@DamkerngT. Hi, Could you help me solve a qustion? link:youtube.com/watch?v=skM37PcZmWE how did the narrator speak "second adventures"? I only hear: secon d ventures. I don't know if I am right.
@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. I need your help too. Thank you!
@OscarLiu Right here
Hi,M.A.R.
@OscarLiu Without clicking on the link, I can tell you the potential reason.
That's what happens when we talk fast.
"Second" loses its "d".
I can hear there is no 'd', the problem is that I hear another sound right after the nasal sound /n/. Sounds like /ŋ/ or /g/
secon * *is what I can't hear
05:51
OK lemme get my handsfree device.
Oh BRB
Thank you very much MAR, you are so nice.
06:05
@OscarLiu I hear a /d/. O_o
You mean seconds 3–7, right?
yeah,the very beginning part
I just hear a longer /n/ than usual.
It's like "60 seconnn - dadven - turesan - thought".
You hear a /d/? you mean the narrator say second rather than secon? oh,my terrible ear
@OscarLiu He does say "second", but he says "seconnn" then pronounces the "d" and the rest.
My ear....
06:10
@OscarLiu Meh, it's usually because of the speakers or what.
I have trouble in hearing things like this.
Anyway, thank you very much MAR
You are from Iran??? How could your English be so good?
@OscarLiu I'm from Iran alright, but I wouldn't say my English is good, except when I'm filling a resumé. :)
Is English your mother tongue? I hope my English can reach your level:)
No, I'm just a nonnative speaker, as is @Dam.
Oh, by the way, what is the difference between ELL and ELL meta?
06:17
His English is way better than me though, and that's cheating, 'cause he's a robot.
@OscarLiu The meta sites in all of SE sites are meant to address and discuss the policies of the site.
A robot?:)
You two are very nice, you really help me a lot. Thank you very much
So when you have a question about how stuff on ELL goes, you ask on meta.ELL.
Everything else about learning language goes on ELL.
@OscarLiu True story.
OK, Thank you
I gotta go, bye!
See you around!
Ugh, that's what @Dam would say. I'm transforming into him. O_O

@Ϻ.Λ.Ʀ. :-)
@OscarLiu He really said "sixty second adventure in thought".
Listening to another language can be tricky, mostly (in my opinion) depending on how much the second language is different from your first language, and at what age you start learning it.
(The more different it is, the more difficult. The later you start, the more difficult.)
There are a handful of things that could be useful if you "know" about English phonology, but you will need to practice and train your ear anyway.
(MAR's explanation is pretty good!)

Q: If comments are not for extended discussion, why do seasoned users use them for this?

GoDucksI am confused by this issue. Consider the question Is "murder" a noun or verb in "Mr Putin is guilty of conspiracy to murder"? and look at the comments following this answer. At this moment there are eleven back and forth comments constituting an extended discussion. I don't get it. Is it ok...

Q: there is a "bad question" on ELL I'm wondering why It's bad

Sam HarringtonI up-voted this question on ELL and the question got down-voted and looks like it's going to be closed. I was told it's a bad question and I shouldn't have up-voted it, why? I find the words 'effective' and 'affective' confusing. Most of the times, I fail to use them correctly. When should ...
