Q: Duplicate and on-hold questions

Ruchir MWhenever we go through questions on this platform, we find a few duplicate and/or on-hold questions that have few or no answers. At times, such questions can be a cause of distraction and disinterest for the users like us who want a solution for every little language-related difficulty. IMO, a...

Hi
@Rathony Hullo!
Welcome to the Cabin!
You are all here
Well, it's hard to define "all".
I didn't know this room exists
Yeap, but recognizable users
Almost all of the meta regulars tend to visit chat.
Except Colleen and mods, who are busy anyway.
07:54
Is this exclusively for ELL?
Nihilist_Forest was talking about me. huh?
@Rathony All kinds of discussions are allowed. This chatroom isn't restricted in that sense.
I see.
Regarding the issue I raised yesterday,
But its main site is ELL, so it's coordinated towards ELL stuff.
I believe it has been discussed in one way or another
I see
@Rathony Oh. Thank god you visited.
@Rathony Of course, almost everything in child metas has been discussed in Meta Stack Exchange.

Q: What can I do when getting "We are no longer accepting questions/answers from this account"?

ArjanDo not repost the question you were about to ask until you have READ EVERYTHING WE ARE ABOUT TO TELL YOU. While trying to ask a question, one could get: We are no longer accepting questions from this account. See the Help Center to learn more. Likewise, for answers: We are no longe...

07:56
But the issue I see is there is not much guidance and warning.
@Rathony There's not much warning that you can see.
The shame is never public.
Because it is done systematically?
I see.
Is the guy suspended?
IIRC the user commented and said "please don't ban me from asking. I can't learn English any other ways" or something along those lines and I replied with that link above.
So as I said, the only thing we can do is voting fairly.
07:58
Oh, the warning was sent by e-mail or message
I don't believe in fair voting. It is just toy
to play with for users
What?
I mean voting doesn't work that way
Just because ELL's voting is bad doesn't mean voting is bad.
08:00
Right. I can't agree with you more.
The problem is the majority of the audience this site attracts.
So the guy promised he would post a better question in the future.
Learners who can't decide what's good and what's bad content.
Don't get me wrong; I'm a learner too, but I try to vote when I know what I'm voting for.
Yeap, I don't raise this issue for new users. Never
It's not SO where you can paste a code into the compiler and see it work.
08:02
The guy was a member for 2 years and 9 months
Well, that's not important.
How many days they visited is.
I saw Mari-Lou A ask him to accept some helpful answers.
Yeah, but what can you do?
He never accepted any single answer. I think that's not good. You can't force it though
Exactly
@Rathony There used to be accept rates.
08:03
Give him advice and warning. guidance. edit. write a better question in the comment, etc.
People accepted stuff even when they shouldn't have.
So they removed it.
You can't control people's behavior at all.
But I think they can be guided.
@Rathony Not warning, but advice. Looking hostile is only gonna be a lose lose.
You can't control all the drivers and prevent them from causing car accidents.
Yeap. I understand.
Everything goes back to the fact that when you're writing, your tone isn't obvious.
08:05
I see.
Mix that with some lack of fluency in the language, and voila.
BTW some chat FAQ stuff @Rathony if you're gonna hang in the future: You can do many things by hovering over a chat message.
Clicking the down arrow to the left will give you the option of editing the message, two minutes of it being posted.
@Rathony note that everything we write here is Googleable and public, so don't give out personal info etc.
I don't think I will visit this room very often though.
No problems with that.
Just giving you a chat intro.
08:08
But now I know where I can find you.
BTW, what is your role in StackExchange if you don't mind?
I usually am here. Just when you needed to talk to me or anyone else, type @.
You said you are not a mod
@Rathony I'm a regular user.
But you don't have high rep points. I don't mean it is important
If I were a mod my name would've been displayed in a blue color in chat.
@Rathony Yeah, I don't ask or answer a lot.
I do edits, meta stuff etc.
08:09
I see.
What is the problem with the tagging in ELL?
Most questions were tagged wrongly?
Are tagged wrongly.
We have the worst tags in the world.
[meaning], [grammar], [usage], [tense] etc. are very broad tags and not useful at all.
Don't even get me started about [difference].
But they're the most popular tags.
How about EL&U?
So I'm doing a French Revolution here, just with less massacre afterwards.
@Rathony ELU's got bigger problems than tags.
ELU's tangs seem all right to me.
I'm sure you read their meta.
08:11
I don't go to meta very often.
All politics and stuff
Not always. :)
So the thing is, question quality matters to them.
1/5th of our questions used to be tagged with [grammar].
When it's a much less ratio for them, it's good.
You said the same is never public
Do you really think so?
After what has been done to me in Meta?
It happens rarely.
@Rathony I did not agree with that.
You can never control the quality of questions.
The ELU thingy, I didn't even follow the trace of.
08:14
It's like trying to prevent car accidents
@Rathony Yes, but you can make it such that good questions get answered and bad questions removed.
The message starting with @Rathony will be gone in 2 minutes, you meant?
What?
I didn't get it when you said about putting @ before username
And I see some messages start with @Rathony
I don't get it how it works
When you press @, you can press tab and mention my name.
@Rathony Aha. That's because I use the "reply" function.
08:16
I see
Anyway, I do my part.
Hover over a message, it's on the right. (Your right, not the computer's)
Nice talking to you. I learned a lot.
I deleted my comment in your Meta question.
Good luck with the tagging issue.
Thanks!
Hope to see you here in the future!
Yeap. Why not?
See you around. Thanks.

What is the meaning of: "Nowadays it is only the unreadable that occurs?"?
Context, please.
I take it that you understand every word in the sentence.
The sentence shouldn't be too difficult for you, I think.
Let me give you full sentence.
So it must be the context.
?
LORD ILLINGWORTH. I was merely talking to Mrs. Allonby about the leading articles in the London newspapers.
LADY HUNSTANTON. But do you believe all that is written in the newspapers?
LORD ILLINGWORTH. I do. Nowadays it is only the unreadable that occurs. [Rises with MRS. ALLONBY.]
Hmm... that sounds old.
10:02
Could you explain the meaning?
Unreadable could mean two things, imo.
So it depends on what the leading articles were all about.
"in my opinion"
Ahh... Oscar Wilde
I think it is something about "the news, what you don't want to read"
that*
Yes :D
And meaning of this one too: One can survive everything nowadays, except death, and live down anything except a good reputation.
@VikasKumar Sounds reasonable.
10:05
Meaning of live down something?
I'm not sure about this live down.
:O
I thought is is very simple for you.
Considering the name of the writer, it's not safe to treat words as they are.
10:07
How do I learn the meanings of such sentences? I'm stuck on many sentences and it's not easy to ask the meaning of each of them here.
To deal with this kind of work, you have to read into the text, to understand the subtle meaning.
read into the text?
As usual, the context (in the story) helps.
For example, live down is usually used with negative things (as opposed to live up), but this one is "live down anything except a good reputation".
Does the character (in the story) mean that everything but a good reputation is considered negative to him (or her)?
Only the story can tell.
10:12
Can't say.
See, that's why we can't or at least should avoid reading this kind of work superficially, or straightforwardly, because it wasn't written that way.
Also, I think English before 1900 was a little different.
I think I got it :D
No one would want to lose a good reputation.
Live down = Not doing something or ignoring. I guess so.
Are you reading the entire play?
