Nah. It was the radios. Font width is too small a detail for a screenshot
@Arrowfar Hi. Everybody's manning the walls against a troll.
Firefox, Chrome
@jimsug See? Font width.
16:02
Are we flagging these as offensive even when they're not because they're still mimicing Nathan? Or should I use a custom flag reason?
user116848
@StoneyB Yes I see that. How can I be of help?
@Arrowfar Many flags
user116848
Lots is going on. Hmm.
We're getting linked to things in here, flag them
Hmm
16:02
(if it's worth it)
user116848
@ArtOfCode I see. Okay, I will.
Well, the custom flags won't fix themselves.
And I don't think J.R. is around right now.
@ArtOfCode lol
dammit
I did that here earlier.
Nobody saw me use a secret chat feature that doesn't work here, did they? Good.
16:04
How charming.
At least they're not "Iranian" anymore.
And there goes the pretense of being a non-native speaker.
Stoney and Damkerrg will be able to keep flagging a little longer than the rest of us
So will I. ᕙ(⇀‸↼‶)ᕗ
I have to go to class. :(
I mean because of their extra flags.
Wait, is it still 1 extra flag per 1k rep up to 20?
16:07
BTW @Art is that secret feature mod-only?
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M What secret feature?
@jimsug Oh, is it a thing? I thought flags was based on your flagging history?
@jimsug What secret feature?
@Catija It's a thing.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I don't know, actually - but it's only active in a secret mod room, so there's no point trying or finding out :)
There's a new question but I missed grabbing the link and I can't see it until it pops up.
16:07
Not that I told you that, it's secret.
@ArtOfCode Aha. That makes sense.
@ArtOfCode What's a secret?

Q: On the recent changes to flagging and limits

martin claytonLooks like flagging has been affected by releases today: are these intended affects? Higher daily limits (appear doubled for me, flagging of posts limit also doubled) Explained by Shog9 below. Soft comment deletion doesn't appear to work anymore - e.g. for "accept rate" obsolete comments - it d...

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Nothing
Chat definitely has no secret features that I'm not telling you about
16:08
Flag as VLQ?
Or idk
what are people flagging as?
@jimsug So it's both then.
I just want to kill it.
But we need 6 reasons to match
I think the fastest way to kill it is to vote offensive... the custom one won't do much other than fill J.R.'s inbox.
@jimsug Rude or abusive.
six vlq's should still kill it.
16:10
10-4.
Would you drop that? Rude gives an auto -1, which means I'll downvote it twice.
Even mods can't downvote twice.
Wait... Rude lets you downvote twice? I just noticed that but I wasn't sure if someone else downvoted or if both were mine.
let's see what name they come up with next...
Interesting... I have only one flag option.
We should borrow this from Wikipedia:
16:13
@DamkerngT. It's 'cause it's deleted. Refresh.
True vandals (as distinguished from users who engage in harassment and edit warring or dabble in minor vandalism) usually suffer from chronic alienation and real or perceived powerlessness and seek recognition and infamy by interrupting and frustrating the Wikipedia project and community. Such users experience exceptional attention as empowerment, reward, and encouragement. This is particularly true for those prolific vandals who have been immortalized on Wikipedia pages, meticulously catalogued by category pages, targeted by dedicated templates, and thereby become a notable part of wiki culture...
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Got it!
Do you get delete votes back if the post gets deleted? Because if we only have a few delete votes, and he keeps posting, we may have some issues eventually.
@Catija We reset in eight hours.
And then... it begins again.
But yeah, it might be an issue.
@Catija I think it is probably so. I still have 23 flags left. I remember that I flagged more than that.
16:17
I guess as long as they're really downvoted and closed, the deletes can wait...
@DamkerngT. I think I only get 12 delete votes.
@DamkerngT. Somehow that user got missed; fixed.
I think the flag party might be over for now :)
@jimsug Which is a good thing! :)
user116848
So is it necessary to downvote those questions or spam flags are enough?
user116848
Oh it is over.
user116848
16:23
I got 7 flags left.
@Arrowfar Flag as abusive, not spam.
One sec.
Yes. And since I can't VTD, I'm left staring at them.
user116848
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Okay. I thought 'spam' would be enough.
16:24
@Arrowfar It's not the right reason. But if everyone flagged as spam, it would be enough.
user116848
Yeah.
@Catija nuked.
Hey how do you make the bot delete them @Jim?
I ask nicely for it upstairs and a CM deletes it.
Normally it'd be J.R. or one of the other mods doing it.
But as they're not available at the moment...
Well, at least, J.R. hadn't responded to a ping when this all started.
Thanks, @inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M — Prashant 52 secs ago
Ahh, finally something good today.
17:12
I'm now wondering; what could be the troll's connection to the users?
He insulted me, @Cat and @Nathan till now.
We have nothing in common; except that we edit or review stuff a lot.
And we're all election candidates.
Could it be related to the election?
Then again, why would one want to destroy the reputation of three election candidates?
People do this a lot in real life elections.
Sometimes people really do that kind of stuff, but this may be just coincidental.
Could it be one of the candidates? Hardly, since the only thing I see in that list are respectable ELLers.
Then who is it? Could it be an ELLer that has been pissed off by all of us?
I wonder who's next.
I don't know. I wonder that too.
I/we thought it'd be Stoney or J.R. who'd be next.
But then it turned out to be against Nathan.
Ah, the water is ready! -- I'll make my tea.
17:17
I wonder how it will change the votes for me/@Cat/@Nathan.
@DamkerngT. Tea! Drink some on my behalf!
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I don't think it will influence the votes significantly - everyone with enough rep and interested in participating should be able to make an informed decision and not be fooled by some prankster.
Well the voters are mainly people I have never known.
I don't have much hope anyway.
J.R. will make it for sure.
There's also a good chance for Wendi.
17:35
Where’s Wanda?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

2 hours later…

Protection request:

A: Totes my goats! What the heck does this mean?

