until you get a reasonable score on an answer. That would prevent so many low quality questions from being asked.

@BetaDecay Speaking for those who mainly ask questions, I think a user can ask good questions before answering any ;)

@Calvin'sHobbies You're not exactly very representative though :D
(unfortunately)

I think I am going to start designing a simple CPU.

@PhiNotPi Is there any reason for it or just for fun?

just for fun.
It will probably follow the transport-triggered architecture approach, which is the most basic way ever.

Hmm nice. Will you just design it or go ahead and build it?

TTA is a type of architecture in which every instruction is MOV, such as MOV 23 46 to move data from address 23 to 46 (or 46 to 23 depending on how you interpret it).
The problem I'm currently trying to solve is figuring out how to allow the computer to access data at locations longer than its word length.
If it's simply an eight-bit computer, then that's only 4 bits per memory location (not enough).
A 32 bit computer could access 65536 memory locations, but then I would have to create every to work with 32 bits.

@BetaDecay @professorfish could I ask you to stop closing golfing advice questions as off-topic?

I've been staring at a blank screen for about half an hour trying to figure out how to make relative addressing work.

@MartinBüttner Yeah, sure... What was the latest one that I close voted?

@BetaDecay sorry, apparently you actually chose another reason. I thought SE only displays a single reason if the split is 4:1, but it may have been 3:1:1 instead

Oh yeah.. I think I chose unclear what is being asked

hm, interesting
I thought for a 3:2 split, SE would display both reasons

2:46 PM
Hm. Strange.. Is that supposed to happen?

@MartinBüttner Sorry, I forgot we changed our policy on those

4:21 PM
@PhiNotPi wouldn't 8-bit words allow 8 bits for addressing a location (pretty much by definition of wordsize)? So 256 memory cells for 8-bit and 2³² for 32-bit

5:20 PM
@FireFly The most straightforward way of implementing it would make it so that each memory location can store either a number or an instruction. Each instruction would be composed of two numbers half the length.
So if a memory location can store a 32-bit number, the instructions can only contain 16-bit numbers.

6:07 PM
Ah, right, mov machine
@PhiNotPi I think having instructions be two machine words would be simpler. You can fetch both memory locations (PC and PC+1) in parallel, and I think it simplifies slightly in that you don't have to zero-extend the addresses (not that it makes much of a difference)

Last night I got in on the manual synchronization of two tags on SO, and earned almost 100 rep.
I am now above 500 and can review first posts and late answers!
I am also well on my way to another Yearling badge with this and my other participation. I may already qualify for it rep-wise.

I guess I'd better get humping to get to 3K so I can go through the 11K CloseVote queue.
I'll get the Reviewer badge for sure.
Actually, I'll probably get the Steward badge pretty fast.

Ahhh, I hit the limit of 20 first posts, and there are 13 more!
Now I can't work toward the silver/gold reviewing badges for a couple of hours.
:(
I guess that means other people can, though.

Q: Default for Code Golf: Input/Output methods

Martin BüttnerIt looks like we have a consensus that we want certain defaults for code golfs, in the format answers are expected in. On that poll, the question arose twice, which input/output formats should be allowed for programs and functions. So here is another poll. This one works different though. All th...