GuestIt was an awkward moment where the character was trying to play cool. Totes of course is slang for totally however the rest of it is just him stumbling over words not sure what to say. Not everything has meaning

Like many poor questions, it is accumulating poor answers but at a rate too slow to trigger auto-protect.
19:23
Well J.R. protected it.
Good man, him.
Indeed. He deserves a big victory in the election.
I didn't flag it for that because normally a request in the site's chat room is all it takes. It isn't really a priority issue to clutter up his bin.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Pretty sure that view is unanimously held. I just did not know whether he would run after all the work he has done. He might have been tired.
I think I can congratulate him from now.
I don't have much hope for myself though.
Well I'm an amateur when it gets to these stuff.
19:49
In fact, I really don't mind if I don't win. I'd like two things to happen.
First, I'd like not to see one user, who's already a candidate, become a mod.
He clearly lacks what it takes to be a mod.
Second, I'd like mods not to neglect chatrooms.
I have seen how great it is when you have your site's mod in the chatroom.
\o @San
You missed sooooome drama.
lol
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M where?
On ELL.
Well, all of the questions are now deleted.
Read some of the transcript above. It's not too high.
20:02
Hi
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Was actually looking for a non-English Language room when I stumbled along the other protected one
Well there's one at [chemisty.se]
And pretty much all of Japanese.SE chatrooms. Or German.SE.
Yeah saw those, unfortunately the Polish community that I'm searching isn't popping up :/
I start to believe my feeling that stack can fix anything might run short on this one
There aren't any Polish.SEs that I'm aware of.
But I have a Polish friend in The Periodic Table.
20:14
Tried any search I could think of, nothing
Looking for some advice on cool general reading websites for 9 or 10 year old kids
General reading?
Should they be in English?
Safe enough to leave them to it, since I know 0% Polish I can't check what it is they look at so Wiki and such is out
No, Polish
The child doesn't know any English (or Dutch as the case may be), which is the major problem
I have someone at The Periodic Table who's Polish. Come and visit!
@Asmyldof And they wanna learn it?
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M i am typing an email. Could you be able to have a review on it?
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Be right over
20:18
@JudeNiroshan I'm available.
"You can confirm this by doing (some task)..." is there another way which i can say that i am 200% sure that the thing what my reader wants to check, i can gurantee ?
You can guarantee that it is what?
Some work which my client wants
I still don't get what you wanna say.
Ok..i think i have messed it up. I will tell you from the starting point
20:23
Ahh, the XY problem strikes again, probably.
My client reported that his web site is down. I have fixed the issue and now i am writing to him
I want to say that, i am 200% sure(i have good confidence) that issue is no more there. You can confirm this by yourself.
So, looking for some good english
How about
> I am fully certain that the latest fixes I've pushed have solved the issue. You may confirm this by visiting blahblahblah.
?
Then, as all devs would, add a sentence saying
> Let me know if the issue still exists.
I would be greateful if you could replace these this phase >"I am fully certain that the ..."
20:27
> I’m pretty sure the latest fixes I’ve pushed have resolved the issue.
How's that for service? :)
And avoid "confirm"
@tchrist appreciate your suggesion
@JudeNiroshan Why?
> See http://blahblahblah if you’d like.
That's the sentence structure they use.
Except the "resolve" thing.
Ok. I'll go with "i am pretty sure that ..."
20:33
I mean, @tch's suggestion works.
@JudeNiroshan "certain" is better in more formal contexts.
I can certainly say that .... ?
Hi
"From what I can detect here, the problem seems to be fully resolved. Please check blahblah and confirm that it is working for you as well." No need to brag about how sure you are, and this reaffirms your respect for the importance of their experience using the website.
@JudeNiroshan I am fully certain that the issue you reported has been resolved.
Or that.
Don't worry @Jude, I've seen other native English devs use this phrasing.
20:40
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M great... thanks a lot !!!
@Phil Hullo! Welcome to ELL's Cabin!
Sorry, I'm on mobile now, so less typing speed.
I've been on and off this site for a while and just got 1k. I like to be helpful and have suggested edits in the past. Now I would like some guidance. When I edit a post will it no longer to in the review queue? Also I would like to help with the review queue but I don't feel like I can make good decisions yet. Is there a way to view old decisions to learn about the culture of reviewing?
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Hi, thanks for the welcome! No worries.
The suggestions that include some version of "I know I am right" are fine if the issue is fully resolved, but if it turns out there still is some problem, it comes across poorly - like you were being dismissive of their observations.
@Adam I suggested he phrase "if the issue persists, do blahblahblah".
@Phil Aww, I can't write a good answer on mobile. :(
Mind if I answer that tomorrow morning? (In 8 hours)
No, your edits won't appear in the queue, and things that were considered pretty minor are no more.
Ok! I would appreciate that.
20:47
K Cabin, /me zzz.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M "If the issue persists...." Good wording - didn't scroll back far enough to see that.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M zzz well.
Going through the server log i found the root cause.
I feel it is not a proper start for a sentence
Can anyone reareange this?
21:15
I've sent a lot of emails like this: "I have inspected the server logs and found ..." Since people often don't read emails well I like to put emphasis that I took action and that I am reporting on the result of that action.
Thank you
